So now bands won`t have to hire slutty girls for their band, the normal looking girl with a good signing voice can sit back stage and let the men oggle her holographic ulterego.

People are now obsolete. Except when it comes to mindlessly singing along with a hologram...this is impressive but I technology will take over the world and humans will be finally be destroyed by our own "awesome" creations. I must say though, I like the song.

oh also @djer you certainly can get a 360 degree view via multiple cameras, in fact the technology is almost commercially available now. There`s a guy at UCI that`s merging kinect cameras and can easily interpolate viewing frustrums between his two cameras.

Here`s a link: You tube multiple kinect

@peabody different from what djer said, he said those in star wars, this is hologram (image against mirror) + a machine to simulate a tactile (touch) interaction with the image.

@djer the 3d images "exactly" like the star wars thing aren`t completely impossible either, but it will probably take a while to get there. You won`t ever be able to get something projected onto thin air, but the 3D image around a pedestal "base" (like in the prequel trilogy) is possible. The idea is high speed projection using a spinning mirror. The USC ICT graphics lab has a prototype. I could only find this on a cursory glance, but there`s more you can find on the projector itself if you dig around a bit.

Just because you look at a rendered projection straight on doesn`t make it a hologram. I`m sure that if you change the viewing angle by more than a few degrees you`d see how flat and oblong it begins to look.

Gorillaz did it at the MTV music awards along time ago....
And this is nothing special. Its not even a hologram.
There is a glass screen between the stage and the crowd and projectors that reflect on it.
At the beginning of the video you can see the glas perfectly. Not to mention you can see the reflections of the glowsticks on the glass throughout the whole video.

So now people pay to go to concerts to listen to audio files and watch a tv? Seems like something you could do at home.

----

A big part of any concert is the energy of the crowd. Especially for those people that like to go to clubs and dance.

Is it just me or did the singing sound like that white dog in Animal Crossing?

Transparent screen is nearly transparent. You can see the reflections of the people in the first few rows during the close-ups.

I was actually talking to some of my friends recently, and we realized that holograms like those seen in Star Wars or Avatar are impossible to create. Light can only be seen on a solid (or gas-like) surface, and can never show a 360 degree view. Ergo, barring some unforeseen technologically advanced lighting techniques, holograms will continue to be possible only in movies.

I was freaking out for a few minutes thinking this thing was SOMEHOW projected into a 3D space, but then I realized it`s just an image projected onto a glass screen, not all that impressive from that perspective, though I`m sure the voice synthesizing is kinda cool.

RoboPatton- I don`t know if you`re far wrong. I feel the exact same way. Also, sick rave/concert. Well its not a rave, too civilized. They look like they are sitting around 1:52, cause it looks like they are in rows of chairs. catchy song too.

So an image projected onto a mesh screen is now a hologram?

Male 1,920
Actually the real story behind this is that her voice is completely synthesized from a sampled woman`s voice. The software Vocaloid allows text to be synthesized into a song. The character Hatsune Miku was created to showcase the software`s capability. Here is a Link to an English song produced by this software.

Not really a hologram. And also not a circular stage. You can see the screen the image is being projected on to. It`s may seem "circular" at times due to the reflection of the audiance`s glow sticks on the screen.

Impressive that they could do this in a circular stage. Gorillaz did a similar thing years ago, but they had to limit the viewing angle and keep it very dark for the illusion to work.
