thats kind of sad and disturbing. it reminds me of when the russians did those messed up experiments where they cut off dogs heads and made them work in situations they shouldnt have worked.......... :(
whatever tho. let em work let em live.

Ah, read the BBC news thing, it`s just a blob of brain cells. They`re doing it to try and find out how memories map out. So it won`t have a dead rat`s memories or anything. The way they keep the brain in a separate place to the robot makes me think of the matrix for some reason o.O

I wanna see the brain that controls it!

I assumed the rat was alive, with some things stuck to it`s head, not that the rat was dead and the brain was literally floating in a jar. It`s drated up- but I think I like it.

Please people, there is no such thing as "Evil" technology (only people can be "evil" not the science). This technology if a little more advanced means that we are one step closer to cyborgs, or on a more realistic scale, replacement robotic limbs. I`m sure 100 years ago there was probably some morons out there believing that artificial limbs were playing with "god`s" will; this is much the same, where it ends, who knows, how it will be used...well that`s what we need to supervise.

*skeptical*
I agree with Tokio, in part. There are chemical jim-jams with high oxygen, breathable liquids and the such, so that`s probs not the issue. I still wanna see the brain before I buy into it though.

Maybe a good test would be to sic a cat on it and see how it reacts? I`d expect a robo-rat to turn to mallets and bowling balls, a la Tom n Jerry.

Very cool and all, but until I see the actual brain in a bell jar with wires sticking out of it, I won`t believe this is true. How can the brain survive for three months without oxygen, for one?

creepy, awesome, abomination... yes, all that and more.

it reminds me of a film clip i saw last week of christine o`donnell stating that a large american company has combined mouse and human DNA, creating a mouse with the mind of a person.... maybe THAT`S why i can`t get a decent job.

"and it`s probably feeling a bit panicked."

I was thinking the exact same thing.

Brain is receiving no input, other than weird computer signals. the rat is therefore, blind, deaf, mute, no sensory, no pain, nothing....but it`s aware. Somehow it receives information telling it there is something ahead....

It`s cool, but I kind of feel sad for the rat. I would love to know what kind of changes take place in the brain over the 3 month period.

"it is not like the brain is actually thinking. the computer just reacts to the neurons."

That makes no sense- when YOU move, all your muscles are doing are reacting to your neurons- that doesn`t mean your brain isn`t thinking. If they`re using a fully functioning rat brain to control this thing, then the brain is thinking as much as any rat does- though it`s getting an increadibly limited amount of sensory input compared to a brain inside a living rat (if this video is even true at all), and it`s probably feeling a bit panicked.

And actually, there are plenty of robots controlled by living tissue- every single remote controlled robot out there is controlled by a human brain, interfacing with the robot via a pair of hands and a joystick or other input device.

If this isn`t a hoax (and let`s face it, there`s nothing in the video to prove that there is actually a brain anywhere) then it is incredible. There`s a lot of knee jerk reactions of fear and disgust in here, please stop. It`s fear like that that is constantly preventing scientific progress and it`s more than worn out it`s welcome.

If you can`t imagine the possibilities that could come from something like this without comparing it to apocalyptic sci-fi movies then you don`t understand it well enough to have a valid opinion.

I`d love to find out that this was genuine.

crakrjak, thats because you have something to have faith in. i have nothing to believe in but the complete loss of everything i am. no thoughts, no emotions, nothingness. its even hard to think about the fact that there is nothing upon death because its nearly impossible to think of yourself as not existing anymore.

Imagine it now, you`re living alone with a dead end supermarket job, you have little career expectancy and no social life, the only people who know you exist are the members of the i-a-b forums. One late evening you`ve come back from your shift only to find that your flat has been broken into. Assuming the worst you go to get your laptop. All of a sudden a bag is forced over your face from behind and you are hit over the head with a club. You awake an unknown time later in a daze, you realise that something is wrong; your limbs feel suddenly weightless and numb, you walk around and hear a buzzing noise as you move. The walls around you are clean and shiny, you move up to one and can see your reflection. You see that you are definitely not human, you are incased in a prison of metal that you can`t feel. In a panic, you head for the nearest door and see inside a group of giants watching you and sitting beside them is a jar with a brain inside, the label has your name on...

I for one hopes this technology advances. Imagine never truly dying, just having your brain being transplanted into a machine and living forever. I fear I will be dead long before such advancement however. Shame, I would much like being immortal.

Holy great mother of god, that`s freaky, and on multiple levels!
First: imagine being killed and then "awaken" in an extremely sensorily limited state, and, completely bewildered, scurry around in a panicky frenzy (by the looks of it).

Also: That`s the brain from a rat who has died. Since science is as science does, they will eventually step this up (if they aren`t stopped, or left unfunded). And by god will I be pooting my pants when bewheeled zombie dogs, cats, and chimps (I dare not think further) potentially roam the streets.

Can it also gold my goulash?
Or silver my salami?
Maybe platinum my pastrami?

This is real. Ive seen something similar, where a rat brain is used to control a flight simulator. Any `bad` actions the robot does are relayed to the brain as a `negative` signal, a bit like a hormone. The brain learns not to go in that direction or to `reverse` when a signal like that is recieved...simple and clever at the same time

Is that... does that mean that the rat dies and promptly (or not so promptly, as the case may be) finds himself a cyborg?
That would be terrifying.

A great leap forward, don`t get me wrong... but terrifying.
