Time Traveler Found In A Charlie Chaplin Film?

Submitted by: vorpalsword 6 years ago in Weird

A film maker has found an extra talking on a cell phone in a film made in 1928. What the hell?

It looks like the receiver from a french phone with no wire attached. I think she was just trying to be funny, like "haha, a phone with no wires. What a silly and impossible concept!"

Time isn`t just a word, in astrophysics it even has it`s own dimension. It is also relative, and traveling forward is most definitely possible. Speed and gravity both influence the passage of time dramatically. Traveling backwards though is a whole different ball game.

Kalimata, time travel IS impossible. Time is not a real thing, it`s a word. You can`t travel back or forward on something that is non-existant.

Wow he isn`t even holding any thing i can tell exactly what he is doing, he is scratching his head right above his ear with his forefinger, and middle finger while his ring finger, pinky, and thumb are curled in towards his palm

Occam`s razor kiddies.

Not saying time travel is impossible, because it is possible. Parallel World Theory, multiple dimensions, etc. It is possible, but it`s not probable that we are seeing one right now.

He`s very clearly not holding anything. It seems he`s just got his hand up to his face and is talking to someone either off camera or to himself. It could even be that he knows they`re filming and doesn`t want to appear, so he covered his face and was telling the camera person not to film him.

LOL exactly. Where are the cell towers... and who the hell would that person be talking to anyway? Using a phone from the future would require supporting transmitters and receivers. A phone cant exist standalone.

honestly if the person was really a time traveler im pretty sure she would have a much more advanced cell phone that didn`t need any kind of signal or anything. Think about it... this could be 100s of years from now.. im sure they`ll find a different way to transmit sound by then.

We have to at least develop warp travel before we can time travel.... I think we would find a way to send waves through a wormhole or something similar, because more and more things are becoming wireleless. Since the amount of wireless technology is constantly increasing, i think some time in the future when we are overpopulated, we will have to find a way to transmit waves like that, because there will be a ton of interference by everyone else`s devices. Just my theory, it might be completely wrong/idiotic.

There were no satelites that would carry a cell phone signal the first sattilite was launched on October 4, 1957. I think it is a portable radio it was very common back than and scence speakers that small sucked he/she is holding it to there ear, and probibly listening to sports and comenting on it. when i watch football even if i am alone i still yell stuff out(american football btw) soccer sucks ass.

Damnit, 6 pages of comments and on the 6th page, batmanners makes my point:

Ignoring the many other good reasons why this can`t be a time traveler, would someone from the future, who can clearly see the cameras, walk past them using an obviously futuristic object?

its the goverment who has got far ahead in technology.
the reason why not to introduce a mobile cellphone as we know it, is for commercial reasons.
they make money every year with us buying the best of the year. if we could buy a mobile cellphone back then, we wouldn`t buy the best of the best because there is nothing new to put in them.

Or she didn`t want to be filmed. This isn`t part of the movie, it`s part of the opening night...so it would seem. So she might have been walking by, and put her hand up, and eventually looked to the side to see the camera.

If ti was a traveller from the future....why fake a cell phone call to be on a charlie chaplin DVD extra feature while you can possibly become a billionaire with the ability to predict trends and techs for the next 50 years.

So funny that we are so used to people doing this that we atomatically think cell phone. Could be any number of things...didn`t really look as if the person was holding anything. Maybe that person is just taking cues from someone and couldn`t remember where to stop, so they turned to ask.

Looks like a `film grain match and comp` test. The entire thing looks software comp`d, having different objects of like brightness begin dissolve at different frames.

The character appears to dissolve before the character in the whitish hat walks through frame.

I think it could be a gag to sell DVD sets or may just be an anomaly having to do with the techniques in restoring a 90 year old movie containing someone with a carbon hearing aid walking through a location and ruining a shot.

I agree with Eroneus, He`s holding his hat. theres no visible part of a phone anywhere in his hand, because, as any cellphone owner knows, when you hold a cellphone to talk into it, theres always a bit sticking out of both the top and the bottom.

Problem solved. Google "Ear Wax Museum" It will take you to a page on the history of hearing devices (Hearing Center Online). Look at the second illustration down from the top of the page. The woman is using a bell resonator style of ear trumpet. They have the short, flattened shape that would cause her hand to look as though it was holding a cell phone.

"For argument`s sake, let`s say a time traveler DID go back in time to 1928 with their cell phone. Without cellular towers, they would get no signal whatsoever and therefore couldn`t possibly be talking to anyone"

so in the future when they invent a time machine they can`t event a phone that works anywhere without signal towers?
i feel if they can manage one they can manage the other
however i do not believe in the concept of time travelling, so im gonna go ahead and say that i don`t care why there`s a phone in a very old movie, someone else solve this please!

OK the arguments of time travel here should not even be made. Perhaps a more realisitc explanation can be made.

She (He) is holding something, and obviously talking, BUT.

Ever seen a torrettes victim? Possibly someone with a case of cerebral palsy? An extra this person may be but it may have also been the product of "Friends of Friends". Maybe a deal or favor was made to have the (theorectical) person with a mental deficiency to walk on camera. Just to give them one wish.

Could also be a product of poor filming requirments. maybe the person was just sractching their head while holding something, the director shouted out and the person shouted back with (theorectically) is evident by the fact that the person faces the camera while talking. They decided it was too expensive to reshoot so they kept the take.

Or we can continue argueing about time travel, cell towers, hearing aids and alien anal probes.

My only theory, if indeed it is MEANT to be a phone in this shoot, is that Chapman was delivering his personal imagination of how people might one day speak to each other as freely as we do today.

Perhaps even... Chapman had some knowledge of the shrouded view of technology many of us have come to accept. It is my belief that technology has always been years ahead of what the general public is aware. Maybe Chapman knew this and suspected a concept or theory of radio transmission existing in that day could lead to this result.

Even if the assumption that this person is holding some technological device turned out to be accurate (NB. it is not accurate), at least the technology for transmission and reception of radio waves existed at the time, and had done for 30 years or more.

Does anyone honestly think that if someone actually had the seriously advanced technology to time travel that they would still be using cell phones to communicate?

Not even to mention the fact that if it truly were a time traveler, wouldn`t they have already discovered that they had been discovered in a film and went back through time to intercept the film or undo it entirely? Then we wouldn`t be watching it or discussing it now.

Why are so many people hung up on the absence of cell towers? If you accept that time travel might be possible why is a cell phone like device limited to what our current technology can do. Perhaps the old lady is talking to her own time via a time-phone which uses technology radically different to our mobile phones today.

Why would somebody be using a cell phone when there is no cell networks or towers to receive the signal? It`s a handheld radio and she`s not talking, she`s laughing while chewing something, likely tobacco. Handheld radios existed in 1928, they just didn`t have much range and could only receive signals about a mile away, which is fine since this is filmed in Hollywood, where there would be a signal. If you were going to bring a cell phone to 1928, it wouldn`t be a smart phone, as they depend heavily on the network infrastructure that wouldn`t exist at that time. You`d bring one of those cheap-*ss phones that they give you for free, because you could more easily build your own interface with the phone system of the period.
