Us non-Russians take our self-preservation instinct for granted. Russians have to rely on very strict external forces to keep them from dying in ridiculous accidents. Unfortunately, being that they are in Russia, those external forces are largely nonexistent.

@bataleon, how is it rational to take unnecessary risks for fun? not to mention the potential for a large gust of wind is much greater on a tower 900 ft in the air, and your brain doesn`t get the warning from the audio/visual clues from trees.

"The reason I have no fear of heights is because I am very rational and I just think that I am no more likely to fall over here than I was on the ground..."

Agreed, heights also don`t bother me using the same line of thought.

@KingKrusha, I understand the reason why people die. I don`t understand why they are scared of falling in the first place. Vertigo is a fear I cannot comprehend as I do not suffer with it and it seems completely stupid.

My father has vertigo, I know many other people who do. I still do not quite understand it...

"Bataleon, your statement is of course logical, but your inability to picture it from someone else`s perspective is infantile. At that height, staring down and seeing your own death in a mere slip makes the feeling of vertigo very difficult to ignore. People feel like they`re falling when they`r standing perfectly still. The risk factor is what makes people so afraid, which makes the experience woozy and terrifying. Don`t try to clever."

Infantile? That`s a bit strong. It`s the vertigo that I don`t understand. As a climber, I have no fear of heights and I am often in situations where I am looking down at great heights, so it has never bothered me.

It`s not my inability to view it from other peoples perspectives, it`s my incomprehension at how people cannot rationalise a situation like this.

The reason I have no fear of heights is because I am very rational and I just think that I am no more likely to fall over here than I was on the ground...

I have no fear of heights. my problem is more to do with widths.
i can hang off a thousand foot high cliff on a mountain and be fine. i get vertigo on my own roof.

@bataleon27 you could not be more wrong. it is the fear of heights that makes you more likely to feel nervous, ergo losing your balance and dying. people who suffer from vertigo often lose their balance when looking down at a 900ft drop

I always found peoples fear of heights a bit ridiculous. You are no more likely to fall off a 900ft tower than you are to fall over when walking along a path. The only difference is one would cause death....

@slothofdoom
true, however you are forgetting the major problems of
1. wind. wind grows stronger at higher altitudes.
2. disorientation due to the lower horizon.
3. They are Russian teenagers, and therefore drunk.

Ok, stand up at your computer and don;t move. See how you don;t instantly fall over? (er...I hope)

Amazing isn`t it? All of that floor around you isn`t making a difference.

I just don`t see why people get excited when others walk on tall things.

"At 900 feet it would take you approximately 7.48 seconds to hit the ground. That`s a long time to contemplate your idiocy..."

Heres one for you then. The world record for longest distance fallen and survived (without a parachute ofc) is 33,000ft. That would take just over 3 minutes...

What do you think about in that 3 minutes? I mean, you`re out cold for 1 thanks to oxygen starvation, then say 20 seconds of blind panic before chilling out leaving over a minute and a half of freefall time to use before hitting the ground...

some kid at my school got stuck in a tree the other day and they actually called the principal to come get him down. i guess the chances of a broken leg vs. public humiliation just doesnt weigh out the same in kids minds anymore.
