I hear they are being offered book deals for their trials... I went downtown today and survived- where`s my million bucks!?!?

Absolutely astounding. I watched most of the rescue, had to get a few hours sleep of course! Each time they brought another miner up was like the first time and yes, I misted up a bit. Such a touching, happy, joyful story - so thankful they made it out ok.
This is one case where I hope they milk it for all it`s worth. These 33 men deserve compensation - as much of it as they can get. To survive 17 days before being found, and the next 2 months without going insane is just truly inspiring.

Can`t imagine being in their position, being trapped underground for that long of a time, not sure if you`ll live or die. Then coming up to the surface seeing loved ones. This kind of thing makes me so joyous to see.

This has been very uplifting to watch this today. At the worst of times we finally show our true colours.

Also, would love Cigar Guy to be around for every picture from this with his crazy eyes-good times.

"I think we should celebrate each back in the light with a beer. "

I like this idea, except I think its unfair to dedicate just one beer to 33 people, the deserve a beer each, 33 in total. I`m off to pay tribute :-D

@RVIsh: Though in my profession technology is mostly outdated after a few years, I am aware that "modern-day" may refer to a historical epoch starting in the 15th century or to everything since we climbed down the trees as well.

However, I am not considering this excellent piece of hard work or the world`s emphatic reaction to it a "miracle", as both can be explained rationally. And as I mentioned, there are plenty of precedences for what`s going on, except for the duration of these men`s captivity.

YMMV

@Rick:

Those were to determine who was getting the next regular paycheck.

Kinda like if you quit your job, you got 1 more check comin`, but the company won`t give it to your wife. Has to be you.

That`s what was happening.

"The endorsement deals are cool and all, but I think it`s sick that the company that employs them is not going to pay them for the time they spent trapped in that companies mine."

Weren`t there fights over who would receive the paychecks while there were down there? I thought they were getting paid.

@k-two
You have a particularly narrow grasp of what `modern` is. What, it has to have happened in the last decade to be considered modern? The 60`s spawned birth control and GPS, but when perfectly good technology developed over 20 years ago that still works fine is antiquated? What was that thing they said back in the ancient 70`S? If it ain`t broke, don`t fix it?

davymid: "A true triumph of engineering and science to get these men back."

Yes, once again.

"A modern-day miracle."

Hardly - the rescue device, a "Dahlbusch Bomb", has been developed in 1955 and since then been used successfully all over the world, e.g. in Lengede, Germany, back in 1963 to rescue 11 miners after more than two weeks.

Even the media coverage was similar. More than 500 reporters gathered in Lengede for live coverage on radio as well as press reports and TV recordings - before the two of us were even born.

I`ll have a drink on all the supporters as soon as the last man is out.

Sorry if I caused offence Sigma, just how I roll. I don`t do "snarky" though. On the other hand, I do "capricious" very well. Could be my middle name.

Anyways, back on topic. What about them miners!

Wow davymid. Sorry someone had an alternative point of view from yourself. I shall try to only post davymid-approved comments from now on. So sorry. How dare I think that the news reporters were absurd going into detail about trivial things such as lights while miners were being rescued. I mean, the lights were lighting and everything. So glad you got so much snark out of your system on me though. Have a great night.
I watched until CNN coverage went to the BBC and then I had to turn it off. Their commentary is just absolutely idiotic. They just talk and talk and talk and talk... about nothing. "There are lights... lighting the area..."
Interesting Sigma. How would you suggest they cover 33 hours of one man after another coming out of the earth, one every hour? I`d be delighted to hear how`d you`d liven things up. Maybe a small stand-up comedy routine? A mud-wrestling match between the miners` wives while they`re waiting? Or maybe a "Chilean Miners Got Talent", whereby viewers vote on who should be the next one out. Sorry this wasn`t entertaining enough for you.

From MSNBC: They are being offered endorsement deals on everything from beer to sex/herbal products. Also, they made an agreement to never talk about the first 17 days they were trapped. And they have all been offered $20,000 for their first interview, more than they make in a year.
So happy for them.

A true triumph of engineering and science to get these men back. A modern-day miracle. It`s especially heartening to see all the world`s nations rallying round to help the few - engineers from Canada, the US, the UK, France, the winch itself is from Germany. Not not mention the vast fortitude of the Chileans themselves (Bravo to you guys), and of the government of Chile to make sure these guys got back to their families. Keep reeling `em in, boys.

Gleeballs? Seriously? They have had cameras down there all along, they even continually switch to the camera down below that is with the miners and shows them being loaded into the capsule before they begin their journey up.
Smh...

They`ve been interviewing my Dad all day today here in Australia, in regards to his rescue with the Beaconsfield Gold Mine Incident, even had a few reporters trying to interview me :P
The technology has improved greatly since then, I`m very happy to see such positive results in such a short time-frame :D

Thanks for the post. I don`t watch TV so haven`t seen any coverage of this "made for TV event". I worked in two different mines when I was a young man (about three years, total) and this brings back a lot of memories.

Imagine what the hell must be going on with those poor guys, emotionally. They thought they were dead, their families thought they were dead for the first 20 days or so. And what, some 70 days spent underground in total. And now getting the chance to hold their wives, their children again? Can`t wait to read some of the books that come out of this.

Human ingenuity and compassion overcoming adversity. This is what life is all about. Epic story.
