Not in the UK but probably on the Irish ones. We give a ridiculous amount of money to the unemployed with no incentive for them to go out and find a job.

    Doesn`t make it right, however.

Quite frankly, this guy makes a good point. He`s taking advantage of a flawed system. If the government gets its act together (be it a democratic or republican-run government, I don`t care), we wouldn`t be in a situation where not working is more beneficial than actually getting a job. In order to have a healthy economy we need a motivated workforce that actually has a reason to go out and earn money.

Until then, I say we should all take advantage to show the flaws of the system in its current state.

@smagboy1, i haven`t had my taxes raised, but I`ve had my tax cuts taken away for the upcoming year, but I don`t even have a problem with that. We need a flat tax rate and raising the budget by a trillion dollars both of the past two years is going to help balance the budget. Mandatory healthcare or face a fine sounds pretty socialist to me though. I should be able to live sick without healthcare if i want to. What should change is hospitals shouldn`t help me if i can`t pay

hypocrisy is a staple of the American political climate. We are generally ideologically fairly conservative, but in practice almost always liberal. Like I said, I don`t support Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid, but if I qualified for them I`d take full advantage of it. If they`re gonna take my money I`m gonna use the perks of it.

"hasn`t affected a single one of them--not a single person I`ve asked has had their taxed changed under Obama, yet, he`s a raging socialist Nazi? "

Why do people assume that just because your taxes don`t get raised it means you are not effected? I don`t know this kid`s case personally but there are a lot of people who now don`t have jobs because the people who employ them have to lay them off because they are getting taxed so heavily.

My entire family is Republican, and I don`t agree with much the a Democratic side of things. However, if it wasn`t for the Democrats pushing for more unemployment help for people without jobs my family would be living on a street corner right now. Unemployment was made to help families keep afloat when they lose their job. Not for the single douche bags boasting on facebook about how unemployment pays more than a part time job. Hell I lost my job and then went back to my old pizza job and I have a blast there. I would rather work my butt off 6 days a week than sit around taking unemployment. It`s not what I want, but I try my best.

Screw people like FaceBook boy up there. I`m sure he didn`t even vote yesterday.

I live in Finland, which in your standard is probably a socialist country. Well, right now I`m unemployed but able to study a new profession as I raise the unemployment allowance. When I graduate and get a job, I`m happy to pay taxes to give this opportunity to someone else. If you think that is evil socialism, then you lack sense of community.

We also have a national health insurance here, and lucky so, because twice I have been taken to hospital by ambulance and I spent time in hospital as well. How much did I pay for all? Nothing! That was all covered by taxes I and other Finnish are happy to pay. That`s how you get equal services when in need. I hope I made a point here! :D

Why do we insist on fixing a broken goverment.Generally speaking if an electric motor keeps on breaking and you keep on getting it rebuilt instead of completly replacing the electric motor. The old rebuilt electric motor keeps on breaking and keeps on costing you more money via parts, energy consumed vs new motor energy consumed and other factors then buying a completly new motor .My point is you can keep on patch fixing goverment programs it gets worse and worse costing us the tax payers.Instead lets do away with the inefficent programs and invest in our own futures instead of having the goverment force us to invest in everyone elses. This man has proved that it is more economical to sit on his butt then go out and find a job.On everyone elses dime.If you dont do nothing about the problem it wont be fixed. And you will continue to pay into broken systems that you pay into and will never recieve there benifits.

Finland is an example of how to do government health care right. The problem is there are a lot of ways to do it wrong too. I think its stupid and unfair if you only cover part of the population. This is coming from a pretty conservative person.

@dubtac= you are exactly correct about that. Unfortunately, look at the men we have in office. Bunch of closed minded old generation, old fashion thinking (ie: "barefoot & in the kitchen pregnant" style of thinking)that don`t accept change and are stubborn to change & progression of thinking. Also this is another way to aid the dumbing down of America, because dumb people are subservient people, intelligent people are more likely to over-throw this failing government. What do you think?

@Terrijo, that is awesome. I would love to live in Finland someday actually. After researching some basic things, like the health care and what-not I was really impressed. Also, Finland doesn`t get involved in obscure and murky wars. That is a huge plus to me! Finland is the second most stable country in the world I believe, and the third best place for a woman to live and work because of equality in the work place and such-or so I`ve read, you`d know about these things more than I of course. I personally don`t see the evil in socialism. But then, I`m a bad American I guess :P Your point was well made. I just need to learn Finnish and then I am so moving to Helsinki.

@dubtac= we have a democracy, that really about as good as it can get... the problem isn`t the system, its the people. for democracy to work well, it requires an interested, intelligent, educated population. On top of that you have all the people within this system that have a very egocentric position. Everyone is "all about me and mine, screw the other guy" which is all fine and good if its a friend of yours, but not if you are the other guy. The libertarians, communist, socialist, ect. have all formed their systems with the idea that man should care about and help his fellow man. Until we as a species realize that the our support system is made up not only of the people around us, but also of the plants and animals, we aren`t likely to make much headway. Your logic is sound, but the problem isn`t the motor itself, or any of the mechanical parts, its the idiot that keeps flipping it from high to full reverse without engaging the clutch.

I kind of get what he`s saying, as stupid and douchey as it is lol. In Ontario the laws involving renting a property are very much in favor of the tenant. It`s incredibly easy to screw your landlord out of thousands of dollars worth of rent money with no consequences by simply dragging out the court process by not showing up. While I really hate it when tenants do that to us, I find it hard to blame them when the law makes it so easy to take advantage and get a free place to live for 3+ months. I`m more mad at the government for letting them do it than I am at the tenants for exploiting it.

    "Government ownership of property"

This is EXACTLY what the United States was NOT founded on...

The United States was founded on freedom, ownership of property and individual responsibility.

I`m all for helping others but to tell you the truth I don`t feel very charitable on April 15th.

The Declaration of Independence says that "all men are created equal" it never says that we will all end up equal (unless you count equally dead).

America is the land of opportunity where the sky is the limit, not some arbitrary amount of wealth that the government says is enough.

We must teach each other correct principles of giving generously and helping others by our own choice. Having the government take away wealth only makes people want to horde the rest.

By personally giving someone money or something, it puts a face to that gift and will be more treasured because of it. It is easy to lose sight of the fact that a

Do you really believe that people are better off having their lives managed for them than they are having individual freedom? Really? or... is just a little socialism needed? Oh... and who gets to decide how little and how much and for who? You?

Because the better your degree the more likely it is you vote democratic (up to 80% is you have a PHD).

Similarly the better your schooling the more likely you are to vote Democrat.

Similarly if you just look at raw studies on IQ the higher your IQ the more likely you are to vote Democrat.

Now are all Republicans stupid? No, some really rich people who offshore your jobs with the tax money they don`t pay thanks to Republican policy... THEY should be voting Republican.

"What society or Nation that embraces Socialism has ever been successful?"

All of Europe given extremely loose definitions of socialism.

The debate is "how much government control", not "what do we call Socialist", because that is entirely subjective bullpoo.

Do you like roads? OMG socialist!
Do you like having an army? OMG socialist!
    Etc.

So lets focus on "Countries that have national healthcare" and call them socialist (lets bastardize the term completely to suit your worldview for now).

    What do we have?

@Tridirk: Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland... well, most of western Europe have what you would call pure communism... :-p (Would love to attend a history class in american high school, wonder what they teach you!) According to the UN the living standards and level of education is far beyond the US here. It is a social democratic system, and though it`s not perfect at least it`s safe and most people have equal opportunities. P.S. USA is the only developed country in the world without a public healtcare system. But, it`s like some people say: "it`s the rest of the world that`s wrong! You`re probably the only one that`s right. Funny though that noone who has implemented a public system ever wanted to leave it again... :-p

So... from what you typed all of Europe is socialist and their system is pure socialism?
Funny how many of you from other places can sling the barbs at the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, but get so defensive over a question of socialism.

    Are you proud socialists?

Not making a value judgement, just wondering.

Oh... and let`s see I received my education in a country that believes in freedom of thought, and you received yours from a country that is socialist and yet you have a better more true understanding of the world than I? Really?
Thanks for emphasizing my point Lib=Arrogant regarding your education statistics. "Oh... if only all were as smart as I would they believe as I".

As far as you being wrong... I didn`t say you were. You are different and like your socialistic systems such as public health care, if it works for you and you like it GREAT. We don`t want what you have or want your Public Health care.

OH... and all just my humble American opinion, no disrespect intended as I value different opinions and ideas.

Maybe, socialized medicine could come up with a cure for arrogant liberal attitudes and thin skins?

I spent a couple of weeks this past summer in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium, all of the countries were great. The people were friendly, helpful and treated me as an American Tourist great. I was also very proud of the many Memorials to American and Allied service men throughout the countryside. I wish more Americans could visit and meet some of the people I did.

Thanks to them from an American.

    Are you proud socialists?
I`m proud of the fact that we have reliable emergency services, an excellent army, a good justice system where everyone gets legal representation, traffic lights that are almost always working, freedom from worry about the financial impact of getting sick or hurt, rubbish regularly collected from a big bin right outside the door of my flat...

If that makes me a proud socialist, then I suppose I am. But it seems that the only thing on that list that you guys don`t have is healthcare. So aren`t you pretty much socialists too?

I know I`m jumping headfirst into an argument I may regret, but please clarify some things for me. In Aus, taxes pay for:
    -Roads
-Garbage collection (might be rates, not taxes, unsure)
    -Public Schools
    -Public Health, etc., etc.

Is America (generalised) saying it does not want these things, or simply that it will not pay for them, or something other entirely? Is this debate over whether or not they should be paying taxes? Is it over whether or not they want a dole and public health and education?

Speak for yourself, buddy. We`re not all selfish non-nice individuals who are unwilling to pay a small tax to help our fellow Americans. We don`t all only see us as equal after tragedies.

Oh, and don`t be stupid when it comes to universal health care. There are still private options for people who enjoy paying through the nose for health care. Private coverage and private practitioners.

But as long as you send your kids to private schools and send all your regular mail via UPS or FedEx, I won`t label you a hypocrite.

My country established parliamentary democracy CENTURIES before your country even existed.

Much of the ideals with which your country began came from ours; it was British subjects, after all, who signed the Declaration of Independence.

So don`t act all pompous, like you`re the only shining light of reason and fair play in the world. You didn`t invent it. You just inherited it.

Mus... I never claimed we invented personal freedom, just that it is a pillar to who we are. Thanks for your countries contribution to it.

lil....The US Postal Service is supposed to pay for itself. In that it doesn`t is a reflection of government not managing a service as it should, thanks for making my point. I have no problem with a letter costing what it should to be sent. If it`s $2.00 then it`s $2.00. UPS and FedEX as you mentioned are pretty efficient and make money don`t they? We Americans are a very charitable group and none of us want poor people to not have health services or basic needs. From your statement are you poor? Or do you simply want health care that doesn`t cost you any of your own money? Is that why health care is attractive to you? Or are you very generous and want to make sure all of us are as generous as you? Or are you simply generous with others finances?

@Musuko42 we inherited our just like you inherited yours, so don`t toot your own horn too loudly.

@eskimo9 The question is more along the lines of what is a basic service that taxes should pay for. Should a person with no children pay taxes for schools? Should a working person pay for welfare for someone who doesn`t want to work? (not can`t, just doesn`t want to) etc... Don`t even start talking about military/defense spending.

@duffytoler (and similar) He`s not a hypocrite, he states outright, he makes more that way, it`s not right but he`d be stupid not to use it. If he gets a job he`ll be taxed so other people can do exactly this, why not use it until it gets fixed?

My wife and lose 25% of our income right out of our paychecks to taxes, that`s 10 hours out of every 40 I work that I give away, then we pay property tax of a couple grand every year, we claim 0 exemptions on our pay and still owe 2000$-3000$ every year in additional taxes, and we pay sales tax,

@tridirk: I deliberately left myself open for the poor comment because I know it`s a common fallback for your side in this argument. No, I`m not poor. Through my work I even have free health insurance because I have no dependents and I don`t smoke. If I go through the year without getting sick, my medical expenses are $0.

I just happen to not be greedy.

And that bit about Americans being "a charitable group" only applies to when it`s trendy to be charitable. Only when someone can donate money to a popular cause voluntarily so they can brag about having done so. So like I said... after tragedies, we`re all Americans.

On a side note, that`s a pretty good contradiction you made there. "We don`t want everyone to be covered!" a few posts down followed by your recent "We want everyone to be covered!" Of course we`d have to assume that only poor people don`t have insurance to begin with, but that`s always been the assumption, right?

    lil...

Did I say "We want everyone to be covered" by Insurance? or the Government? I thought I said, we are charitable and would like all poor people to have basic medical care, food, and housing. I didn`t say the Government should provide it by taking money from everyone, creating a bureaucratic office, which will pay more federal workers way to much money in salary and benefits and hire way more workers than a private company or religious organization would to offer help to the less fortunate.

As far as trendy giving... yes that happens, but it is still giving isn`t it? Here is an interesting article about our generosity click here for "A Nation of Givers" Not bad for even trendy people don`t you think?

As a public/gov consultant I can tell you that my 33% taxes + prop taxes + sales taxes could be used better. If we held goverment to a higher standard a little socialism and a lot of personal responsibilty would work great.

I like all those services, I just want them done well and for the right price. I want all dead weight trimmed. I want no services that support freeloading(reasonable safety nets excluded). Public funds should not be used for endowments or failing programs or any service that is not vanilla. NPR not vanilla, no tax money. When I say vanilla I don`t mean boring, because they are that. We have well over 30 language translations for welfare and socal services. Why? English is the common language. No one who is raised here or has reasonable rights to the systems is bereft of english. Massive expense not needed. We have expensive studies on how to make welfare users FEEL better about the system. Why? And it goes on...

The U.S. could save a lot of money by just not helping other countries and defending other countries. Close all military bases overseas. Let the U.S. become more isolationist. Let the rest of the world defend their own borders, fight their own wars and when a disaster strikes find others to help them. In two world wars, we defended europe because they got themselves into war.

There are armies of this guy. Individuals with 5 second attention spans, horrible handwriting, no concept of responsibility and they`re pretty sure they`re right. They jump from job to job and are more than likely todays un or under employed. They are the spawn of the Palins. The Situation gets plucked off the streets of Jersey makes $5million and can`t even imagine his success because he knew it would happen. That`s who this douchebag is. He`s the guy who doesn`t have insurance. Liked it just fine the way it was and why not? Things will always work out.
Social services were invented in a time where a mans work ethic was everything. Out of a depression, flush with cash and sick of seeing old people begging on the streets, our country got together, invented and implemented a safety net. They didn`t mean for it to help this nitwit it`s just sorta morphed into this.
As drated up as this situation seems, it`s nothing compared to our military spending. Of the two, this is Ok by me.

    @CzarElad,
Just to clarify your statement, we didn`t defend "Europe", since Germany and Italy are part of Europe too. Other than that, isolationism might work for other countries but unfortunately the US has invested itself too much in the future of other countries to envision a worldwide elimination of all overseas bases. Not to mention the impossible to overcome backlash which military contractors would unleash upon the US gov`t if even a hint of eliminating bases surfaced.

Howlingwolf, I don`t think the contractors would mind at all. As soon as the US military stopped providing security throughout the world, the armed forces would be much smaller, and private security companies would swell with new recruits which they would then hire out to police the places the US left behind. The CEO`s would be sending the president Christmas cards, taxpayers wouldn`t be paying for an international presence, and politically we`d be free.

While you say Pearl Harbor was caused by our Isolationism, I say 9/11 was caused in part by the extent of our reach. The truth of the matter is that (especially around these boards) the rest of the world thinks we are fat and dumb, like the Roman Empire before its collapse. And I say if you don`t appreciate the assistance, bring it somewhere that it will be appreciated. Failing that, if you want to keep calling us an Empire, I say we show you what an Empire is.

Do you seriously believe that America has bases all over the world out of selfless generosity?

Let me be clear: America has bases all over the world in order to insure its on defence; by being able to engage any aggressor on their own territory, it means that America does not have to engage them on their own.

To all those people who think this guy is being "soooo selfishzzz!1111!!!": Give me a break!

You expect somebody to work 40 hours a week while somebody else is getting MORE MONEY to sit at home doing nothing and live off the government dole? That he should sacrifice 50% of his waking life for "the good of society"? Puh-leeaaase!!

The problem is that unemployment benefits are too high! Why work when you make more doing nothing? Nobody is going to do that. What they should do is do away with unemployment all together, and replace it with a system where they set up a bunch of minimum wage jobs, and if you lose your job, you can take one of those. Then watch the unemployment rate drop like a rock as all these people who supposedly "can`t find work" magically find a job in no time.

Well how about all of the politicians` fat pension cheques? 54 cents of each of the taxpayer`s dollar goes to "manditory spending" which includes welfare, SSI, ect. only 13% of that is for unemployment. I`m sure when you`re 80 you`ll want medicaid and social security too. The government has been doing it for almost as long as our country has existed. Everyone need to quit their bitching and rather than look at everything else around them, look at themselves. This is a good example. You are part of the problem, like it or not. You can use both sides of the paper, quit smoking and recycle all you want you still make waste and similarly you still spend some of the government`s money.
