1.This video is OLD.
2. The force at work here is neither centripetal, nor centrifugal. It is simple momentum that carries the SLS through the tunnel.

That was a lot of buildup for a whole lot of fake.

It has to be fake. Looks like a cool car though.

This is old news. And fake. It`s just a viral video to publicise the awesome new SLS AMG. It does not make enough downforce for its bulky weight. This could not happen. Stop denying it.

gcghost, if you know SOOOO much about physics then you should know that centrifugal force is not actually a force. now please stfu and gtfo.

not fake... Mercedes is a big enough company to hire the engineers and physicists and what not to make this actually happen. Also, big enough to know that faking something like this would cause major backlash. sweet car, good job mercedes for proving you don`t need mcclaren.

@zobgib.

Please, learn some physics. A skateboarder weighs MUCH less than a car and can get enough speed to only need CENTRIFUGAL force to perform a loop that they head straight into. The car would need significant downforce to do it as they *ahem* "showed" here. This is clearly fake but on Top Gear they actually did perform a loop like this is a smalll underground tunnel.

even if it`s fake, that`s still one bad a$$ car

too long.
too much build up
then FLASH it`s over with no replay

this was like breaking off in mid-pee. Left me feeling unsatisfied.

Fake or not its still a very cool concept.

Down force is not important, down force would matter for if you wanting to drive continuisouly upside down. Looping around a tunnel takes advantage of centripetal force to stay on the walls. That;s why a skateboarder could do the same thing.

Stop advertising to me IAB. I ain`t ever gonna buy a Merc. Even if I did, I wouldn`t do that with it.

it doesnt even have a rear wing...

bullpoo. that car has nowhere near the amount of downforce required to pull such a stunt. the only car I know of that is supposed to be able to do this in theory is the Saleen S7

Pretty cool ad

Right, that ad is a load of crap. Although it is possible to do that in a car, that one is not capable of achieving the speeds necessary nor does it have enough down force. There is a Super car that has both the top speed necessary and down force required to drive on the roof of a tunnel like that but no one has tried it and I cant remember the name of the car. To that advert I call BS.

Looks dodgy to me... Top Gear did a real one, in the sewers beneath my home city of Belfast, of all places...

@Kaagan: downforce isn`t as much of a factor, people have done loops on bikes, skateboards, etc, and what downforce do they have? think momentum.

Funny thing, the blog explained it just like I was thinking.

They say people don`t take stuff like physics too seriously in the US (in high school), so yeah, I guess most people wouldn`t really know that.

Good thing people here does, and I love it.
Physics rule. Literally.

bs, not enough downforce. if someone was to attempt this in a car it`ll look more like a bullet and spin the car

it is real. the stretch of highway that the ad was filmed in is Fraser Canyon, British Columbia in Canada. the tunnel is the China Bar Tunnel on Highway 1 just North of Spuzzum

Erm ive seen this but with M. Schumacher: Mercedes/AMG claim its real(And Schumacher drove) but the timeline is messed. THe time this was shot,Schumacher was in Ferrari. I doubt he would betray Ferrari for an ad.

I think it can be done. But they did not - there is plenty of footage and stills on the web providing significant evidence that this was faked.

Like explained before, this is very possible. The only problem I see with it happening in this commercial is the fact that the angle between the wall and the road is a near 90degree angle, which would make it pretty tough to get the car on to the wall.

it actually pretty obtainable, all you need to do is match the force of gravity exerted on the by force centrifugal, in a nut shell and very dumbed down force gravity= velocity squared over the radius of the tunnel.I know there are some very things missing to this argument, but you get the general idea

Could happen, in my opinion. You would have to have a pretty strong force from the air on the car pushing it into the wall of the tunnel.

"thank you top gear" he might have pulled it off if he was going faster. 17.5 meters per second is more like 39.1 miles per hour.

@zeebeedee

give me a detailed scientific explanation as to why this commercial is fake, and i may be inclined to believe that it is fake, but i think its possible to do this stunt as long as you maintain a high enough speed..

I know that an indycar going around 200mph could theoretically do this due to its extreme down-force, but a Mercedes? I think physics would win.
