I never really thought about it before, but it must really suck to be the people on the inside of those train cars. At least the people on the outside get fresh air with a bonus of a breeze.

"this pic must be about 5-10 years old as someone else has pointed out this is a commuter train as a lot of the city trains now use overhead electric cables so traveling on the roof is no longer possible unless you want to die "

Plenty of Modern city trains don`t use cables on the roofs.

But even if they did, who`s to say that this is a new train line? The train and tracks could be 40 years old and the picture just been taken yesterday. They don`t completely renovate the rail system every 3 years. That would be too god awfully expensive!

I love flame wars.
But what I`d really like to point out is that wherever this picture was taken, its pretty representative of how trains have been working in places like this for the last twenty years. And not that many people die. I`m sure many incidents go undocumented, but still. If we did this in America, thousands would be killed every year. AND the people who died or got hurt would sue the railroad company and put the railroad company out of business.

And not that this is either here or there, but I remember hearing on a documentary once that often times these trains are empty inside, and the people simply choose to ride outside to avoid the fares.

@iCyborg, Male, 18-29, Asia: Uhh, no.

This is NOT a village. This is a regular scene in the more densely packed areas of Mumbai. And what else can you expect in a city which has more people than entire countries, 50% or more of whom live under the poverty line. Seriously, India, for all your boasts of being an emerging superpower, sort out your infrastructure.

@crazycatz - "They seriously need to consider a new form of birth control..."

Actually India`s population growth is in decline for over a decade now, it will take another 30 years before the number stabalizes at 1.4B I think.

"They seriously need to consider a new form of transportation---"

Metro is there in only 4 major cities of India, and should be launched in 4 more in next couple of years. But ya, these kind of pics will keep on coming for next couple of decades as it is from some village, I think they are coming/leaving for some religious event, though these are some of the rarest moments hence the pic, otherwise over 10 Million ppl daily commute in local trains in mumbai/delhi and over 10 Million travel daily for longer distances.

the differance between 1st and 3rd world... law suits.

we could do this except for the liabilities.

Perhaps if we casually accepted more casualties our public transport could be this efficient! :D

Not that I`d ride it.
