It makes me sad to be part of this generation. I realise that some people do spend a helmet-wearingly retarded amount of time using phones, apparently even in their sleep, but I just can`t understand how, or why. *sigh*

Effective in Massachusetts on Oct. 1:

The new MA Distracted Driving Law affects drivers of all ages but takes a particularly tough stance on teens under 18 who text and/o use cell phones while driving. The new law bans any cell phone use while driving by 16 and 17 year old drivers, including the use of a cell phone with hand free features, at any time while driving. Under the new Distracted Driving Law, teen drivers can make calls in an emergency- but are urged to pull over and park first, according to information posted on the MA State Government website.

Under new law, police will be able to pull over any driver suspected of using a mobile electronic device for texting or accessing the Internet. First time offenders are subject to a $100 fine. Junior operators observed using a cell phone can also be cited and subject to a $100 fine and the loss of their license for 60 days. Teen offenders will also be required to take a driver retraining course through the National

I hate the damn things. These "toys" get more attention than someone sitting right across from you. I`ve had teens answer a text while interviewing for a job! Jesus, put it down for a bit!

@BigMordecai
thats exactly what hes saying. that bcuz 70 yr olds can drive even tho they are just as bad as texting drivers means that they should be banned from driving. if they drive that badly but its still legal than texting while driving shouldnt be such a big deal. BASED on these statistics. only a retard would honestly say that texting + driving = okay

how can 24% of 17s have sexted while only 20% of 18s have? does that mean that a bunch of the 17yr old sexters DIED? what the FCK is wrong with statistics these days. this is henceforth complete BS. every fact is void. i love how this always happens on IAB posts haha.. whatever. at least im not bored anymore.

CA does in fact have laws about texting while driving.. they just pile texting and voice into one law called the hands free law. You can do whatever on your cell as long as your hands are free to drive.

@Roomster39 I hope your trolling because you ignored that 20x more likely to crash thing. I hate ppl who text and drive.
This constant obsession with phones has proven problematic in Japan where cell phone addiction has been studied and shown a major problem. Put down your phones and think freely your mind independent of the thoughts and lives of others.

"Studies show that texting while driving slows down reaction time to that of a 70 year old."
This can mean one of two things:
1) 70 year olds and over need to be banned from driving.
or
2) Texting while driving isn`t too bad of a thing.

@Steelgrid I have a cellphone. I don`t text. And texting is marked up, you pay about 300+ times the cost of sending the text, to send a text. Which is considerable mark up.

"I have never sent a text message... it`s hilariously marked up."

Just because you cant afford a cell phone doesnnt mean this is marked up. This is actually undermarked if anything. You cannot go anywhere without seeing a KID on a cellphone texting someone. This is rather astounding considering as a child I had to ask to use the phone and wasnt allowed to answer it.

Cell phones have helped, alot. But as far as youth having these I am not much in agreeance with it. If I were to give my daughter a phone, at her age, I would definatly be restricing numbers and call to those I have met. You know, kinda like the restrictions on sleepovers?

"I think everyone would agree that a longer limit would be better, even if you don`t use it..."

Phones have been capable of stringing two or more messages together to make one large one for some time now. The message gets split into 160 character chunks and reassembled on the receiving phone. It`s no longer a problem.

And texting while eating is ok, but not if you`re eating out with friends.

Texting is awesome, because I hate talking on the phone. I would rather get a short, fast message from someone rather than pretend I want to talk to them for a couple minutes.

exactly @lostinkorea !

I`ve sent around 20 text messages in the past year, and that is counting I consider text messages a way more convenient form of information through cellphones than a phonecall (that is, I`ve used around 10 min of phonecalls in the previous year).

Instant messaging and email, specially now that internet is pretty much everywhere, is a much better form of communication. I`d count IM`s and emails in hundreds or even thousands a month.

This most be somewhat old in updating. #12 States that don`t ban had Hawaii listed. Effective 01/01/2010 it became illegal to operate any electronic device while driving. That includes talking on the cell or text. Working your laptop or using your portable players such as iPods. Tickets are $192.00 first offense. Trust me I know firsthand out of pocket 01/03/2010.

A text massage is that app the ladies use that makes their phone vibrate. Well, I guess that was sexist, I`m sure there are guys out there who use it also.

I find it humorous that we went from letters to the amazement of being able to talk long distances, and now we are back to sending letters again.

I`m all for texting. After my two years of call center hell, I would be happy to never have to talk on the phone again.

text usage when you date a freshman: 5283/mo and you go over your unlimited plan because its unlimited only to Verizon users and +5000 non Verizon texts.

The average needs to be taken with a grain of salt. It doesn`t mean that every teen texts 10 times an hour. There are probably plenty of teens that go under that, with the obsessive texters going way over. I personally text maybe 2-4 times a day unless I am having a conversation. My GF texts 5-10 times an hour though, lol...

@razordragon unlimited text messaging for 5 or 10 bucks isn`t that bad....if you wanted to send 1,000,000 texts during the month than that`s fine. that`s not much of a markup.

Why call and spend a minute on the phone when you have limited daytime minutes when you can send a text which in most circumstances is unlimited. (From my experience, most people just opt for unlimited messaging packages)

I guess it`s in vogue to talk badly about texting here on IAB. I`ll admit, I`d rather text before I actually call someone. Most reasons to contact people for me can be summed up in a text or 2 and I don`t need to get pulled into 30+ minute conversations. When I`m in the mood for it I`ll call.

Some of this sounded off. 95% of young adults text message? Hard to believe there isn`t a greater percentage of those who don`t even have a cell phone.
I`ve received text messages, they`re never worth replying to. Texting is a waste of money. Pick up to phone and talk, or leave a VOICE message, or call them back later.
