If he can`t see because no-one bothered to trim his feathers, that would really really piss me off.

Oystah: He was hatched in captivity.

Apparently the mutation also causes blindness.

How could they possibly know he was abandoned at birth because of the way he looks?

@DarkBlitz

Mammals did not evolve from birds. Small rodent-like mammals existed when the dinos went extinct. The dino`s extinction actually allowed these mammals to expand and diversify into what we have today.

However, some small dinosaurs did survive the extinction -- they had feathers and, ultimately, evolved into birds.

I`ve read about these before, it`s called the feather-duster mutation. While you may think he looks cute, you can guarantee he is absolutely miserable. They can`t climb, preen or fly like other budgies, and can hardly make any noise either. They rarely live longer than 5 months. The poor little thing :(

@Darkblitz9: I don`t think I`ve ever read anything suggesting land animals have an evolutionary branch from birds...

Well, if you look at it in terms of evolution (for those of who who don`t believe, stop reading) this mutation could have been similar to the one that occurred millions of years ago to change the first feathers into fur or vice versa. just something to think about.

he was abandoned at birth? not being familiar with birds i would hope he wasn`t abandoned by his human `parents`. although that wouldn`t surprise me as humans can be so mother-loving stupid at times. just imagine being the owner of the first of a potential new subspecies of parakeet..... mind-boggling......

According to his Wikipedia page, he is apparently blind, and has short, flightless wings, in addition to the obvious feather issues. The article says his odd vocalizations may be a result of the mutation or may be the result of the early separation from his species, but as it is quite common for pet birds to be separated from their parents shortly after *hatching* (not birth, as this video for some reason stated) and raised solely by humans, I personally doubt it`s the latter reason. I could wish it was so easy to get them to make that sound, because his little squeaks were adorable.

And, Fatninja01, considering he`s blind, I don`t think we can expect him to pass on his mutation, so it can`t be evolutionary progression.

I love him... they really need to start breeding him out to start a new sub breed of parakeet... it is absolutely adorable, and with the lack of flight due to the wing feathers being like that also... would be far less worry about it getting out and away. I vote to breed it into a population of them

Curly feathers? How interesting. He seems really well trained too, which is a surprising thing for most birds.

Damshek: It`s actually the opposite of natural selection. If left abandoned in the wild, it would have died (natural selection) but since it was rescued by this nice lady, it lived... making it unnatural selection.

back in 1995, thousands of birds like Whipper had to be put down because they couldn`t find loving homes.

I doubt he can fly, so basically abandoning him is exactly what would have happened in nature.

That said... He looks like a hilarious conversation starter.
