Angilion: Only those that owned land could be considered `citizens` in ancient Rome. I swear you seem to have a need to be a contrarian.
And I swear you seem to have a need to be wrong.

Land ownership was required for entry to be an eques or a senator (roughly like a knight and higher nobility in later times), but it was not required for citizenship.

Besides, my point about Rome was the assumption of equality between citizens, which was at least as true as it is in the USA today, probably more so. Anyone who claims that everyone in the USA is considered to be created equal is deluded or lying.

My main point, though, was that by your ad hoc redefinition of `democracy`, democracy does not exist and never has.
Also, I clearly mentioned Democracy as we know it as in `All men are created equal`, And that certainly did NOT ever exist in Greece or Rome.
By that definition, democracy as we know it does not exist anywhere and has never existed anywhere...and ancient republican Rome could still make a fair claim at it as they regarded all Roman citizens as equals. In that respect, they could be considered closer to it than the USA today.

As I`m English, I thought I`d throw my ha`porth in.

Davymid is right. `bint` is quite mildly insulting. It`s also very uncommon. The only time I`ve heard it used is in Monty Python`s Quest for the Holy Grail.

Let me finish that sentence for you.

If she gets elected president she`ll have had more executive experience than her predecessor had before he was elected, Be the first woman president, Be a better leader than we`ve had in over two decades, And We might actually have the chance to turn our economy around for the better.

Even the college age Freedom Riders touring the South in the `60s and facing real violence and terror while doing so were labeled communists by a fearful people. This is a very old tactic, and it has never been true.

Crakr, if you know anything at all about the history of resistance to change in this country you would be familiar with a group known as the John Birch Society. This group was (and still is) convinced that commies had control of the government in the `50s, and everyone was a communist, I mean *everyone*. Conservative scion *Dwight Eisenhower* was a commie, his brother was a commie, Ike filled his cabinet with commies to start a secret Red coup. These people were (and are) absolutely convinced that there are commies everywhere, under your bed, in your closet and in your pockets. This however was (and continues to be) nothing more than a figment of their tortured imaginations.

I don`t like Crakr as much as the next guy, but Zira: shut up bitch. You are the reason that liberals get a bad name. Using anti-conservatist stereotypes to prove anybody wrong, as well as making assumptions to make yourself sound better. JUST CUZ YOU`RE LIBERAL DOES NOT MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON THAN ANYONE, just cuz you say something is true doesn`t mean the universe shifts to make it so.

The way in which you moderate these comment sections is completely ridiculous and arbitrary. More often than not, the "offending comments" are funnier or more interesting than the actual content on your website. I will not be browsing your website anymore as everything that is posted I can see a week earlier on, the daily what, 4chan, or stumbleupon. I can no longer tolerate listening to your moderators incredibly stupid justification for censoring free speech on the internet. I know it seems like a huge leap and why would I defend somebody who say cats suck, well because who cares? who gives a rats ass if somebody wants to post the same comment on every post? At least you have a community that is trying to be involved. I was banned a while back for ripping on crackrjak because I think his comments are ridiculous, but I still think he should be able to say what ever stupid thing enters his feeble mind without being censored. mods don`t respond to this jus

I remember all the "Chelsea Clinton is ugly!" jokes and found them vulgar and inappropriate too. It`s just not nice to attack a person`s children, right or left wing.

PMarren got the ban? oh well, his ranting was kinda funny, in a predictable sort of way.

And there`s a difference between stating an opinion and trolling. Making a throwaway comment and stating your opinion is one thing, trolling is repeated and sustained over a period over a period of time. Triderk throws in a "Lib=arrogant" line on almost every single one of his posts that I`ve seen. If I threw in a "Conservatives=Dickheads" on every one of my posts, I`d be trolling too.

You`ll be interested to know that pmarren was permabanned earlier this week by fancylad for trolling with his "cats=suck" on every goddam post.

Like I said in MY submission about Fox News anchors badmouthing Palin. Just because you`re conservative doesn`t mean you have to support people that have no business in politics. Sarah Palin is a great campaigner- not so much of a politician. Similarly, I wouldn`t expect every liberal to support nutjob liberals. (although admittedly I consider myself a Liberaltarian.)

You don`t have to support Christine O`Donnell, or Sarah Palin- these people have poor politics. There are hundreds of people that legitimately understand how the conservative principals work economically & socially and how to utilize these principals through good governance.

I fundamentally disagree with these people on many levels, but i also agree with them on many levels- I am neither democrat NOR republican- which is why people with no place in politics, BEING in politics bugs me.

It SHOULD bug you too. But whatever-

Also- this notion of: "Turning the tables," is childish. The only scenario that the whole "eye for an eye" concept can be justified is during grievous physical disputes.

Anywhere else and you mind as well just have said: "He started it."

This notion of: the "mainstream media made fun of me, so i`ll make fun of other people" is also silly. Because A.) there is no mainstream media, B.) there are almost no neutral parties reporting politics anymore, so DEAL WITH IT, and C.) that`s something than a 9 year old would do.

If you have a problem with me? Cool. Have a problem with ME. If you have a problem with my ideologies, cool- have a problem with them. But don`t dislike ME because of my ideologies. I still like what 5 Cat posts, or CarkrJak. Not so much OldOllie because ALL that he posts is lame right-wing group-think. At least most of the conservatives on this website have an individual thought process.

And the Roman Empire was preceded by the Roman Republic, making democracy in Rome over 2,000 years old. Which was the crux of Angilion`s point, really - your assertion that Rome did not have democracy, because it was ruled by Caesars, was false.

Although the entire point about Rome is moot anyway - your assertion that democracy started in America is equally disproven by the even older Athenian democratic system.

I was called an idiot for saying that i would rather have public healthcare than public fire departments. I certainly don`t want privatized fire, or privatized police- but if I had the choice I would rather have them privatized than the system of healthcare we have today.

But I`m an idiot. I was called a "libtard," a fag, and all types of other words for expressing my beliefs. And you know what?

I didn`t take it like a whining little girl.

I never attack someone for their political beliefs- I either attack them for being a dick, or I attack their political beliefs, but not them for their beliefs.

The arizona law? Was racist.
The Iraq war? Unpatriotic.
DADT? Shameful, bigoted and hateful.
Death Panels? Lies and slander.
Cap and Trade? Pointless, and mostly theatrical politics.

Some of these are for lefty`s and some of these are for righties. If you take it personal- that`s your problem.

Just a few years ago I was considered unpatriotic because I didn`t support a war in Iraq, when there was no substantial evidence BESIDES alleged weapons of mass destruction. Any lawyer will tell you that you cannot prosecute on a single piece of largely circumstantial evidence... let alone send thousands of American men and women to there deaths, and dooms tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens to theirs.

Oh yeah- it was also the single biggest deficit sinkhole in the last 10 years.

Angilion: Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus (23 September 63 BC – 19 August AD 14) is considered the first emperor of the Roman Empire, which he ruled alone from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. From Wiki Yes, Rome had a senate made of rich land owners, But they still worshiped Caesar and his image was stamped on their coins.

Now what was that about Rome not having a monarch 2000 years ago ?

In any case, I clearly said that democracy originated in Athens, not Rome. Even the words "politics" and "democracy" are Greek.

The timing is about the same, though, and some form of democracy started in numerous city-states around the Mediterranean around the same time.
Angilion: Rome was still ruled by a series of `Caesars` 2000 years ago. "Democracy" as we know it (without a monarchy)[..]
The Romans overthrew their monarchy in 509BC, forming a republic run by elected politicians with a huge array of checks and balances to ensure that they would never have another monarch. All male citizens had the vote.

509 BC is more than 20 centuries ago.

Admittedly the very early Roman republic was heavily weighted in favour of the nobility, but representation of the people came very quickly when the commoners took the effective step of refusing to co-operate. Since Rome couldn`t exist without them, the nobility rapidly saw their point and agreed to major reform. 494BC saw the direct representation of the commoners in government through the plebian assemblies and tribunes.

I wonder how many of you read before commenting. I don`t support Sarah Palin. I am a conservative, but I don`t want her to run for President. However, I did enjoy what she had to say. The media should be consistent about how they handle little mistakes. Any one of you should realize it`s not easy speaking in front of a bunch of people. I imagine speaking into a giant microphone while cramped into a tiny room is even more unnerving. People will make mistakes. Yet we judge more harshly on her and other people of the republican party than we do with the democrat party. Also, she`s demanding the media actually RESEARCH before they report. How is that bad?

Being a bit picky here...paper was invented in China in the 1st century and kept so secret that it couldn`t be made anywhere else until the 7th century. The principles of democracy were first written on clay. In Greece too, not Rome. The city-state of Athens, to be precise. The word `democracy` is clearly Greek in origin. Rome copied the idea from Greece and modified it to suit Roman society.

The basic idea is probably older, though.

I don`t understand the need to respond to stuff like this.

Who let`s their feathers get ruffled up, over something so apparently meaningless, to the point where you commision a response piece... on Facebook?

What`s the point of talking a talk, when the only walk you can walk is that of "TV Personality?"

Well...to be an anus.....She didn`t correct herself...
the interviewer corrected her....

But in all honesty, as much as I greatly dislike her, the media should give it a rest. No one is perfectly articulate, whether it be in casual conversation, or in front of a crowd. People mess up.
A slight slip not worth a headline.

As I said, I like Palin. She`s played the cards dealt here and only cheeted a little bit.

But . . .

While under investigation as Governor of Alaska she quit the office which stopped the investigation. One has to wonder what they were about to uncover that would force her out of office.

But she is also beautuiful, very smart and has made herself into a mover/shaker despite the nay-sayers. Gotta admire that kind of gusto.

I agree with Mrpeabody a page back. Who cares about the shallow bullpoo, we should choose based on what they do in office.

Fact: After her time as governor of Alaska, Palin left the state with an incredible personal debt of 70% debt-to-GPD.
Fact: While she was Mayor of Wasilla the deficit went from 1 million to 22 million. And that is a town in Alaska with a rough pop. of 5,000 while she was the Mayor.

When you get in front of a crowd, it`s easy to slip. The media has really jumped on this because I think there`s a really good chance she`ll be the next republican candidate for president. If the republicans hope to have a chance of winning, they better pick someone who is much less polarizing.

I`m a little annoyed at one of the things she mocks about him. When he talks about "principles put on paper more than 20 centuries ago", he`s talking about the creation of democracy, which, believe it or not, did NOT happen in 1776, but 2000 years ago, in Ancient Rome.

That kind of backfired. Although most Americans know nothing about history and think he`s being stupid and unAmerican. -_-

And for an example of MSNBC doing a good journalistic job one need look no further than the DADT controversy. Obama had said he would be a "fierce advocate" for LGBT rights, and his lackluster performance so far did not escape Rachel Maddow who called him a "farce advocate" on one of her broadcasts. We *do* criticize Obama for screwups except the difference is when we criticize him it`s for real stuff and not unicorn hunting like the Right so often likes to do. (example Birtherism)

If she thinks it`s tough now wait until election season. Ask her competitors.

Obama promised to repeal DADT using the senate, so far he has hemmed and hawed and deferred a lot. Then he challenges the court injunction against it, but that`s pro forma for any case, the government is obliged to defend any law currently on the books, so this is not yet finished.

It`s not often I would back her up--as a matter of fact, it`s never happened before. But if you listen to the entirety of what she`s saying, you can tell that it was a simple mistake. An all too common slip of the tongue that anyone could have been guilty of. She clearly didn`t think that North Korea was our ally, and was clearly thinking of South Korea when she said "North Korea."

you are all ridiculous. left or right, it doesnt really matter on a personal level, you are all the same. the left bashes the right, the right bashes the left, and usually never over important issues but over trivial superficial elements.

oh, and both sides have mainstream media backing them. MSNBC sucks on obamas balls while Fox tries to burn him alive. it was the complete opposite when bush was in office.

so if your going to continue arguing, make your arguments over important facts, keep a level and respectful tone, and quit f*cking attacking each other. that is why our whole system sucks; because personal beliefs always break down communication to a screaming match and nothing gets accomplished.

"Who really cares if she can name a magazine during an interview when put on the spot?"

Actually a lot of people do care whether or not a supposed journalism major can name any magazines. Palin`s total inability to do so was one of the first signs that she`s not terribly bright, and that moment helped a lot of Americans decide that Palin was unfit for office.

Actually, the Left doesn`t demand anybody respect Obama, at least not in the same way the Right demanded we respect Bush. Back in the day (being able to say that feels so good) If we didn`t like what Bush was doing or if we criticized him at all we were UnAmerican, Unpatriotic and quite possibly terrorists.

Besides we don`t move in jackbooted lockstep like the Right does either, some of us are unhappy with Obama`s policies on DADT for just one example, but the difference is the administration feels it can afford to ignore it`s progressive base as it continues to try to out Clinton Clinton. (get your mind outta the gutter, I mean policy wise not, well, you know...)

I find it interesting that most of the bashing is so shallow. "I wonder who wrote that for her." (Questions end with a question mark genius). Who really cares if she can name a magazine during an interview when put on the spot? What really matters is what she (or any candidate does when in office). For example did anyone read this?

I would put more stock in the actual actions of a candidate than the media representation or the need of the "other" to make a person look stupid. In this day and age, the media is like statistics, it can be used to prove anything.

1) Popeater is not "the MSM".
2) She doesn`t have more credibility than the popeater source.
3) All the things she claimed weren`t covered by "the MSM", were covered by "the MSM".
4) The Obama gaffes were mocked endlessly by the "non-MSM".
5) She doesn`t disapprove when it`s "her side".
6) She propagates it.
7) She`s (therefore) a hypocrite.
8) My first post is another demonstration of her practicing the same slander (calling someone on something while you`re doing far worse).

Let me know if you need bullet points for the bullet points.

Referring to Obama`s use of a teleprompter which we all know is terrible... because... I forget but they wink alot while saying it so it must be REALLY bad, and other Presidents probably don`t use them.

Anyway, long story short, this is Sarah giving that speech criticizing Obama for using a teleprompter.

I truly hope she wins the primaries. As part of my predictions for the November elections: Sarah will win primaries (then lose the presidential) unless Republicans start tearing her apart now.
