"Yeah for all you people laughing out there, think of the poor guy`s wife and kids. Just because he was rich and on a segway doesn`t make the loss of life any less sobering or any more humorous..."

I feel very sad for his family, my thoughts are with them in their time of grief. From what I`ve read it seems he was a genuinely good man.

That being said, if I were the owner of Segway and was killed by driving my Segway off a cliff... I would sincerely hope that people could have a laugh about it.

Its not really ironic, If he owned the company he probably had tons of segways and also used them a lot meaning he had a lot bigger chance to die by segway.

WTF!? down at the bottom, it was advertising me to buy a segway.

Well Trojan everyone is entitled to their opinion.

And the callousness of the people on this board never surprises me. Let`s just hope that you can make 1/10th of the impact on the world that this man did.

Or instead we can laugh about the fact this even in his death the man lived more than most of you who are laughing about it will in your entirety.

Gorg, you are right about one thing, Segways are pretty stupid. Also this is not the man who invented the Segway, he only bought the company about a year ago.

It`s ironic because he OWNS that company, eh? And says how safe they are, then he dies apparently while riding one.
Ironic, but in that sad way.

I like how a direct link to the Huffington Post gets approved, But a direct link to the Daily Mail usually won`t. In this case, Huff Po was taking the story directly from the Daily Mail, So why not link directly to the main source ? I mean WTH ?

"The liberal agenda is strong with this one."

I laughed hard when I read this. Then I read how the guy donated £18 million to charity before and I felt rather guilty :l

Doesn`t make segways any less stupid though.

Sucks that good rich people die while the crappy ones live. If you read the article, this guy had given 23 million to various charities :/

How do you just ride your segway off a cliff? like didn`t he know there was a cliff on his own property?

Yeah for all you people laughing out there, think of the poor guy`s wife and kids. Just because he was rich and on a segway doesn`t make the loss of life any less sobering or any more humorous...

From the Article:
"Heselden was known for his generous philanthropy: he had donated over 23 million GBP to charitable causes over his lifetime."

I think someone who has done that much to try and help has earned a little respect.

Hmmmm... so irony is when the outcome is the opposite of what you`d expect. I would not expect the Segway guy to die in a segway accident. So, yeah, I guess it`s ironic.

Seeing as he was probably driving a Segway around a lot, no, it is not very ironic.

I want to know how the hell you ACCIDENTALLY drive off a cliff on a segway.

That`s a fitting death, not an ironic death... but still a sad to hear.

"Would this be considered ironic?"

Only if one was unsure of the meaning of irony.... otherwise, it would be quite a stretch to get to that conclusion... The fact that he fell while on a Segway would only be ironic if the fall that killed him was due to the segway`s gyro... flipping him around... or something. Actually, it`s hard to get irony out of this, there is no "outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected," as a segway doesn`t float, nor is it designed for flight.
