Sometime around 1980 I took a college course on the Future. We had to do a project about something that would happen in about 2020 I think was the target date. It always irked me that a guy that did a piece on "space ball" got a better grade than my piece on Phillip Morris marijuana. The more outrageous the prediction in a closer timeline is the trend in future predictions.

There is a bit more in the Mayan calendar to Dec 21, 2010 (yes 21, not 12 or 13). It`s not just a year change. The changes are only every 26,000 years and they signal a new type of world. Not an end of world, but a drat lot more than just a new year.

The internet was started in 1957, but the concept had been thought out well before then. Even if they hadn`t thought that far into it, it`s not surprising that someone had that specific concept about the internet.

December 13, 2012 is a "new age" of the Mayan calendar, nothing new, nothing spectacular, just another "new year" of an almost forgotten calendar. Which I`ve heard is significantly more accurate than our own.

How about the ones that DID come true? Philip K. Dick wrote in the 1950`s about everyone having a terminal in their home through which they could access any information that is publicly available and also buy anything that can be purchased, deducting money directly from their bank account.

If anyone is interested, there is a documentary on the History Channel (wait, maybe it`s the Science Channel) that calls Jules Verne and HG Wells "prophets" and how their science based novel predictions have come true. Apparently Wells died a bitter old man because no one paid heed to his warnings. He wanted him tombstone to say "I told you so, you damn fools"

We also haven`t created an electromagnetic shield to cover the planet and protect it from the Sun’s radiation, after the ozone layer completely failed, as seen in Highlander 2.

@DuckBoy87: We do have a fuel that comes from garbage. Both ethanol and methane can be derived from garbage and be used to fuel cars.

Let`s count books too, so we can have 1984 on the list.

Although actually, Big Brother and Room 101 are both real things now.

Hmmm...IIRC In 1997 Manhattan island is supposed to be a maximum security prison already sans "Escape from New York".

Also Los Angeles is supposed to be flattened, and split off from the mainland in Aug 23, 2000, and become a maximum prison also according to "Escape from LA".

Maybe we could get Washington D.C. turned into another one with Snake Plissken as the president.

@TwoEyezBlind: 2001 isn`t supposed to be an action-packed movie. It`s all about evolution and human achievement. The first half of the movie is about the wonders that mankind has achieved, while the end of the movie is about mankind evolving to something greater. I think it`s a beautiful movie. :)

LMAO! I forgot that one @Gerry1!
Luckily, Science fiction is just fiction, I`d hate to see some of the `realities` protrayed in many SF stories...

World War 3 was in the 2060s. You`re thinking about the Eugenics wars.

Up next... Back to the Future Part II! The professor will be arriving at some point in 2015, and we will have a fuel that comes from garbage, and flying cars.

@OldOllie 1984 was written in 1948, after Stalin, Mussolini, and Hitler had all come to power. It wasn`t really attempting to predict much, more to warn us of what can happen to humanity if we don`t prevent another superpowerful totalitarian regime to come into existence. If you think that the current world is very similar to 1984, you probably didn`t even read the sparknotes.

2001 has to be the most boring movie I had ever seen in my life. No talking whatsoever in the fist half hour and the last half hour of the movie. WTF? BUT! The movies old as hell and is still regarded as the most realistic space movie to date.

@sophia_Well, I`m a grant writer for non-profit organizations and burgeoning engineers. I like long walks along the non-existent beach in my area and the sound of children`s laughter in Spring...I also have this weird thing for drag queens, a deep fear of commitment and a strange rash.

Now it`s your turn
