Lol, the kid who smiled at 1:07 after Oliver said chicken breast. Yeah, these videos are set-up. The shock factor is more popular than if it had worked, and obviously this is the response he wanted. Smart-aleck kids make for many viewers (see AFV).

just because it is not the best thing for you, it does not mean you can`t or shouldnt eat it at all...

i wonder how many people in this thread who are saying that eating these types of foods is going to kill our kids, while still giving their own kid chocolate, kool-aid, and other snacks and juices?

Yeah, but if you put it like that, a maggot or a rat have nutritional value. Yum.

tincel: It`s part of a UK series called `Jamie`s American...something or other, I forget, where he went to Huntingdon (forget what state) which is the fattest most obese place in the world or something, and tries to change their attitudes towards food but is met by a lot of shocking stuff like this, and people with bad attitudes etc.

All these people saying "it`s all chicken, the carcass has nutritional value". Remind me never to come to your house for dinner.

"What are we having?"
"Steak."
"Um... this is a hoof."
"Well, it`s all still cow. It must have some nutritional value, right? At least I`m using all the parts I can instead of just wasting it."

Use the whole carcass, yes. Use the whole carcass for human sustenance, no.

NoArms5534 - It`s because society seems to think that adding lots of additives to food is bad for some reason, despite the fact that we`ve got no evidence to prove this. If it WAS bad, they wouldn`t legally be allowed in food.

I would still eat it as well.

Using everything you can from a chicken carcass = bad? I though that the Native Americans using everything from the buffaloes was the best example of how they are awesome and white people suck?

Yeah, it`s gross. But it IS food, and they`re not being wasteful. If it weren`t for the preservatives and whatnot, who cares? Get off your high horse and get me some McNuggets!

For those who say this is a fail on Jamie Oliver.. I see it as a fail on our society as it shows that we`ve completely desensitized our kids into eating things which are brutally bad for them. If these kids were to continue eating like this for the remainder of their lives, they`ve be staring death in the face by 25.

And here is another example of someone who is ill informed on processed food. While the carcass has a lot of nutrients in itself, it is the stabilizers, fats and chemicals that make it bad for you. Because the carcass is a substandard ingredient, they have to manipulate it in order to make it palatable. So what do they do? They add massive amounts of sodium and use fat as a way to induce flavor. They then add refined starches to stabilize the mix which then nukes your systems

@Ogen: Chinese food is disgusting. They eat dogs, cats, snakes, brains, testicles, and all sorts of non-kosher parts including drinking cups of blood. Chinese food in the US is not like this at all. Yes, processed food is gross, but for entirely different reasons.

As I remember, he is from England. He is a wildly successful nutritionist/chef who got his own show there (which ultimately failed) so he ended up in the US with his own show (which ultimately did/is fail(ing)).

What he is trying to teach is not a problem.. it is (as shown in this clip) not the right approach to relate health and nutrition to Americans.

People who are advocating that kids eat the healthier cuts of the meat aren`t saying throw the rest of it away, so talk of waste doesn`t make any sense. They are just saying the kids shouldn`t be eating it, it`s still feed for hog feed, dog food, the local zoo, etc.

The problem is the amount of processing that goes in to food like that to make it edible. If I mix up a pile of feces with enough ingredients to make it taste good, would you eat it? You could argue there was *SOME* nutritional value, but that doesn`t make it ok.

Chicken stock is boiling the chicken scraps to produce a broth, you aren`t eating said scraps.

The point he was making with the series was that it is unnecessary to eat processed hydrogenated crap, when making a meal with fresh ingredients was not more difficult and only slightly more expensive. Fresh is better and healthier. Maybe you get some protein from the scraps, but is it the same as the breast?

That cook has the mentality of a 4 year old that doesn`t eat food because it "looks gross". The carcass has to have SOME nutritional value, am I right? It`s not like they are ingesting poison or anything. It`s like condemning chocolate bars as "bad" because if you eat too much, you`re probably not helping your health. @rook187 The fact that you just fed your child something from McDonald`s leads me to believe you aren`t a good judge of other`s intelligence.

But where exactly did he say nuggets aren`t made that way in America? And he might be right, because there is another step in order to make that meat paste, they have to soak the whole batch in ammonia to wash it off, because it is so disease ridden that they can`t serve it how it is.

In this case, he didn`t have to do that because he made this paste out of a chicken that wasn`t killed and processed in a butcher factory.

reality it that chicken was killed to eat, why waste it. If you make chicken stock, you use the carcass. It`s all perception, trying to say "eww..it`s chicken skin" but on cooking shows they cook chicken with the skin on.. you could have kids eating chicken brains all day if you put in a box with a cartoon character on it.

Well, sure, they EXIST in those places. But McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, etc are purely American inventions. Hey, I had sushi for lunch today in Canada (damn good it was too) because I fancied a bit of Japanese food. Does that mean that Canadian eating habits are identical to Japan`s? I would suggest the negatory.

If you notice, over half of the kids that raised their hands only did so when they saw that they others raised theirs. The only thing that this experiment proved was that kids have a need to "fit-in" and conform. Put it in front of them and try an make them eat it, I`m pretty sure that none of them would.

This doesn`t say much other than kids follow a group mentality.

I think its worth having the kids isolated if you`re going to consider changing their minds about things like this. I like how at first one enthusiastic kid goes "AWESOME!" when he sees the soft pink gunk, then presumably the same kid raises their hand first after hesitating. Then all the other kids follow suit.

I didn`t see him add any chemicals to that chicken. Neither did the American kids who he prepared it right in front their eyes. All he did was grind up what remained of the chicken. If he added chemicals, the good cuts would have it too.

people who are saying its just not wasting food, your missing the point. did you need see all the random chemicals he had to add to make that thing edible? also sure, we Brits eat some junk food, just when the British kids went through the same process, they went "ewww no way" and refused to eat it, where as the American kids didn`t, that`s the point

"That experiment failed. That experiment always works."

Sounds like Jamie doesn`t know how to do an experiment. Experiments can`t really fail unless they give no useful data. Just because the outcome wasn`t what he wanted it to be doesn`t mean it "fails" by any means.

Blood pudding anyone?

I don`t think his issue is with them eating the scraps, that`s still chicken after all. It`s the stabilisers/preservatives/flavouring etc. that`s mixed with it which make it worse than the meat.

Indeed what is wrong with using up 90% of an animal you have killed instead of the 60% that is normally used.
I am not an animal rights activist or a vegetarian but it pains me to see that people can throw away meat without blinking their eyes.

And I can`t understand what Jamie Oliver is whining about. The English kitchen is full of recipes that contain organs or intestine.
Ever wondered what Haggis is made from? (in all fairness it`s not an English dish but Schottish)

OMG NOT CHICKEN SKIN! OH THE HUMANITY (chickanity?)!!

Seriously, all that gets through is the meat and the skin, you think chickens fill that part with poison or something? That`s just not being wasteful, animals eat all those parts all the time.

If he wants them to say they won`t eat it, he shouldn`t say things like "I`m going to show you how to make food out of this" and "Lovely".

Basically he`s a prick. The only real issue is the additives which as a chef you would think he could manage to substitute with healthy and better tasting ones.

I see this problem in my line of work. It`s a cultural difference. You can`t always apply what works or doesn`t work in one culture to another. I remember a professor in college doing an experiment where he auctioned off one dollar bills to us. Some of them went for as much as $5 or $10. He told us he`s had CEOs pay over $1,000 for a $1 bill just so they could win. All this in America. He went to Japan and tried the same thing. Without talking to each other, they each bid (the equivalent of) 1 cent. His experiment, which always worked, failed, because of cultural differences.

I swear, I`m not trolling. But the reason the fat-lipped twat was shocked at the end (that the kids would still eat it) was that it was the first time he had tried the experiment on American kids. His point was that every time he tried this experiment previously (back in Blighty) the kids would refuse to eat it.
