UPS has a trademark on Brown, some other company has Orange... this stuff happens all the time. It`s usually the VERY specific shade of the color. Example: Levi`s has Pantone 201C (Levi`s red).

I don`t mean to be a buzzkill or nothin`, but a trademark doesn`t mean a corporation OWNS anything, it just says that the corporation USES something as a logo. A copyright or registered mark implies ownership; a trademark does not.

It`s like the Whiffle Ball Company and their trademark of the color yellow.

Whiffle Ball Inc. Trademarks Yellow Color

Cadburys also have purple trademarked. The trademarks only apply within that industry.

I can understand why it`s possible - a colour can be an important part of a company`s brand - but still the concept of "owning" part of the visible spectrum just seems ridiculous to me. Especially something as vague as "purple". How big a section of the RGB colour space does that cover? If I owned white (#FFFFFF), is #FFFFFE up for grabs?

They trademarked the color purple in their field only. Another company, completely unrelated to 3M, can use the color purple as their color. UPS has their brown trademarked, too. IBM probably has their color blue trademarked.
