Because their idiot son was so stupid, they"re blaming the teacher for not babysitting him close enough. Or so we think.

Lesson learned, move on.. this kid and his family should get nothing. I feel bad for the teacher, he has to live with the fact that some dumb kid lost him his job.

We did dumb poo like this in school all the time, but we never EVER thought of suing over it because it was our own fault and we knew it.

I had a buddy who was mimicking a bong, and sucked on a coolant tube of a motorcycle engine. It still had some coolant in it and he swallowed a fair amount. He was taken to the hospital, treated, and sent home a day later. Nobody lost their job, nobody sued.. and he learned a good lesson and was ridiculed for about.. oh the rest of his life haha.

Someday when I have children I am going to tell them to go to school and do the stupidest and most dangerous thing they can think of, that way we can make a lot of money! And hey, if my kid gets electrocuted, I can always have another!

If I buy a gun and shoot myself and it hurts should I sue the gunshop owner, the gun manufacturer, or the company that made the bullet? Also, should the gunshop owner quit because of this?
I think the parents need to be neutered. This is almost like suing the makers of the concrete in the sidewalk you hit after jumping off the roof of a skyscraper!

"The New Hampshire Union Leader says Dubois` suit contends he suffered permanent brain damage."

Are we sure that this brain damage wasn`t present before the child`s "accident"?

I was thinking the exact same thing, Zelda. You beat me to it.

The thing that really ticks me off is the parents and whatever lawyer thought this was a good idea to blame someone else for their own failings. The kid failed at reasoning, the parents failed at teaching, and the lawyer is failing at ethical judgement. The only person that did his job is the one that resigned over the whole mess.

Just because no one said anything to them doesn`t mean they have the right to sue. There son should have used this thing most people have called `common sense`. It should have been OBVIOUS you shouldn`t do that -_- His parents better not win. Its their own sons idiot fault.

18 years old.. enough said, there are no excuses for doing this unless you are an idiot. I am sorry but i cant stop laughing. I just feel bad that a teacher had his career stalled because of this dumbo, if anything, the teacher should sue the parents for defamation to get some sort of settlement, i am sure hes suffering financialy due to the storm of negative publicity.

I didn`t go to this school but I live close to it and I have friends who know this idiot. From what I`ve gathered Kyle does stupid things like this all the time. His parents are suing because Kyle claimed the teacher told him he would give him a mountain dew if he did it but other students in the class say that the teacher was having a completely different conversation with another student. Basically, they only people collaborating this kid`s story are his friends who shocked him. The teacher resigned because of the poo storm this incident created unfortunately. It`s been on the news for weeks. Students in the class along with the principle said that there is a safety lesson taught at the beginning of the class. I`m sure it covered "Don`t do stupid poo". His heart really did stop and when the story first aired they thought he might die. He was recovering for a while. Dumbass deserved what he got and I really hope they don`t win the lawsuit.

@duffytoler you`re an idiot, go outside and try that yourself. Won`t die but get a nasty shock, unless u have a pre existing condition.

@Musuko42 you admit you find it confusing but add to the disinformation giving an impression that u cant electrocute ureself with a 12v battery as u cant get past ure skin which is insulation. Human body is a very very good conductor of electricity, there is a reason lightening chooses to go through us when it can.

The only thing this teacher could fall victim to is lack of overwatching students. But realistically cant over watch everyone every second. And he shouldn`t be help responsible for teenagers doing this, if pre-teens yes but not this age group. No one wants to take responsibility anymore its a joke

Male 1,108
@Musuko42, maybe but it`s the amps that kill you. If you think, a slendertone runs on a 9 volt battery and that makes your muscles twitch. A car battery is 12-14 volts but the ampage is about 35A Thats why certain people use them for torture. Anything over a couple of amps is capable of killing you, especially accross the chest. The kid`s lucky to be alive at all.

So I suppose his parents never taught him not to stick a fork or knife in the electrical outlet either, the teacher should counter sue on the basis of the parents not teaching their child common sense.

If that video is the actual event, everyone is laughing and someone is recording it. They knew it was stupid and someone probably put him up to it.

On the plus side, with the electricity already attached, I bet all they had to do to revive him was press the button again. CLEAR!
Erm, yes you can. It`s not the volts that kill you it`s the amps, car betteries have incredibly high ampage
Erm, no you can`t, and I`m tired of hearing that car batteries can kill you, and sick of hearing "It ain`t duh volts, it duh amps!"

Volts isn`t energy, neither is Amps. Volts x Amps is a little closer - that`s power - but still not energy. Energy is Volts x Amps x Time. This is what kills you - energy. Not Volts, not Amps, not Power. A static zap measures out to a hundred thousand volts or more and can give kilowatts of peak power - but the duration is so brief it causes no serious problem.

Ohm`s law: Volts/Resistance = Amps. Tissue resistance there is going to be several hundred kilo-ohms. At 12V, that`s only going to be a few tens of microamps of power, which equates to less than a milliwatt of power. At that low of a power level, it doesn`t matter how long you leave it on, you won`t even feel it - let alone die from it.

"You can`t get a shock of 12V..."

"Erm, yes you can."

He may be making the point that the lower the voltage, the less likely the current is even able to pass through you in the first place.

If I understand it right (and I might not, as it`s all hideously confusing to me), if the voltage is too low, it may not be able to overcome the resistance of the material that`s closed the circuit (in this case, the human body).

By the time a person reaches their teenage years, they have had plenty of time to learn that electricity is dangerous.

I assume the classroom had windows. Should the teacher have instructed the students not to jump through the glass? No, because it`s reasonable to assume that by that age they should be aware of common dangers like that.

Electricity is a household hazard. I don`t consider it an exotic enough danger to not expect a teenager to know how to behave around it.

Stupid kid did stupid thing and suffered the consequences. Cause of problem = stupid kid.

If you`re going to be teaching a class that involves life-threateningly dangerous equipment, you have to assume that your students are going to do something stupid. Teenagers are notorious for making impulsive decisions without thinking things through. If the school could demonstrate that the teacher taught the students that the electrodes could deliver a fatal dose of electricity, and the kid did it anyway, the parents would have no grounds for a lawsuit.

and this parents are the reason we have warnings such as "Hot coffee may burn" or "falling off a cliff could result in injury`. Yeah i get it -"my son is never wrong, it must be somebody else`s fault, he would never do such a thing"- We have thrown common sense out the goddamn window, we expect some higher power to tell us what to be careful off. it wont be long before we see signs like "dont cross when red, cars may run you over, and it may result in injury"
LMFAO. What makes this all the more interesting, is that this, not the first time that this has been done though, proves that American`s are retarded.
On the basis of the foolishness of one youth (hardly uncommon amongst youths anywhere in the world), you conclude that 300 million people are retarded because they live in the same country.

If you believe that, you are either insane or retarded, and I mean that literally rather than as an insult. You`d have to have significantly less than normal intelligence to grope your way to such a bizarre conclusion based on irrelevant coincidence and think it makes sense.
I agree that the kid is stupid, but there is a valid point in that they were working with dangerous equipment.
The students should have been subject to some sort of safety training prior to being allowed to worth it. And in that respect I believe that the teacher does bear some of the fault.
i) There is no indication of how much or how little safety training was given beforehand. Why are you assuming it was none?

ii) An adolescent in a modern country should have already had sufficient safety training in day to day life to know that it isn`t safe to attach electrical cables to your nipples and pass a current through your chest. Who could get to that age and not know that? It`s like the school not telling pupils that it isn`t safe to try body piercing with power tools or shaving with a grinder.

So I disagree with you for those two reasons.

It`s not the volts that kill you, it`s the amps. The more volts, the less amps. That`s why a static shock, which is usually over a thousand volts doesn`t kill you, where a car battery using only 12 volts and a ton of amps, can. In short, this kid deserved every bit of what he got.

Erm, yes you can. It`s not the volts that kill you it`s the amps, car betteries have incredibly high ampage ratings, they have to to make an engine turn over. Please don`t make statements like this. Coming from someone who`s age shows you`re 40-49 some kids on here may believe you know what you`re talking about and try it. Try and be a little more responsible.
