And either way, it is impossible for god to be omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent, as is so commonly preached. It boils down to the problem of evil.
If God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent, then how is there evil in the world?

I could be wrong here, but isn`t it some sort of blasphemy to claim to know the nature of god?

omnipotence doesn`t necessarily entail being able to do everything. there are lots of things God can`t do and still be omnipotent. God can`t sin. God cannot cease to exist. God cannot be imperfect. Basically, God cannot do anything contrary to his nature. You would expect something like God to be consistent in this manner. So when you say if God can create an immovable object, it`s an incoherent objection. Its saying well a perfect being could be not perfect. it just doesn`t make any sense to say something like that. so its not a refutation of any kind.

but i don`t see how you could say there is no God when there are jugs like that. If there is no God, then there is no beauty. But these are amazing. therefore, God exists.

@Disco, Konoer, if a being is omnipotent, he should be able to do anything, right? Shouldn`t that also include being able to create anything? (There`s even biblical precedent for that - god apparently created a ton of water and flooded the world.) An immovable object should then fall under the category of "things" and thus "things an omnipotent being could create". But an omnipotent being should be able to move any object. Thus the flaw of omnipotence, and why I believe it doesn`t exist.

@BigMordecai
Your proof (although I wouldn`t call anything either of us has said proofs, they only exist in maths) relies on your assertion that it is impossible to convey meaning through human language for every situation. You do not demonstrate that this is the case.
You also fail to demonstrate that an incomplete language would inevitably result in directly contradicting answers to the same question.

Further, your assertion that God could not do something (here, accurately convey his moral code) is nonsensical. By definition, God is omnipotent. There is nothing he cannot do. Language would be no impediment to an omnipotent being. Hell, he could just hardwire the moral code into our brains.

So no, the argument is not moot. Your fundamental assumptions are flawed.

I gave a proof showing your point is moot and simultaneously everyone who argues with you.
You are using a proof by contradiction (though it is not very rigorous), assuming that a correct religion is defined by an ultimate morality which is consistent. I defined it following some arguments of everyone`s and a very very general definition for rigor. Every situation/question possible has a right or wrong answer. What I forgot to write was that there is more than one answer or possible action, ie morality does not give the trivial answer set only of having no permutations. Your proof of contradiction by having two inconsistent -written- or communicated statements is moot by the fact that my proof shows that any lingual expression of an ultimate morality as defined using fundamental assumptions, must have a lingual contradiction so your point carries no meaning.
It is impossible to stay true to old testament laws.
It obviously isn`t. The Pharisees did it just fine.

Besides, it`s equally impossible to stay true to Jesus` new covenant too. Thinking someone other than your wife is attractive is adultery? It seems thoughtcrime wasn`t invented by Orwell after all.

And why would a loving God create a ruleset that is impossible for the subjects of that ruleset to follow? That would be like a human demanding that their pet dog either write out the proof of Pythagoras` Theorem from first principles, or continually seek forgiveness for not being able to do so.
Romans 10:4 along with Ephesians 2:15 support that.
Then tell me, why did Jesus himself say to obey the least of the commandments? Why did say to be more righteous than a Pharisee, who showed their righteousness by following all those laws?

It is impossible to stay true to old testament laws. Humans are flawed and fall short of it constantly, hence the need in Jewish tradition for cleansing and sacrifice in order to be made pure again. The laws show the human need for redemption. Romans 10:4 along with Ephesians 2:15 support that. Just as Jesus is the Word, he is the law himself. The purpose of the laws was to lead to Christ as is said in Galatians 3:24 "So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith".
Jesus fulfilled the OT when he died on the cross.
Fair enough, that could be the "till all is fulfilled" part. But in that sentence Jesus (confusingly) cites two very different `end conditions` if you will.
"Till all is fulfilled", OK I can see how the dying-for-our-sins thing could be that.
"Till heaven and earth pass" has clearly not happened. We`re still here, on Earth. And I`m assured that heaven is still there too.

How do the two different end conditions interact? What logic function do we apply? Is it an OR or an AND? Jesus never makes that clear.

Also, the Bible says (1 Peter 1:24-25) "The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever."

But how can the word of God endure forever if, as you point out, Jesus (= God = Holy Spirit) changes the rules?

All that means is that the word of God stands temporarily, until he changes his m

Jesus fulfilled the OT when he died on the cross. Jesus did change the law, and the rest of Matthew 5 shows that.

The trinity existed before Jesus was born, The Father, The Word, and The Spirit. It says in the bible that Jesus was `The Word` made flesh, Therefore Jesus is the law.

Jesus later says `No one comes to the father but by me`. In Matthew 5 he is laying the foundation of the soon-to-be new covenant, He simplifies the law. He then fulfills the law with his sacrifice.

Get it ?

I argue that ultimate morality must contradict itself in the strictest sense but not in a hypothetical sense. The language usage however is not strict which must be understood. This brings up the interesting situation of interpretation, while old wisdom should not be thrown away, maybe they can be edited in some places. Maybe it meant his rules don`t stand on its own. I dont care that much. Two primary points are true: it is highly interpretable so the meaning becomes a reflection of the person and social forces. This is freedom of thought.
Now to support my previous statement. Languages and interpretations and human reasoning are limited (not complete). An ultimate morality must provide an answer to every question which is in every case correct. Assuming it exists (right and wrong), there exists some question which must due to limited language cannot be expressed differently and thus two answers may exist for the same answer. Therefore morality is contradi

The best you could POSSIBLY say is that Jesus immediately contradicts himself by giving instructions that disagree with a few of the OT laws. But that`s hardly an encouraging line of argument, Jesus giving confusing, poorly explained instructions on moral issues. Some poor schmuck might pick the wrong interpretation and condemn themselves to hell!

Can an ultimate source of morality contradict itself?

Because I didn`t have room, and you can`t quote and link in the same post.

Please explain how Matthew 5:17-18 could possibly be interpreted as Jesus saying anything other than "Don`t think the old laws are written off, because they`re not, not until heaven and earth pass".

And when I read Matthew 5:19, I again see Jesus saying "if you break these small commandments you will be called least to heaven, but if you follow them you`ll get in". Again, telling me to obey the least commandments of the law and the prophets he just mentioned.

And again, Matthew 5:20, he tells me to be as righteous as a Pharisee, who were the people who strictly followed all 400+ rules in the OT. I have to be even more rigidly adherent than the most rigidly adherent believers.

Incorrect. Read Leviticus 18:1 - "And the Lord spake unto Moses".

All the commands in Leviticus 18 are direct commands from God. God gave them to Moses, and Moses told them to everyone else. Just like he did with the 10 Commandments.

You`ll notice that the same thing comes up throughout Leviticus, for example Leviticus 19:1 shows that the instructions are clearly coming from God, who then says in Lev 19:19 not to wear clothes from two types of material.

They are ALL commands direct from God.

Matthew 5:17-18 - "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled."

That`s Jesus himself saying that he is not abolishing the OT laws.

1. I never said anything about anyone burning in hell. Not once did I attack anyone on this site. You assumed from my post that I was Christian and therefore jumped to the false conclusion that I must be here to judge everyone and condemn them.
2. I`m not trying to make myself "look better". Just as you used quotes from the Bible to prove your point, I am pointing out how Christians are commanded to follow Christ and are not restricted to the law.

There are verses for you! Want to stick your holy d*ck into the lives of others and claim they`re gonna burn forever because of the OT laws? There are verses for you!

The Old Testament laws were created by man, with the exception of the Ten Commandments. Then Jesus came and made sure they knew that, shortening the Ten into two; love G-d and love your neighbor. Being gay is not technically ever addressed by G-d Himself, or Jesus, so saying that it`s a sin to be gay is like saying it`s also a sin to wear fabrics (Leviticus 19:19). Which neither is, by the way, just so you get the point.
