in reality, a 40% mark up isnt all that bad. it is worse than that when you eat out most of the time.

Yeah, I typically just buy a bottle of water for the bottle. I`ll drink and refill until I lose the bottle or it, after, a few months, smells a bit odd.

Movie popcorn is *almost* worth it though. You can`t buy popcorn in the store that tastes quite like movie popcorn with the oil and such (if you can, let me know what it is, because I`d love it).

Serious fail. I pay less than a penny each for text messages when I average the monthly cost by how many I send (5 bucks a month, I send about 500) so I don`t know where they get 20 cents. And who buys bottled water instead of filling a bottle at home, who buys movie theater popcorn, who buys brand-name anything, who on earth opens the hotel mini-bar unless it is paid for on an expense account. This list is a bunch of crap.

madest, just do not send or receive text messages for a single month. Drop demand and prices will plummet. I had ALL texting removed from my phone (my plan says unlimited) just because I was tired of all the stupid crap I was getting every day! I do not miss them even a little.

That`s so true about the veggie tray. I buy at least on or two a month and it`s such a rip off at kroger. It`s like 12.99 for the regular and 15.99 for the organic. but the baby tomatoes are so good.

But I definitely do not agree about the bottled water. I live in Louisville and the water taste like metal from tap, plus if you buy the store brand it`s not that much.

Knew most of these, but interesting nonetheless. I don`t know of many people that don`t pay the $5 a month extra for unlimited texting though which means it is drastically cheaper. Also, who rents hotel room movies in the first place?

Interesting list, to be sure, but the only one I actually buy is name-brand drugs, and that`s only on prescriptions which are not available as generics yet. Last month, buying my generic drugs (after insurance) cost me less than five dollars for four prescriptions. But buying Enbrel, the subcutaneous injection for RA, was $50 after insurance, and would have been $2500 each month without insurance.

However, in this instance I consider this acceptable. I would rather pay more money for drugs and actually have them available for purchase than pay little and have fewer available. I just like to think that the high price is going towards finding new drugs for my condition that might actually work.

The reason brand-name drugs cost so much is because the brand names need the money to cover the cost of bringing you a miracle cure and researching new things like how to cure cancer and sh*t. Generic drugs are a leech on the progress of science. Generic manufacturers are just in it for money.

I have bought pre-cut vegetables today! A mix of three different kinds of lettuce with carrot and I tell you that I am cheaper off then buying the three lettuces and a carrot... I also know that it is expensive but I do not need that much lettuce and like the article says, it saves time!

The reason you pay so much for brand names is they take the profits and by the patent on possible cures. Keeping you hooked and dependent on the drug. There is no generic drugs for insulin. With a customer base of about 120 million worldwide using 1 bottle every 30 days insulin users that`s a pretty hefty profit. Without insurance copay one bottle of insulin Humalog cost`s my insurance company $72.00. If the majority are on that pace that`s a nice amount of gross income coming in routinely.

Out of everything on this list, I only get the precut vegetables. Those salad-in-a-bag things are outstanding. As for water, I`ll buy it from the reverse osmosis machines using refillable containers at the grocery store. It`s the same filtering process, has the exact same quality, and costs something like 30 cents a gallon as opposed to over a dollar per pint for Aquafina.

Buying bottled water, in my opinion, is the ultimate waste of money and resources. The stuff inside those bottles is no more pure than the stuff in your tap, and what happens to all those bottles? Find a water fountain or buy a Brita filter and use a glass, people!

"Why aren`t diamonds on the list."

Because the initial cost to GET them includes things like mining the land, processing, and land owners fees... They sometimes also include basic freedoms, human rights, and human life... I`m sure the $2000 pricetag on that diamond ring is surely a mark DOWN against that...
