xxxveganxxx, about the "not being able to dream up new faces" thing, I`ve read that too, but I don`t believe nor think it`s verifiable. I`ve dreamed up some pretty horrendously nightmarish faces of which I`m sure don`t exist.

TinEye says that this image has been shown in 187 other sites, including a few credible news organizations (like telegraph.co.uk) so I wouldn`t dismiss it as an independent psychological test by the website linked.

I agree with one of the commenters, Thinking guy. The man pictured seems to display archetypal `human` features which might be something of a mental template for how people look from the perspective of a dreaming individual.

Actually, I read something saying that you can only have faces in your dreams that you`ve seen before... Since you can`t think of new faces when you`re sleeping or something.

i think this is an experiment to see how many people are inclined to hypnosis. i`ve been taught similar kinds of experiments in my psychology classes: some people are inclined to create fake memories when an authorized person shows them evidence-ish things.

like this article gives us: "many people have seen him before. from every country, people have seen him. have you seen him too? maybe you`re `special` just because he has visited you. because we are looking for such people. are you one of the special ones? have seen him in your blurry dreams that you never remember the most part of them? i think you did. i think you have seen him before. think! remember.. remember seeing him in your dreams. because you did. "

@DoTheKatango-
By that logic- that your brain can combine features of faces you`ve seen- you could literally see any possible face in a dream. I`ve seen thousands of faces, if not millions. I could easily combine the features from those faces to come up with any conceivable face. Hell, most people I see look like other people I`ve seen. Same goes with objects. Basically what you`re saying is that you can`t dream that which is unimaginable.

The idea that you can`t see a face in a dream that you haven`t seen in your waking life is based on the fact that visual images during dreams are pulled from the memory part of your brain. (I forget the technical terms, sorry)
But the flaw here is that we can create new faces based on features of various people. You can`t create completely new features, but your brain can arrange htem in new ways.
By the same logic, you can`t dream up completely new objects in a dream, but your brain can take pieces of things you have seen and create something new with them

I`ve seen this man once in a dream! I was when I took a nap right after the first time I saw this post and there he was...crawling out of a cows ass! He said to me, "I have something very unimportant to tell you!" Then the cow turned into a bull and he fell to the ground behind the bull as a steaming pile of dook-e.

in exposing a bunch of people to the image of `this man`, it becomes valid dream-fodder for the brain. congratulations; by illustrating what you are researching you`ve destroyed any chance of researching it.

Yeah, well neither does the idea of Jesus having flowing blonde hair and blue eyes. This guy at least looks like he could be Jewish :-P

"Nope: It`s impossible to see a face in a dream that you haven`t seen before."

That sounds like bullpoo to me, but if you have something to back that up I`d be interested in reading it. While most of the people in my dreams are people I know during waking life, I`ve definitely had dreams featuring people I have never met while awake.

Facial recognition is one of the most powerful forms of visual memory. You naturally seek out a face in everything you see. You can see a face in almost anything - potato chip, blankets, trees, clouds etc. You always hear people talk about seeing a face in something and calling it a ghost or jesus or elvis. But never hear about seeing a hand, foot, finger, toe etc.

I have seen this before. I first saw it on a creepy thread on /b/. After considering it I think it is typical. I mean, consider the facts. The face is unremarkable and very average in every feature. Not bald, but not a full head of hair. Eyes nose and mouth are not too big, not too small, etc. etc.

It has already been established that people usually never see faces in their dreams that they recognize. If this is true then people are going to be very general about a facial description.

I don`t think there is anything to this.

Real life sandman, clearly.

More seriously though, this guy doesn`t look in any way distinct enough. If tons of people from around the world had spontaneously drawn this exact man saying it was someone from their dreams, that would be weird.

Showing the picture to people and asking if they recognize him is certainly not definitive.
