    Seriously??

Why can`t her family be happy for her? She`s obviously found someone she loves and makes her happy, shouldn`t that be enough?

I wish her the best in life and marriage, and hope her family comes around and sees how happy she is with this woman.

I hate christians so much. They impose their own morality onto their children, and their children grow up imposing that morality onto their children. But the thing is, a lot of this `morality` is more about ignorance, hatred, and fear. Rather than having people go out and make their own decisions on the world, and just teaching tolerance and love - they teach hatred and intolerance. It makes me sick.

First of all, she`s already a man. Second of all, squirel, do you honestly think that the only way one person can save another person`s life is by being a nurse/doctor or whatever you say you are? Because, if that`s the case, that means you`d let somebody jump off a bridge and try to operate on them after, rather than try and talk them down. That`s what he`s doing everyday, just by being himself in a world full of idiots like you who are too stupid to feel empathy towards anyone in a situation you can`t understand or in some way relate to. Her parents are the immature ones, their heads stuck so far up their own moral asses that they`ll disown their own child who just loves them and wants to remain a part of their lives for leading a life different than the one they planned for her. What`s irresponsible is bringing a kid into the world you only plan on raising and loving under certain circumstances. I hope you don`t ever have children.

Those parents should be ashamed. And any other parent that doesn`t except their childs lifestyle choice. Like she said, it`s not like shes going out, drinking, doing drugs, smoking...All he wants is to be happy, and if that means transforming herself into a man than they should at least tell her that they are there for her.

i have a cousin who is like this. Im not sure if shes gay or not becuase i never really asked her, but ever since i remember when we were kids she always dressed like a boy, and she always told everyone to call her George. (her actual name is Gloria). as for surguries and things she hasnt had any becuase shes not of age yet, and honestly idk if she wants surguries. its just like, this is absolutley not a choice. why would anyone choose to be ridiculed and hated for who they are when they wouldnt be if they stayed the same (and were happy that way)?

(continued) my parents were born and raised in a small conservative country, so they`re pretty traditional. and honestly, i know that if me or my sister were gay, there is no way in hell that they would support us.
hell, they barely speak with my sister just because she married someone that isnt from said country, and becuase she got a tattoo (in honor of my GRANDMA).
and speaking from that point of view, let me tell you. theres nothing sadder than knowing that your parents would love you less if you were different from what they wanted you to be.

for all of you with supportive parents- dont forget to tell them that you love them.

This is sad.... I can`t even begin to comprehend how hard it would be to not be comfortable in my own gender... and then on top of that, have my family disown me. I can`t believe they would make him choose between what makes him happy and them. Awful.

Side note: Great book on the topic of transgendered-ness: "She`s Not There" by Jennifer Finney Boylan. She used to be a man (a straight man) but always felt like a woman on the inside.

As a parent, I can understand not exactly being happy with the choices or paths our children take, but that DOES NOT mean you disown them because of it; on the contrary, one should supposrt them that much more, to let them know how much you truly love and support them. But some people are so selfish that they can`t see past themselves and see something like this as some personal attack/blemish on their parenting skills, and embarrassing them in front of their neighbors...

First off why even post this on the internet? what is this person looking for. Also one thing to understand. My son recently told me he is bi and It does not bother me but one thing you people must understand is no one has to accepet this person for their choice, they just need to respect the choice. If they disown their child it is their choice it does not make them wrong we must respect their views as much as they must respect ours.

@reptilia - too late, I already have 2 that I love very much. And I`ve actually felt empathy till it bleeds. I have a co worker who wants to go through the same thing this person has. Do I think it`s wrong? no. There`s nothing wrong with being yourself. Is it wrong to show this video, yes, whether or not her parents are right. I don`t think they`re right at all, but keep it personal. This is something that the family needs to come to grips with, not us.

So what`s the point of this set up? Yeah, I said "set up".

Why start a conversation with parents on a topic you KNOW they won`t approve of. Not only record it, but distribute it on the web? Way wrong.

Yeah, I disagree with the parents stance, But they weren`t viscious or mean. They stuck to their values.

But I think they were expecting privacy in a private conversation.

To Squirel and everyone else who doesn`t understand why it was vitally important that he post this video: do you realize how many people are dealing with the exact same thing he is right now? And how completely alone so many of them must feel? Or how weak? Or even disgusting, b/c having parents like that could easily make someone feel that way. So maybe some kids have managed to tell their family and been disowned by them. Maybe some kids are still too petrified and would rather live their whole lives in the wrong skin than deal with the shame in their parents eyes. But look at how he faces them, without faltering, knowing that he is right and there is no shame. It may not seem much to someone like you, who can`t relate to that situation and doesn`t try to. I get how someone else will watch that video and how it could change the whole life. But here`s him explaining it himself: "love yourself."

Just in the interest of Public Education....

He isn`t gay. He`s in the process of transgendering. Born a girl. becoming a boy. But not homosexual.

If you can`t wrap your head around that, well neither can most of the world so just accept it.

P.S. Posting what his parents obviously thought was a private conversation is a crappy thing to do. You can reach out to others in a classier way than that.

"I didn`t even know they had a surgery for a woman to become a man. I knew they had one for the other way around."

As far as I know, they don`t. FTM transformations involve breast reduction surgery and ingesting male hormones. The male hormones will deepen the person`s voice, allow them to grow more body hair and facial hair, and can enlarge the clitoris to the size of a small penis. Somebody correct me if I`m wrong, but I don`t believe they are at the point where they can turn a vagina inside-out in order to construct a penis.

"Yeah, I disagree with the parents stance, But they weren`t viscious or mean. They stuck to their values."

No, not vicious at all. They only said that it would be "selling their souls to the devil" to come to their child`s wedding. Calling their beliefs "values" doesn`t imbue them with some magical rightness. The belief that homosexuality is wrong can NOT be supported without pointing to an ancient, irrelevant text.

I`m mixed on this video. I`ve always felt Gay and Lesbian individuals are just normal human beings like the rest of us, and it`s rediculous that they don`t get to serve openly in the military and have marriage...

...but people who gender swap, are something else completely. It just seems wrong and unnatural to me honestly. The God reasoning the parents used is a religious cop out of an excuse, but I agree that it does go against the natural order of things.

The change its self is not natural but, the mental transgenderness is. Its my understanding that while a fetus is developing its brain that the brain is affected by the different concentrations of testosterone and estrogen in the womb. These concentrations change between each pregnancy as the female (mothers) body becomes more adapt to the chemicals. A high concentration in testosterone in the womb can make females male brained and a high level of estrogen in the womb can make males female brained.

But if you don`t believe that other people should have sex with people of the same sex if that`s what they`re into, then maybe you should think about minding your own damn business.

"You don`t see gay animals do you?" Actually, you do. It`s been observed in numerous species. And I`m not gay myself, but the idea that it`s "not natural" is absurd. Even among members of the opposite sex, do you choose who you`re attracted to? Could you choose to want to fcuk a guy? And if you didn`t already WANT to have sex with a member of the same sex, then why the hell would you? I sure as sh*t know that who I`m attracted to is not a choice.

I know this place is filled with tons of hate haters and homophobes, but im going to speak my piece whether people listen or not. I, a white, teenager from an extremely religious state and ultimately family, that personally thinks marriage is pointless (a ring and a pretty dress doesnt equal love) think that no matter what gender, race, religion, or condition, 2 people have the absolute right to marry each other. Just because your thousands years old scripture says its an "abomination" or "sin" doesnt make it true in the slightest. if the bible/Torah/qur`an said to stab your fu(k!ng eyes out with a camels d!(k would you? So stop spending money on anti-gay campaigns and put the money to better use, like anything!

Reptilia already posted the response video, and really, they seem like such an innocent couple.

This video got so many responses hating on the principles of the matter and bringing in judgment into the fray. The response video? Comments can be summed up in "You two are so drating cute"

I can understand how a parent might have problems with how their child chooses to live, and in this case wonder if their child is doing something that will make them unhappy. I would not have the slightest problem if this was one of mine I may add. But surely they would try their best to stay involved and be supportive- even more if it was a choice you felt was wrong. Very sad, for all concerned.

Why post this to the internet? I think reptilia made a great point as to why, but missed another reason for it. Many people see transgendered people as somehow inhuman, somehow less of a person, or an abomination. I`ve actually heard people say "yeah, but `it` doesn`t matter. `It` doesn`t have feelings".

Here`s a way to show just a small glimpse of the hell they go through. Maybe, just maybe, if enough people see things like this, that belief will change. And Hell will get a few degrees cooler.

    just my two cents.

@reptilia, again - I know why the video was made. I`m not an idiot. It`s hard to believe that in today`s multimedia society that there are that many people living under rocks, but there are a few. I`m not saying don`t speak out so that people can understand what you`re going through. I agree with you on that. It`s the method of the message I disapprove of.
Gerry said it best ` Posting what his parents obviously thought was a private conversation is a crappy thing to do. You can reach out to others in a classier way than that.`
That`s what I was trying to say. Before you think someone is anti-anything or `doesn`t understand` you should examine all the info. I wouldn`t expect you(reptilia) to post private intimate moments of your life unless it`s what you and everyone involved wanted to do. Let the parents post a video saying they ok`d the recording and post and I`ll retract everything I said.

If I had parents like that, I would post a response video to this one doing the EXACT same thing he did. And I would hope a million other kids followed that example. If his parents think that they`re on the right side in this conversation, there`s no reason they would be upset about this video being posted. They should have nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed of if they think they`re doing no wrong. In fact, it`s their son who they think should feel embarrassed and ashamed. But, I do hope they watch this video and feel embarrassed. Maybe worry about their reputation or something. Because it`d mean they know they`re stupid, out-dated, ignorant morons. The world needs to shine a light on such stupid people.

i loved the line "why not let him do the judging" im pretty sure that`s mentioned several times in the bible. there`s a parable that Jesus tells of a man who points out that another man has a splinter in their eye, when they have a plank of wood in their own eye. You cannot judge other people`s sins as a Christian, its just morally wrong, we all live in sin, that`s the point. i hate these parents. I bet their fat, well do they realise in the same passage that says gays go to hell it also says those who indulge in gluttony do too? f*ck them.

@mst2457- Here`s a quick rundown: Every person has a biological sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation- all of which occur on a spectrum.

Sex: The physical sex organs you are born with. Most people are female or male in this regard, but some are "intersexed," having some female and some male characteristics to their genitalia.

Gender: This has to do with a person`s identity, or self image. Most people`s gender is congruent with their sex, but some people claim to feel like "a man trapped in a woman`s body." Dissections of the brains of biologically female people who identify as men show that their brains have more in common with the brains of men than with women; and vice versa. Some people claim to identify as neither fully male or fully female, but it is rare.

    ...

    ...
Sexual orientation: Who you are sexually attracted to, with respect to your gender identity. If you identify as male, and you are attracted to women, then you most likely identify as a trans-gendered heterosexual man, regardless of the sex you were born with. Similarly, a person born as a man, who is attracted to women but also has the gender identity of a woman would probably consider themselves a trans-gendered homosexual woman.

Sounds complicated, especially to those of us who were born with our sex, gender identity and sexual orientation congruent with what society says they should be. But life throws some people a curve ball, and claims that any of these aspects of a person`s personality are "choices" have no basis in reality. There are mountains of evidence that gender identity and sexual orientation are no more chosen by an individual than the genitalia they were born with.

So to specifically answer your questions, mts:
"so is she straight then? Since he is going to be a man?...If they knew each other before all this and did stuff sexually, why would she want anything different?"

That`s really something you`d have to ask her. When his girlfriend met him, he may have already been expressing his male gender identity. It may be that she is bisexual. But going through hormone therapy for gender reassignment isn`t about doing anything to please his girlfriend, it`s about making his body feel more congruent with his mental image of himself.

"Does she want a tiny little fake-penis? Can anyone explain all of this for me?"

Hormone therapy can enlarge the clitoris, making it into kind of a tiny penis.

"Will she be getting married to a man and they will both be straight? Would this be illegal in any state?"

In some states, you can legally change your gender. If they are getting married in a state that doesn`t allow a person to do so, then from a legal standpoint, theirs will be a same-sex marriage, and would not be legally recognized unless same-sex marriage is. In California, however, they would have the option of either having a heterosexual marriage by legally getting his gender changed, or having a same-sex marriage. I think. I`m not 100% about all that.

    "I am stupid"

A stupid person would form immutable opinions on these things without first trying to learn more. The fact that you are asking these questions indicates to me that you are, in fact, NOT stupid.

As a parent, you have certain dreams for your children. And when your child makes such a life changing decision, then it definitely takes a while to come to terms with it. While I do feel sad for him and his parent`s initial reactions to his lifestyle, I feel deeply shameful that he would share such an intensely private moment without giving his folks some time to adjust. People are capable of change... time heals all wounds... and a parent`s love is unwavering and inculpable; even if initially misguided.

F#@#, I`m crying I feel so heartsick for them. To think about not being in contact with my parents because I was trying to be happy? They haven`t seen each other in years...I get anxious if I haven`t seen my parents at least once a month!

Do you know what FTM stands for? Female-to-male. Hence, the person in the video is male. Wow. How awful. I`m not gay but I can certainly relate to that sort of pain. I could never understand why my cousin`s parents kicked her out of the house when she came out at 17. And if his parents were so worried about him spending an eternity in hell, then why not enjoy the time they had now? I`m sorry but it always seems like the parents that are against it are usually just fueling the frustration, anger, and sadness that parents with gay or.. transitioned children have. Of course the child could block them out as well but the guy here seems to be making a concious effort to include his parents and family. I hope his parents come to their senses and go to the couple`s wedding and that they all end up happy.

Redman1978: There are most certainly `gay` animals. Homosexual intercourse/behaviour is quite common actually. Go read The Philosophy Gym`s argument for and against homosexuality (but more for). I have the book right here, I think I`ll post some of its points.

From The Philosophy Gym by Stephen Law.
The scene is a Christian man dreaming about his conversation with God about homosexuality.
    God- Wrong? Is it wrong?
Jarvis- Yes, you said yourself, in the Bible. `Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind: it is an abomination` Leviticus xviii,22.
God- Well I may have been hasty. I`m not so sure now.
    Jarvis- But you`re God!
God- Perhaps I`m not the real one. Merely a dream God- a figment of your imagination. Also, why do you assume the Bible is 100% reliable?
    Jarvis- You mean it`s not?
God- I didn`t say that. But see, if you plan on basing your morality entirely off of the contents of one book, you`d better be sure it`s the right book. And to what extent it can be relied upon. Flip back a few pages. Leviticus xi, 7-8. What is it?
Jarvis- `And the swine, though he divide the hoof... he is unclean to you. Of their flesh ye shall not eat.`
God- Ever eaten bacon? Then you`ve sinned! Further down.
    c

G- `...ye shall not eat of their flesh.` Didn`t you just have moules mariniere? Why aren`t you all boycotting seafood restaurants? If you read again, you`ll also discover it`s wrong to wear a jacket made of a linen/wool mix.
    J- I hadn`t noticed before.
G- Further on it says it`s sinful to lend money for interest. Yet you don`t condemn these?
    J- No..
G- But you confidently cite that passage to justify your condemnation of homosexuality. Picking & choosing, Jarvis.
J- But surely the bit about fish & jackets is outdated?
G- My word outdated? Okay fine. You`re using your own moral criteria to decide what passages to accept, right?

G- Then I think you should be honest. Instead of picking & choosing what you like best, claiming a particular section has my divine stamp of approval, I think you should just say YOU think homosexuality is wrong and leave me out of it.
    J- Very well.
G- So if YOU believe it is wrong, can you explain to me WHY it is wrong, and why these men deserve punishment?

...It goes on to talk about how it`s `unnatural`, & points out the fact that an American study of longhorn sheep, given the chance to mount a fertile ewe or another ram, 8% chose the latter, even managing to engage in..yeah. & the argument about how the penis is used for procreation & how it is grossly misused in gay sex; `God` points out that most body parts are if that would be true, about cleanliness, corruption of the young, & more. Why amused? Why do you argue that the person in the video is female? They identify as male, & says himself (himself, from the way I see it, because that person is a man) that he is on testosterone, mentions he is a man, & plans on marrying a woman?
Surely if someone legally changes their gender and identifies as male, has testosterone, etc, they are either a.) male, or b.) FTM transitioning, which means female-to-male, by the way.

If your argument with the `female talking to male` made sense, then why is it that the mother was the one talking mostly on the phone? Your rebuttal about the `wait `til your father gets home` phrase isn`t valid because, for one, since when was it the father`s duty to deal with disciplining the child about decisions/behaviour their child made that upset the mother? Are you suggesting women are incompetent at dealing with raising their own offspring?
Of course I don`t agree with what I just said above, but, using your logic, this is the argument against yours that I could make. Of course no where in that phrase does it mention raising children (because, also, the child may not even know their father) or anything, yet suggests the father disciplining the child, etc etc. So that argument (and the fake argument i made) really don`t make much sense.
Anyway I don`t really want to argue because I don`t see the point.

Sbeelz you posted a Wikipedia link that discusses sexual behavior in animals. The animals sometimes attempt to mate with other animals of the same sex but this does not make them gay. They do not have life long gay partner/mates, nor do they only mate with same sex animals. They also will mate with members of the opposite sex when given the opportunity. Sometimes dogs hump humans... Does that make them only attracted to humans? Does that make them want to mate only with humans and nothing else? I don`t think so.

It still amazes me that people continue to view gender identity and sexual orientation as choices. Also, these are two separate concepts; gender identity does not equal sexual orientation. Gender identity has to do with which gender one identifies with; so it is possible for a biological woman to identify as a man. In this case, the person in the video is a man, as this is the gender he identifies with. Sexual orientation relates to who you are sexually attracted to. Hopefully this basic information will cut down on some of the ignorance floating around here.

Redman1978- That Wikipedia page never explicitly says either way whether animals were observed exclusively trying to mate with those of the same sex or not, that`s just the conclusion you jumped to. Regardless, the claim that homosexuality is "unnatural" is baseless EVEN IF humans are the only animals which ever engaged in it. It is natural to pursue sex with those to whom one is sexually attracted. If a person is sexually attracted to members of their own gender, then it is natural for them to pursue homosexual relationships, and would be decidedly UNnatural for them to pursue heterosexual ones- because it`s not in their nature to do so. Attraction is not a choice, and while sexual behavior is, it is ridiculous to suggest that others should choose to alter their behavior to suit your values. By calling homosexuality "unnatural" you are falsely projecting your own personal values about sex onto nature itself- pretty narcissistic if you ask me.

Once again Sbeelz I do not care whether or not humans have sexual intercourse with members of the same sex, nor do I care if they are attracted to them. I simply don`t believe it is natural. I believe it is a choice, who you are attracted to. A straight man, could if he wanted to, begin to look at other men in a sexual way, if he wanted to. This is were we differ. I believe it is a choice, you believe it is something we as humans are born with. Although I do find your posts quite interesting, I believe this argument will lead nowhere. My opinion will remain unchanged as will yours.

Why on earth would some one WANT to forsake heterosexuality for homosexuality? Because it`s awesome being persecuted? Take the pastor who recently came out- a perfect example. He chose to repress his homosexuality, getting married and having kids- but he came out because he couldn`t lie about who he is anymore. If he could have chosen to stop being gay, don`t you think he would have? I don`t really care if you change your mind or not, but your opinion that homosexuality is "unnatural" is not grounded in reality.

That being said, I have a strong distaste for the word "unnatural" being tossed around. I have yet to see anything "unnatural" in my life, as everything I have witnessed has obeyed the laws of nature. Chemical weapons, nuclear power, synthetic drugs- these things too are often referred to as "unnatural." But these things are PERFECTLY natural. Human beings are a part of the natural world, as is everything we do and everything we make. The term "unnatural" is tossed around disparagingly by homophobes, Luddites and environmentalists alike. But nothing in this Universe is unnatural. This is partially why your comment rubbed me the wrong way, Redman. It`s the fact that you`re using semantics to suggest that the way you are is the "right" way to be, and that others are in violation of the correct order of things. Like I said, narcissistic.

And how on Earth could it be "unnatural". I have had dogs, and they hump other dogs regardless of gender. Of course it won`t produce offspring, but it is still natural.

OK, since no one knows this, first off, these parents are hiding behind the bible the way my family did when I told them I was not christian. "You`re going to hell" is not a valid threat to me anymore. When I came out as bisexual, again, I`m going to hell. I don`t believe in hell, unless it is being put on Earth to hear about how everything you choose is wrong.
Secondly, yes, they can construct a working penis from a female`s vagina, but there`s only one country in Asia that can do it.
And thirdly, transgendered people are referred to in the manner of the sex they are portraying or changing to not the one they are born with, IE a male going through the steps to become a female is called a "She" and vice versa.

I seriously love how the majority of people who claim that homosexuality is a choice are straight. Who would choose an orientation that ostracises you from most society? Who would choose to be something that can get you killed?
If you can "choose" to be a sexuality, can all these straight people have genuine relationships with the same sex, just because? I highly doubt that.

Also, the proper pronoun for this person is he. Not she, he. He identifies as male, therefore, have some respect and call him by his preferred sex.

Grrr! I don`t see how these parents can say that they still love their kid in the end. They basically disowned him in the beginning. It`s like they just decided to slop on some bullpoo so they didn`t sound like they`ve sold ALL their parenting values as well as their souls to God. However, it`s just that, bullpoo! Just cause they say it doesn`t mean it can be true in the face of all the contradiction poo they said before.

Yeah, I only went a couple pages back in the comments. I was getting too irritated by the use of female pronouns for this person, and by people that seem to honestly think that gender identity or sexual orientation could possibly be a choice. Seriously, who would choose that?

I had a ftm friend in high school, and he went through so much more crap than I did. I mean, high school sucked for me, but he came out of a beating with two broken legs once. HE deserves to be referred to as whatever gender he wants.

not every one who is a christian is like that just like not everyone who is black listens to rap. Those parents are not acting like parents. They need to grow out of their old fashioned ways and start acting like parents. Just because you hear of churches acting like this in some cases doesnt mean you should assume everyone is like that. I hate it when pious people act like that in the name of thier religon because it makes people think exactly like that and turns people away from it. They need to get their head out of their ass. Blame small minded people

@naturalblue The gender marker is, in most cases, LEGALLY changed after surgery. But, it is incredibly hard to live a normal life while looking/sounding/acting like a man and having to use female pronouns (or vice versa) until they get money saved up for surgery. So, transgender people unofficially go ahead and adopt the pronouns anyway.

sometimes you just can`t explain the way you feel but you feel that way from a very young age, we are fortunate enough in this day and age to be able to do something about this now. Everyone is different, to each their own. It`s what makes the world amazing.
