You can actually see the light being refracted by the heat on better quality film or in person, like a shimmering mirage on a hot day...

Got warned about this when we used to do first aid at speedway. Not at all pleasant.

well not necessarily odd. alot of hydrocarbons (ie fuel) emit very little light when they burn...

and hydrogen emits no visible light at all... guess that`s what`s happening here

Oh, so that`s what happened on Talladega Nights!
Ricky Bobby wasn`t insane after all!

@ kralmir

They are wearing fire retardant suits. We had an incident in high school where two students were burned by a similar fire (on a smaller scale). We could actually see the skin on their faces burned before us.

It isn`t that the fire is invisible, the color that it emits can`t be seen in bright (e.g. sun) light. Burn a bit of everclear on a sunny day and struggle to see the hot flame.

With all the money invested into racing, you`d think that they`d invest in IR goggles.

Did you not read the description? Did you not hear the funny British announcer.

Why do people keep asking "Why can`t I see the flames?!"?

This is why we will never have pure ethanol in passenger cars. You must add at least 10% gasoline to see the flames. (Also known as E-90)

Yeah, it`s true. Ethanol burns a very, very bright blue, so is "invisible" in normal light. This is still pretty freakin funny though...

Ethanol flames are very hard to see in daylight and that is what those racecars use for fuel. I might be mistaken but I think they have changed the fuelmix nowadays so you can see the flames.

Most of what you see in a flame is glowing hot soot. Alcohol burns very clean, so there`s nothing there except hot CO2 and water vapor which is nearly impossible to see in daylight. They could add something to the fuel to give it some color, but that would also produce soot in the engines. Maybe they could put something on the drivers` clothing to give the flames some color.

One nice thing about an alcohol fire is that you can put it out with plain water. Maybe what they really need are big shower heads in the pit area.

As an organometallic chemist, I can assure you that, even though you correct that alcohol burns primarily blue, that most alcohol(for all you who don`t happen to know, an alcohol is any chemical that has R-C-OH groups)flames are nearly impossible to see in broad daylight. If this were at night, you could probably see them.

@ PacoP42: Methanol burns with a flame that is invisible to the human eye. Try paying closer attention in Chemistry. I guarantee your teacher covered it at some point. Especially if you used alcohols in lab.
