The press morally shouldn`t `out` someone... for some stars it does wreck their careers, There are still a surprising amount of people out there who are 100% anti gay... and wont ever buy `said persons` music/movies/whatever after they know `saidperson` is gay,

Sad but true.... And also majority of what the press say are lies, but people still believe it. I think they have a right to sue over being defamated (sp)...
IMO the press need to give it a break, they stalk people and if it were anyone else they would be arrested and charged... I feel sorry for most celeb`s.. I cant imagine people vid/photographing me every second im in public... I`d personally go nuts and start shooting people im surprised most of them dont.

It is absolutely Travolta`s right to stay in the closet if he wants to. It`s the same with Jodie Foster. Sure people in the spotlight coming out can help younger people. But they have also the right to their privacy. This isn`t about being ashamed of who you are, it`s about actors wanting to keep their career professional. The media crossed the line way long ago about what was appropriate boundaries for these people. It`s stalking. It needs to stop!

I think it you`re in the closet, you are harming yourself by not being true to who you are.

However, it`s up to the individual to decide if they should come out or not, not some crappy gossip website.

Besides, does anyone really care any more these days?

He didn`t sue South Park because he knows that they make fun of everyone and that it`s in fairly good humor. Gawker is pure sh*t.

Any man truly comfortable with his sexuality wouldn`t be upset by this.

How come he didn`t sue South Park? They did that years ago. I guess for all I know he did.

the question is then, would being gay hurt his reputation? if so, he`s well within his rights to sue, otherwise he`ll find it tough to get anything out of it.

Why is it such a slam to be accused of being gay?

It really all depends on how they phrase the story. They`d probably phrase it as "sources close to Travolta say he`s gay," or "Travolta was seen with an unidentified man that some think might be his lover." Neither of those statements are necessarily untrue, but lead people to suspect that Travolta is gay. Not libel, but a pretty foul way to make a living if you ask me.

As far as I`m concerned, gossip columnists can all go die in a fire.

"You have the right to say anything that doesn`t put somebody in danger. I don`t care if your reputation is destroyed by lies."

This is simply not true. You might not care about who your lies hurt, but the fact is libel is not protected free speech. You can be sued for harming someone`s reputation with lies. And that`s the way it should be. Click here for more info.

@pandas actually libel is falsely accusing him is libel/slander

if he actually is and they have proof, then there`s nothing that`s illegal

immoral maybe but not illegal

Libel is merely the favorite word used to attack free speech. You have the right to say anything that doesn`t put somebody in danger. I don`t care if your reputation is destroyed by lies.

Libel = false statements/accusations that defame a person in print
Slander = same as above EXCEPT it`s just by the spoken word and not print.

Uh they don`t have the right to do that. That`s called libel... it IS libel (currently, because if he is gay, he hasn`t come out yet, so therefore accusations of him being gay without coming from Travolta himself is libel). And he can sue them because he, himself, says that it wasn`t true.

Oh US Government AP... the only time you`ll do me any good...

He can make good movies become awesome movies. That`s all that matters.

John Travolta, man...what the drat happened?

The gay, in the closet thing, we all came to terms with that along with your drated up Scientology. But that bad, bad, lace-front hooker wig; those hyper-polished faint yellow teeth; that over-foundationed skin...

When did you become Jack Nicholson?

And he was good in many movies I saw. And he has an airport at his house. How f*cking cool is that sh*t? "Hey, lets go take my jetliner for a spin. I`ve got it parked out back."

OK!

"Is calling someone gay in print when they`re not slander?"

No, its libel, IF false.

Libel is generally a false statement published to third parties that has the effect of defaming.

I`d need more facts to decide. This is a question entirely unsupported by context.

And dressing in drag while making a million dollars is called a brilliant use of your time.

John Travolta is a classic. I like that he finds a way to dance in every one of his movies. On the other hand, the scientology thing is weird. I laughed so hard at the end of Battlefield Earth thinking that the same guy that wrote the whole scientology religion was the author of that piece of crap movie.

There is no way He`s Gay!

Okay, so he tongued Kirk Douglas, that doesn`t mean he`s gay. Who wouldn`t, right?

and so what if he`s been known to wear drag. Lots of straight men do.

OBVIOUSLY he is not gay.

I hope I`ve put those silly rumors to rest.

"correct me if I`m wrong, but doesn`t defamation have to be demeaning in the first place..."

And having false accusations being thrown around about your sexual orientation isn`t demeaning?

It might lead to a situation akin to parents who never acknowledge that their son (whom has come out of the closet to them) is gay, and refuse to accept it.

No, defamation has to be something said to the public as if it were factual which would lower that persons opinion to ordinary people. It has to be from party B about party A to the public. If Party B says something to party A and party A passes it on thats not slander/libel.

Depending on what ordinary people are in this case it could be libel.

Yes publicizing false accusations about a person that would ruin their reputation (Defamation), especially if they are celebrities or politicians, is considered to be illegal and they have the right to sue their accusers. Besides that, he is a very attractive man.

In addition, Donald Trump attempted to sue a news reporter for publishing his net worth to be between a certain value, which trump stated he was worth much more than what was publicized.

on the other hand, celebs know their whole lives are on display. if they don`t like it, get out of show business.
