I`m like a meta-geek, because I`m obsessively knowledgeable about many obscure things. If there was a bird geek, I`d be that. But I`m also Star Wars/Trek, WoW, academic, and book geeky, too.
I always thought an academic geek was considered a nerd...geeks are more trivially obsessive than practically.
So, along these lines, I am still trying to figure this thing out. Would a total studly hunk like Indiana Jones be an "Archaeology Nerd/Geek" because he studies Archaeology obsessively? Even though he is good looking and gets laid a lot?

I always thought the Geek or Nerd designation clearly implied a lack of social skills.

Serious question: does that mean every college professor is a "geek" since they are experts in their subject matter?

@NitroJunkie - Those are called grease monkies or gearheads. I doubt any mechanic would ever want to be called a geek in any manner.

In any case, I`m so the gamer and otaku. Shamefully proud.

Why is otaku in katakana...? It`s not a loanword, is it?

Guess it could be like "techie," but "oteki" is very pronounceable in Japanese.

Just because Blizzard made Starcraft and WoW, it does NOT make me a WoW geek of ANY sort.
And where`s the auto/mechanical geek??

Just beacuse they write the word "geek" after something doesn`t mean that the person who likes said thing is a geek. Its like saying someone is a Star Trek jock. Geek still means what it did 10 years ago, 20 years ago etc..

The only new thing is geek chic, which basically just shows that attractive people wearing tank tops and glasses are still attractive people.

"Otaku geek" is technically redundant, since that`s already what the word means. It`s technically an even more offensive form of "geek" referring to someone so obsessed with their interest that they never leave the house.

*weeps for the fact that I know this and actually posted it*

I`m a bit of everything really. I think I`m generally just a pop culture geek, with a bit of math and science geek thrown in there too. Geek chic is cool nowadays, so it`s all good.

Ooh, contest in how many types of geek you are? Sweet.

Book, politics, academic, computer, internet, tech, Audio, pop culture, music, film, video game, comic, comic book, food, Star wars AND star trek geek and sorta D&D (like the books and video games, don`t like the table top game). Chuck, HIMYM, BBT, Stargate, other tv-series I like, etc. Hell, I`m even a sports geek. And most definitly a gigantic car geek. Huge one. Massive. (That`s what she said)

I have a tendency to obssess over things I like and learn all about it, turning me into a geek over just about anything. But since my interest shifts between stuff, I don`t belong to all geekdoms at the same time.
