The answer is very complicated and relates to the uncertainty principle that connects the wave and particle duality of matter which leads to the existence of a ginger`s soul...

@ Jotunn. First, as for your source, I was just curious what reading they were using for interpreting Plato.

Second, what I was calling ridiculous is your assertion that because Plato, someone himself who wrote homo erotic poems, preferred leaders that were in PLATONIC male love relations, it doesnt mean all of ancient Greece happened to believe the same.

The source you pulled the quote from about rulers Plato also talks about how the best love is platonic and sex itself is pointless if not for procreation.

If you were to examine our society 2000 years from now you would find all kinds of homo erotic art, literature, etc. Does that mean its widely accepted in our society?

You`re right Weakmonkey, my statement did imply that I was knowledgeable about ancient Greek culture. I gained my possibly false conclusion concerning Greek norms from the introduction of the paper `Evidence for a Biological Influence in Male Homosexuality` by Simon LeVay and Dean H. Hamer in the Scientific American, May 1994.

I would be interested in these other sources if you would be willing to mention them?

Shadowmoses

"1st Corinthians 6:9. "

This passage also says that revilers or libelers - people who make derogatory remarks about other people, will not inherit the kingdom of God. All condemnations of homosexuals, including your own, are reviling, or libeling as some translations have it, which means two things:

1)Homophobes are condemned by this Bible passage

2) If Paul actually had meant homosexuals, he is also condemned by his own words, guilty of reviling homosexuals, and if he barred from the kingdom of heaven, then his writings are suspect at best.

Just remember, the moment you applied to it GLBTQ people, you became a reviler and barred yourself from the Kingdom of Heaven.

Repentance - its not just for other people.

Thank you so much for explaining this. I always knew about the bad translation but knowing the exact facts is amazing. Well done IAB, I actually learned something here.
Thank you.

If I had thought that anyone else was reading it, I would have been less antagonistic. I was arguing at ShadowMoses.

I`ve trawled through this issue a lot, reading various viewpoints and speaking with a couple of people who can translate the ancient languages to get literal and interpreted translations. I`ve come to the conclusion that it is theologically sound for Christians to be unbothered by homosexuality. The allegedly unequivocal and extreme condemnation of homosexuality in their bible simply isn`t really there.
Out of curiosity, Angilion, where did you find a copy of the original Greek NT? I`ve been looking for one for a while and I can`t find it.
I use an online version - it`s not uncommon online.

My Greek is very crap (I chose Latin at school instead). I`m not good enough to do my own translation. I know a bit about the cultural context though (which was Roman rather than Greek), which also matters.

Where do you get that from Jotunn? Im not really into the whole argument as for or against, but I do hate people who create info to suit their argument. Your statement that ancient greeks preferred homosexuals as leaders is ridiculous

That may be one persons interpretations of Plato`s writing, but I can find some that point to similar sources and tell you Plato was against homosexual marriage.

Most greek philosophers avoided the subject, but what most can tell is that while it seemed to be much more acceptable than it is currently in America, it was still not the social norm.

Almightybob, they`re pretty easy to find. I`ve been learning Koine Greek recently for the very purpose of reading the NT in Greek (I`m still not far along, so I can`t confirm Angilion`s translation) and I found mine at a used bookstore in my small college town, so you could probably find one in any bookstore with religious texts, and definitely in a religious bookstore. You can also find it online many places. I prefer greattreasures.org, as it allows you to see many versions at once alongside the Greek text with the advanced option.

Also @ the whole Angilion thing (yet slightly unrelated):

Ancient Greeks preferred homosexuals over heterosexuals as leaders.

As Plato wrote; "those whose sex had once been mixed were obsessed by coupling and often became adulterers, whereas people sprung from single-sex pairs were more fitted for the everyday business of the world. In particular, men whose bond was with another man were most suited for government and leadership"
(quoted from Scientific American, May 1994)

Q: Is I-A-B gay or just tolerant?

A: Homosexuality is when a person gives up on reality and decides to live in la-la land.

A: Who cares if gay people have feelings or not; they are in la-la land and feelings are backwards there.

Just in case by some freak of chance you actually want to learn what your bible actually says, I`ll give you the transliterated Greek:

malakoi is usually translated as `effeminate`. Which isn`t what it actually means. Even if it was what Paul meant, which standard of masculinity applies? I doubt if you live up to a 2nd century Greek ideal of masculinity. Which wouldn`t exclude homosexual sex anyway.

`arsenokoitai` is usually translated as `homosexual`. This translation is obviously wrong, as that`s a modern term that had no equivalent in ancient Greek. There is no known meaning of `arsenokoitai`. The word does not occur elsewhere. `arsen` is male-specific, but it`s not known if that is one of the roots of the word or a coincidence.

Given the possible meaning of `malakoi`, it`s plausible that `arsenokoitai` refers to women who don`t conform to Paul`s preferred sexed roles, i.e. women who act like men (in his terms).
Homosexuals will not inherit the Kingdom of God, along with a lot of other groups of people.

1st Corinthians 6:9.
Looks like I`m on again.

If you like, I can go into detail and refer to the original Greek in the correct cultural context. I know the Christian bible better than every Christian I have ever known bar 2. I can do this stuff for page upon page.

The quick summary is this: you`re wrong. 1 Corinthians 6:9 is Paul`s opinion and it does not refer to homosexuality with its modern meaning.

Firstly, it couldn`t because Greek in that cultural context didn`t have that concept.

Secondly, the word used is not any of the words used in Greek of that time to refer to people who had homosexual sex.

Thirdly, no-one knows what the word means. Paul made it up.

Fourthly, the word appears to be male-specific.

Fifthly, no-one knows for sure what another word in the list means either.

@ShadowMoses ya look like a nice kid & I kinda don`t want to pile on (he say`s piling on) but Ephesians? that`s your favorite book? Even confining oneself to the Bible, I find Job or Song of Solomon a much better read. (And if you watch Family Guy you`re already going straight to hell) peace

"Homosexuals will not inherit the Kingdom of God and neither will a lot of other groups of people"

Maybe.. just maybe if you spread enough of that shallow bible-thumping brilliance around, God might make you a Chambermaid in his "Holy Kingdom" in the ever-after life. After all, what better way to appease an all-loving God than to show the rest of the world just how close-minded and intolerant you are.
Call me completely rational but even as a straight dude, I think religious garbage like that has no place in this world. - Peace.

You`ll take those words seriously from the lie called faith but can`t think about the how little these fables make sense like..

-Adam and eve were the first two people to exsist which would make us all inbred.

-An all-powerful perfect being creates the world, but he screws it up so bad, he wipes it out with a flood and starts over.Somehow, flooding it and starting over didn`t work, so the all-powerful perfect being gets himself born as a human, gets himself killed, and that`s supposed to fix things. But this all-powerful perfect screwup still didn`t fix things, so he promises to come back and blow everything up all over again as "foretold" in the book of Revelation which still fixes nothing.

-One more, if all-powerful perfect being is so perfect and powerful why did man have to write his word?

gay people are happy people

original meaning of gay, to be happy, joyous, to be fill with joy (keep your mind outa the gutter on that one, ok), to express one self with happiness and good will toward others.

With the proper meaning to the word applied, the slang meaning loses a lot of its "bite".

ShadowMoses - are you actually serious? I`d think you were joking but with that username you`re probably not.

1st Corinthians 6:9 is a debated translation, and only a very select few denominations believe "homosexuals" is the correct word. Don`t get all biblical on IAB....let us not forget the link that said atheists know more about religion than the religious :-P
