Now this is why your fat, America. On that note, there are surprises on both ends of the scale.

I wanna see the rates of morbidly obese people now as opposed to people who are just a little chubby, which this chart is full of. it just makes you think of all those people that need a seat for each butt-cheek and look like they could roll around all day if you gave them a little nudge.

Fact of the matter is, the older you get, the slower your metabolism becomes, but your stomach doesn`t slow down the hormones that tell the brain you`re hungry. Not only that but we sit on our asses all day while we work or go to school, calorie burn is just not there, sometimes not even because we`re lazy.

It`s interesting how regional the numbers are, but it does make sense. Those numbers aren`t going to magically drop anytime soon either. If having overweight friends increases your chances of obesity, then imagine what 1 out of 3 people in the state does. (I`m looking at you Mississippi)

Boredhero78, come to Europe, You`ll like it. Probably be surprised at how nice, welcoming and varied it is. I was when I went to the US. Don`t believe in stereotypes, they are seldom true. Xenophobia does not help anyone, talk to the locals and be happy in your life, don`t hate.

Kind of makes you look stupid when you guys constantly slam on US with a Coke in your hand, and an Xbox 360 in the next room with a call of duty game in the disk slot. But yeah, whatever, Europe is so much better right? I guess that is why so many people immigrate to the US because, cold, snobby, Europeans countries are just so f*ing awesome."

Fair enough dude, In the meantime by your own logic, can you please stop using our inventions: language, computers, science, technology, medicine, western culture, democracy, internet. Obviously you`ve not visited Europe, it is as luxurious as the US. Don`t think you speak for most of America either so why not wise up? @sarph...One thing you guys fail to consider is the sheer amount of fat in America compared to Europe. I mean the average obesity rate might be equal, but there are so many more millions of obese people in America that you`ll have to excuse the use of stereotypes, not to mention not be offended by it. Also, if you changed from obesity rate to simply overweight, the numbers in America would SKYROCKET compared to Europe. So stop pretending you`re not fat America, you`re only fooling yourselves.

The population of the EU is about 500 million, the population of the US is 300 million. From what i could find, the obesity rate for the US is around 35%, and the EU is closer to 25%...so even with a higher rate of obesity, the US has fewer obese people...so, both parts of your argument are wrong.

Doesn`t really surprise me. I just don`t like it when obese people who constantly eat, and never exercise, act like they`re victims.

There`s an obese girl who sits next to me in one of my classes, and I`m friendly to her, but she`s constantly complaining about her weight. "I hate being fat, I can`t fit my fat butt in these chairs, you don`t know how LUCKY you are to be skinny, being fat sucks" It irritates me to no end, especially when she opens up her school bag, filled with candy and snacks to keep her occupied, and she`ll sit there and eat the entire hour and a half, complaining the whole time about being fat. And then when she`s eaten an entire family-sized bag of chips, a Pepsi, and a ton of candy, she`ll lean over and ask me if I have any food because she`s still wants to eat. Ugh.

@ Boredhero, good for you. Really. However you of all americans (see what I did there?) should know that this is the internet, and people play on stereotypes. Of course not all americans are fat, EVERYONE knows that. But in comparison to the rest of the world, (north) america is probably one of the fattest places. That`s why people keep making fun of it.

Going back to your other post, sure, there are lots of good things coming out of america. But there are also lots of bad things. This is the internet, and nowadays that equals entertainment, so focusing on all the positive stuff isn`t any fun, because no one will be mad and start ranting.

However back to a bit more serious note, looking at the numbers USA really wins the obesity-award. And that is a bad thing. The real issue is that fast-food chains are growing every year, while education isn`t. People keep getting fatter, both in america and europe, and that will be a serious issue in the future.

Well, how come most european countires are embracing the american lifestyle but at the same time not suffering from most of the consequences that average americans are struggling with daily? I believe that`s because "we`ve" got a slightly larger perspective. Such a heavy focus on consumption and spending leading to an efficiently market-run society WILL ultimately give producers enough power to allow them to influence normal lives to such a high degree that normal people don`t stand a chance against the insanity that is commercial-driven life.

There is one MacDonalds in the city I live in, and _everyone_ knows that fastfood is unhealthy. A family to a friend of mine goes there almost once a week, and that is exceptionally much. Most people don`t go there at all, myself I only eat fast food at maximum twice a year. I`m not even trying that much, it`s just that I live in a society where health and education are important values.

No, I was just pointing out if they used the BMI then they`re drattarded as some of the healthiest people are considered morbidly obese by that scale. Which was developed in the 1800s. If you`re going to accurately measure obesity you should have a body fat % test. All BMI does is take your height and your weight to get a number. It doesn`t take into account muscle or bone mass, which is a huge flaw.

every province and territory in Canada is leaner than the us. our diets are a lot the same though- i think it has to do with the types and brands of food. eg. fatty meat, growth hormones, antibiotics, milk and cheese made lout of these cows, fried foods, etc.

for example- almost everyone i know bakes their thanksgiving turkey in the oven. i never even heard of deep fried turkey until i visited the states the first time about 10 years ago. and i was floored when i got food there- the portion sizes are just massive. small changes go a long way!

"Yes, England is obese... but we have size 16-20 girls... not many beyond that."

Is this factoring in for the sizing differential? I mean a US 36in (which would run about a LARGE) shirt is 46 in UK size charts. A size 20 in UK for women would come out to a size 10 in US, so if you`re referring to OUR size charts, the size 20 girls you refer to are actually size 30 in UK sizes. :P

I live in texas. That being said, Austin is waaayyy more healthy than most cities in the country, definitely more than all the ones in texas (which are, indeed, full of walking whales).

Volsunga, no need to be sorry, it`s the internet. Everything is on a friendly base, even if it doesn`t always look like it :D

Though I still don`t understand it. In my reply to Aquaman I never said that europe was better health-wise. the "american" reference was merely because the following is seen as typically american, at least by non-americans:
My point was that "green zones" don`t automatically mean that everything is good there. I am aware of that, but some people treat these maps like traffic lights. green flashes up and they step on the pedal without asking. No matter how close green and red are actually together.

The excuse for the southern states is the types of food they eat. Those in the south (including myself, but I have somewhat of self control) love the greasy fried stuff. Plus I would have to say the amount of meat in the diet of southerners is a lot more then anywhere else. Either way I love the south and I hope it stays the same way forever.

Only if you use the extremely rough estimate of dividing weight by height. Real BMI measurements measure your fat percentage by a series of tests such as the "pinch test" and, if they want to be really exact, buoyancy tests.

Seastone, just a minor flaw, but BMI has nothing to do with percentages :) a BMI is "20" for example, not "20%"

Not meant to be mean, just saying in case you didn`t know or confused it or something. ;-)

I agree on that, but ut`s just a matter of naming it right. How about replacing the word "obese" with "unhealthy height-mass-ratio" ? Suddenly it seems correct if you ask me.

Seeing that the BMI was designed for fat people (of which I am one, so no offense intended in that choice of words), I can`t blame the creators for using the word obese.
It`s not the system that is incorrect, it`s the naming of the "statuses".

But I`m not an expert on that field :)

So I just looked it up, and Utah is the only state in the union that is not classified as overweight by average body mass index with an average BMI of 24.68%. I think that is why they chose to use percent obese instead. For BMI averages, the winner (er... loser) is Louisiana, with an average of 27.1%. That is overweight, but not obese, as obese is >30%.

@cory:

That may be, but it`s still considered obese when your weight and height don`t match, and that`s misleading. Someone may be stacked with muscle, and have no fat, but it is still called obese by these numbers.

"wouldn`t it be more correct to rate each state by average BMI?"

BMI is misleading.

Say a person in 6`0" with 1% body fat, but weighs 220 and is ripped with muscle. Perfectly healthy, but considered obese using BMI.

"Ah, so it tells us that southern states have great food."

When a Southern woman gets famous for calling bacon grease "bacon seasoning" and spreads it over a head of lettuce, that means something is horribly awry in the nutrition field.

------------------------

sorry.. thats american bullcrap.. did you only see the shiny colors or did you see the numbers too? green, in this case only means "better"... not good.

see colorado vs. the others.. colorado has 19%.. we can assume thats every 5th person. Now most of the other states have around 25% or slightly more.. thats every 4th person.. you see it already? every 4th person versus every 5th person? not a big damn deal... graph suggests otherwise by using fancy colors like red for "danger" and green for "everything ok".. while in the green areas it`s NOT ok too.. just slightly better

Which scale is used to calculate this?

If it is the BMI (body mass index) then you can be ripped, with a body fat of 1%, but still be obese because you are 6`0" with 220 LBS of muscle.
