PCs Vs. Macs... If They Were Cars [Pic]

Those of you with Macs will attest to this sad, sad fact...

Macs look nicer but I think they both perform the same. Reguardless I like PCs more. And what`s wrong with the car on the left? I`d much rather drive that.

I guess, comparing an apple to a lambo is a bit off though considering macs are usually a good bit behind in tech compared to pc`s.. But I guess its more of a price comparison then a performance comparison so its mostly valid.

I love this... Where do you get your stats? other than forum `acer is poo` chit-chat? I bought an acer laptop in uni (6 years ago) and it`s still running 24/7 today as my linux server. I bought an acer netbook last year, no issues. But yes, acer is poo

Apple uses (almost exclusively) Foxconn in China. This company recently came under heat due to the large suicide rate at it`s factory (some related directly to apple). It costs apple piss-all to make their products in relation to what they sell them to you for.

Product cost is a completely valid argument... If it is not a factor in everything else you purchase in life, then you either have to much money, or are an idiot.

Example. I need a PC for surfing the internet and checking e-mail. I can buy a used computer capable of these things for $50, or a used mac mini for $200 (1.4 GHz) all prices just pulled from my local craigslist and the cheapest.

What reason can you honestly justify

@watbid We always told the same story about having Daniel Boone`s ax. I`ve also use that story to describe old Frank (short for Frankenstein, which really doesn`t quite make sense, since Frankenstein was the doctor, and my PC is more analogous to the monster, who never really had a name, which is more the pity, but that`s another story).

I will say this: Buying really cheap name brand pc`s aren`t always the best of Ideas. Specifically, Acers suck. They may be better now, but they`re notorious for hardware issues, bad support, bad build quality and low quality parts (display, keyboard, etc.).

This can be attributed to shoddy workmanship when constructing, and shoddy workmanship when designing the cooling system and the chassis. And being cheap.

On the other hand, Acer is now the worlds second largest PC maker. So yeah.

@Altaru

If I were an idiot and that is what was causing the issues in my PCs then surely my idiocy would break the Macs aswell?

I have no idea why you felt the need to insult my intelligence. At no point did I say that you couldn`t keep using your PC, or that my choice was better/more correct than your choice.

Mac`s work better -FOR ME-. Yes, a PC has more options and more parts for customization but that is not what I want out of a computer. I get no enjoyment out of that.

If that is what -YOU- want out of a computer then that`s great. Build and customise your PC to your hearts desires and have a bloody good time doing it. Just don`t call me an idiot for having my own, perfectly valid, opinion.

Thanks.

You could get a PC with BETTER specs than your own Mac for the same price NOW. Just sayin`.
I have had several Macs and many, many PCs in my life. Every single PC, without fail, has needed to be repaired several times and have parts replaced during it`s lifetime, vastly increasing the "maintenance" cost of the machine.
The fact is, the ONLY reason parts in a PC break down is because YOU`RE AN IDIOT.

My family has used PC`s all our lives, and the ONLY time we`ve had any "hardware failure" was when lightning struck our house and it burned out a fair amount of our tech. The only reason THAT happened was because we weren`t using surge protectors.

Not only that, but there`s such a greater variety of parts you can use in a PC to make it YOURS, as opposed to a Mac which is basically just on loan to you fr

I think PC is better than a Mac. Why? I`ve had a PC for over 8 years without ANY problems whatsoever but when I got a Mac, it broke within the first 2 months. Also, the ONLY advantage the Mac had over the PC was that it could run 1080p vids at the cost of the Google homepage taking 20 seconds to load.

But that is if you assume that they break down at the same rate.

I have had several Macs and many, many PCs in my life. Every single PC, without fail, has needed to be repaired several times and have parts replaced during it`s lifetime, vastly increasing the "maintenance" cost of the machine.

None of my macs have ever needed to be repaired or replaced, and the only time I buy a new one is when I want to upgrade. Now that I have a Mac Pro I can upgrade individual parts anyway so the point is irrelevant.

Your results may vary, obviously, but that has been my experience.

Also, I resent it being implied that I know nothing about computers/technology because I prefer Macs. You`d be surprised to hear that I actually do know a thing or two about computers. The difference is that my computer is a tool to me, not a hobby.

The PC/Mac argument is funny, because the only REAL difference between a mac and a PC is the software. You buy a mac, and you are really buying a PC with Mac OS with an INTEL CPU - the SAME ones that are in a PC.

When you buy a mac, you are buying access to Mac-specific hardware and software. You are being limited to a specific set of hardware that Apple wants to support. You are buying a computing experience which is a bit simpler than a PC.

Mac software IS good, or Apple wouldn`t be so successful, and there ARE great reasons for using a Mac. Claiming that a Mac is better for editing media is WRONG. It all depends on the software you choose to use; the best editing software is ALMOST universally available on Windows AND Mac OS.

It all depends on taste. I personally like PC, because I like to play games. I can`t get a fast enough video card to play the games that I want to play, the way that I want to play them, because I can`t get a fast enough video card t

Friends don`t let friends game on Mac.

All hardware can fail so the more reliable BS they say regarding hardware is dead wrong. The difference is if something does die on a PC you can replace that one item not the whole setup. Besides that you can pay much less for a PC than a Mac with the same setup.

hahahah, your technical analysis of "Everything else works better on the Mac" is so convincing... Being a `hardcore nerd`, you really should have been able to come up with a reason as to how things work better on a mac. Apps run the same on the different platforms, and if you have comparable hardware there is no performance difference. Anything you notice is that nonsense apple has put in your head that things just work so much better on a mac.

walk into most data-centers in the world and you`ll not find one apple product (other than a techs ipod maybe). The reason? Apple products are technically impotent and cost prohibitive. period.

Industry will probably never adopt apple until steve jobs stops smoking crack. Their blade servers are designed like their consumer grade products... Real pretty, lack features, not very customizable. Yeah, apple is so awesome...

Apple is for people that need to talk about how awesome their apple poo

If we were to assume that a mac and pc breaks down at the same rate (relatively speaking this is true) then that mean you`ll be spending significantly more every time your mac breaks down versus your pc. The fact you can replace parts in your pc versus needing to replace the entire machine is the point.

Although people will buy them, it`s not always because it`s a designer item. Apple plays to people that know little to nothing about computers/technology, throws a little razzle-dazzle at them, making the consumer believe that they are the superior machine... Which, when you compare specs, features, and price, they most definitely are not.

As an example i was recently helping a neighbor with his laptop, and he mentioned that he should get a mac. When i asked why, he said `because i take a lot of photos, macs are better for that`. While my neighbor is a nice guy he`s completely inept when it comes to technology and would believe whatever you told him.

Apple is good at marketing, industrial design, playing on peoples stupidity, and catering to the market that needs an expensive computer for appearance`s sake.

They can charge those prices cause people will buy them. The same reason people will buy designer jeans over an equivalent non-designer pair. There`s no difference except the label but people will always make up their own reasons to justify their choice. :-)

What does a PC cost in Europe? What you do with your ($850 USD 3 years ago) mac can be done with a $250 (todays $) netbook.

My PC`s never crash either (barring a complete hardware failure), yet other people`s do. Same things happen with mac, that`s why they have a support site a phone line because they all don`t `just work` like they love to claim.

If apple`s product prices where in line with the rest of the industry (or lower considering some have had serious design flaws), they would be fine. But they`re over-priced, and not nearly as capable as a comparable PC.

So what you get for the extra money is strictly a sense of smug that you own an expensive piece of eye candy, and get to be part of the douche mac culture.

Meh, I`d prefer a `68 Camaro ss. Or an Aston V8 vantage (new or old one, doesn`t matter). `70 Dodge Charger. 911 Gt2 RS. `68 911 Targa. Mercedes 230 SL (pagoda). Maserati Gran Turismo. The list goes on. Seriously, the list goes on and on and on and on. All depending on how much money I make at any given moment.

Hell, if I wanted a mustang, I`d rather have a normal `65 convertible, than the beefed up version shown (can`t quite place it, but I don`t know mustangs all that well).

And if I wanted a Gallardo, the GT3 racing version is not what I`d buy. I`d go for a Balboni, or something.

I haven`t bought a new computer in over 10 years. Of course, there`s nothing left of the original except the case and the power cord. It`s had 4 motherboard and processor upgrades; 4 optical drive upgrades; 2 new power supplies; the RAM`s gone from 256Mb to 4Gb; the HD capacity has gone from 10Gb to 2Tb; plus I`ve added a PCI RAID controller, extra USB and Firewire ports, and I just bought my 3rd monitor.

Try that with a Mac.

What a lame disgussion, as always with the pc/mac thing.

Mac and PC have different qualities, both good and bad. It depends on what you need a computer for and your personal preferences. Some people like to buildt, upgrade, customize etc. and so they need a PC. It`s a lot cheaper, but you can probably fix it yourself. A PC is a little more work, but the price is low.

A Mac will cost a lot more, but it sure lasts longer... if you`re not a computer wiz, but like to play around with computers mac is perfect... i have a PC, and i would like a mac but it`s too expensive, i use the computer to surf the web and write homework so buying a mac for this is not neccesary...

That`s a comparison between a laptop and a desktop. If your laptop dies, regardless of whether it`s a PC or a Mac, you will most probably need to replace the whole mobo assembly. You can replace parts on a Mac Pro, you know.

Just because it`s easy to use, doesn`t mean it`s designed for retards. It means it`s designed WELL unlike someone we know. Oh and don`t give me the crap about Linux > Windows > Mac. Mac is *nix, just has a proper GUI.

NOT TRUE. I have one Mac fanboy friend who will not stfu about my using of a PC. O.M.F.G.

As a longtime Mac user (and I`m not being an idiot fanboy, just stating the facts as they pertain to my situation), I can honestly say the only thing that`s ever gone bad on mine have been 5 hard drives (in 5 years), which go bad on ANY machine, not just Macs, and even then only 2 were boot drives.

Hell, my whole family uses Macs– my folks have 4 different Macs between them, my house has 5, and my in-laws have 3.

Grand total– 2 Mac Pro desktops, 5 iMacs, 2 17" MacBook Pros, and 3 MacBooks, and the only person who`s ever had major hardware problems would be my brother, who steadfastly refuses to buy a Mac, even though he`s been through no less than 7 different comps in the last 3 years.

That said, I`m not a retard, and neither are my parents or in-laws. We back our poo up.

Although, I`d say one drive failure per year out of the 30+ we have running isn`t terrible.

Wrong!!! My father-in-law had to take his MacBook in THREE times to get work done. Hard drive twice, motherboard once. He lost a ton of vacation pictures and other important stuff. He hadn`t backed it up because "Macs don`t break".

Not only did it break, it took about 2 weeks each time to get it back. I can repair my PC the same day it goes down if it needs work.

The only way around this issue, for someone like me, is to buy a prebuilt machine. To get a prebuilt PC of the same spec as this Mac Pro wouldn`t actually be that much cheaper and often has the same issues with replacable parts (I`m looking at you, DELL). The same goes for a prebuilt of the same spec as an iMac, a lot of people don`t include the cost of an equivalent monitor to the one that you get with an iMac.

Also, in regards to having to buy windows? Who doesn`t have a windows install disk sitting about somewhere?

Beyond what I`ve just said above, I just find the OS easier to use; especially for design work. I -can- do what I do on a PC, I just find that OS X fits my work flow a lot better and, hey, I have a hassle free way to have all the functionality of windows too, should I ever need it!

To each his own, eh?

I`m not in any way challenging anyones choice of computer hardware/OS, just to get that out of the way. I prefer mac, you don`t. That`s fine.

I will certainly agree that I could get an equally powerful PC for much less than I paid for my Mac. But I would have to select it`s components and assemble it/have it assembled. Custom PC`s ALWAYS have some problems, it`s just one of the drawbacks of having so many variables in the hardware. This is fine for some, but not for me. I just want it to work, invibily and without my input, so that I can just get on with some work/play some games.

Yeah, that`s probably about right, but for the metaphor to be spot on, you`d have to press an "allow" button every time you stepped on the gas or shifted gears; your clock would eat up all the electricity your alternator put out; and the longer you drive, the slower the car would go until you restarted it.

Oh, and if you miss the way a mac runs, just dual-boot a Mac like Linux Distro, and you`ll have more customization and less expenses when your mac does break.

Mac is good to but what make the real difference is the price and tha fact that Aplle have a real stupid politic. If you buy Apple you can`t change anything ,you buy a sealed box. Just think to iPhone, when battery lose the charge power you are screwed. There is no way to replace it. For the money i spend for Apple products i pretend to have a stuff that don`t die in my hand and no possibility to repair. Most of Mac computers are integrated in the monitor, if your monitor expire...adios Mac. So if PC and Mac nowaday are becoming the same there is no more reason to spend a lot more for Apple when i can have the same at half price with a PC. I repeat Apple today is just fashion and trend for people that want waste money.

This is fairly accurate, but you have to factor in that I`ve never had any of my Macs stop working. I switched from PC to Mac simply because I can`t afford to have my work computer just arbitrarily refuse to boot up at random and need reformatting. Also, I`m a sucker for design and I find the UI more comfortable to use.

But, of course, this is a Mac vs PC discussion on the internet; I can`t actually use real world logic here! ;)

@ultimakewl

I have a Mac Pro which, as I mentioned, I use for work.

Because I can`t afford a separate gaming rig on top of my work machine; my Mac Pro has Windows installed on it via Boot Camp. It can run any game that I want it to. The whole "Macs can`t play games" thing hasn`t been true for a LONG time.

I`ll take the PC car, reliable, plenty fast for what I need, easy to fix, and classic beauty.

Substantial difference between Mac and PC is that i can put a Mac in my PC but i cant put a PC in a stupid Mac. Mac is just design, for stupid people that want to waste money.

Frajola, thats because more than one company makes PCs. If Apple allowed other companies to make Mac base machines they would all look different too.

I think they could`ve chosen a better looking car for the mac, cause even though I`m a PC, the Mac design at least has some style to it. All PCs look different!

Truth be told, I`d love a ride in the "Mac", but I`d rather own the "PC."
