xavroche: I never mentioned any `doomsday scenario`, Perhaps you have confused my comments with some others.

Some others have mentioned that `unit cohesion` would suffer, And I agree. But as I mentioned before, My main concern is the safety of our troops in muslim countries that have a severe prejudice against gays. It`s hard enough completing missions there as it is, There is no sense in adding more to the myriad list of distrust issues already present.

If a wildfire was headed for your house, Would you spray gasoline on the roof ? I think not.

CrakrJak:You base your entire argument against allowing gays to openly serve on broad assumptions that aren`t backed by actual examples on the field and a doomsday scenario that basically can only be disproved if the experience of allowing gays to openly serve is attempted, and yet and you hide behind the idea that that would be foolhardy in case you are actually right.

At the same time you don`t answer the fact that basically every country that allows gays to openly serve has reported positively on the experience. No part of your doomsday scenario has materialized for any of these other countries, yet for some reason things wouldn`t go smoothly if the US allowed gays to openly serve.... I`m not really impressed by your logic here...

swaywithme,

I understand your man hasn`t had problems, but many places do. I at first opposed the ban on gay marriage, but I then realized I had no basis for doing so except distaste. now, I`m pro gay marriage, though it still gives me the willies. Because situations like yours happen doesn`t mean situations like mine don`t.

You were never in the "military" then. I happen to be in, and have served overseas for nearly 4 consecutive years with plenty of time in the sandbox. Don`t tell me I don`t know the military, Mr. "I had my own room".

I don`t think it`s very fair of you to say I don`t know the military, keeping in mind that you know nothing about me, or whether or not I need to get my rocks off watching a bunch of soldiers clean their balls. In Canada, our lifting of the ban of homosexuals has benefited our military. I posted some stats from a study earlier on- harassment of women had gone down by 46% because they weren`t afraid to register complaints because they were no longer being accused of being lesbian and being discharged.

My friend`s boyfriend has just returned from Iraq in the last couple months and if I suggested the being afraid to shower or to wake up in the same room as a gay man, he would laugh in my face! I`ve noticed first hand that straight boys tend to wake up with wood too. Why are the soldiers blindly walking around bumping in to each other? They should turn on lights yo.

I don`t understand this concept that if you`re sex A, then your gay comrade AUTOMATICA

One little point to the provoking the Muslims oversees argument by demolishing DADT...

Here`s a few of the major players that have been in Afghanistan
-UK
-Germany
-United States
-Canada
-France
-Italy
-Spain
-Poland

The States are the only one where homosexuals are not allowed to serve openly...I have never heard any of these other countries having more of a backlash because of it. Besides, you`re America...I thought you weren`t supposed to be afraid what they thought?

So.. if there are gays in the military, you want to be the first person behind them? Not so much a Freudian Slip as a Freudian Lube.

Don`t matter if they`re gay, straight, male, female or Canadian - if you want to fight, fight.

Swaywithme,

You don`t know the military. It is very possible to get harassed. We have policies against that sort of thing, but remember, the vast majority of the military are salty dogs who will hand you a straw ans tell you to suck it up if you complain about anything.

With the showers thing, just because they have permission to shower seperately doesn`t mean they will take it. If you were horny and had the chance to spy on a sexy, muscular man all lathered up don`t tell me you won`t take that chance. Or for the men, `accidently` getting poked by someones 5pm "morning wood" is just kind of, you know...

Not all Muslims are evil and I never said they were. I simply questioned the overly broad statement Baal made about forcing "peaceful muslims" to move their community center.
I simply pointed out they don`t have a "peaceful" history. Remember the story of the NY Muslim man that beheaded his wife? He founded a TV station called "Bridges TV" in 2004, to help portray Muslims in a more positive light.
It takes a severe lack of compassion to behead someone. I`m no fan of Christians or Catholics either but they`re not blowing anything up, beheading anyone or throwing acid on anyones face. The crimes that come out of the mid-east follow them here. I think if they were sincere about wanting to be American then honoring that site as holy ground should supercede their desire to anger their neighbors. Build a mosque down the street. No harm no foul and it would make them seem a bit more American.

Do you actually think that saaayy...someone like Johnny Weir- The beautiful glitter unicorn that he is is the type of male that is going to be joining the army?

@miraclewik as well-

In Israel- Homosexuals in the military are actually given more rights...They have permission to shower separately from their comrades just like women do and I`m relatively sure that no one is going to molest you in your sleep -_______-;

Sorry, I don`t understand the question. Are you asking why the table didn`t have to give consent? Because it`s inanimate. Consent is something only a living being can give, and an intellectually advanced being at that.
If anything, the aggressor is the dog.
Agreed.
Will the dog suffer mental anguish over any of this? What will be the impact other than the dog getting his rocks off?
I don`t know. Animals (mostly) haven`t evolved the same intellect as us, so perhaps the dog would be happy and not care.
But I`ve seen a dog chase a ball onto a road and get run over.
So I think we should sometimes step in, when the animal`s own instinctive behaviour could be to its detriment, because it doesn`t know any better.

Interesting how you totally skated around the topic to attack me.

But If you want to get onto the subject of `Libels` I can demonstrate the dozens of libels drawn against Jews and Christians in the muslim world and the 16,000+ murders perpetrated by muslims, Since 9/11, On `non-believers`, Gays, Women, an Apostates. That`s not even including the violence muslims commit against other muslims of different sects.

As I`ve said before, I don`t hate gays, I don`t hate muslims either. I even stated the pastor that planned to burn korans shouldn`t do so, Just as Imam Rauf shouldn`t be forcing his mosque plans so close to Ground Zero.

Tell that to your Taqiyya libel spewing friends, and then talk about how "rumor and suspicion" are enemies of friendship while you sow those seeds intentionally within your own ranks.

As I`ve said, forcing peaceful Muslims to move a community center they built for all of New York, whilst pushing this ridiculous concept of a "victory Mosque" and twisting their intentions to your own people does far more harm and sows hostility with both groups.

You seem to miss the whole concept of "Don`t Ask, Don`t Tell" Yes, they will enlist you and nowhere will they ask your sexual orientation, but that always means you are expected to live completely closeted. You cannot be an OPENLY gay man or woman in the Military.

Just ask Daniel Choi who was discharged from the army after coming out television. He was one of 59 people who have been discharged from the army after their sexuality was discovered between 2004-2009. That`s NOT okay!

I was in the army infantry for 6 years (2-14 Inf, 10th Mtn Div)and did tours in Mogodishu Somalia, oct 3 and 4 1993 (Black Hawk Down) and operation restore democracy in Haiti. We had one soldier in our platoon that acted completely gay.... I mean GAY, but he had a wife and child and was a good soldier so everyone wrote it off as just being effeminant (sp?). Two years later, he was caught giving oral sex to a buddy that was passed out drunk. He was caught by the guys wife. He was imprisoned for first degree sodomy at Levinworth for 6 months. There was no one else at our unit that displayed feminine or gay behavior. I showered next to this guy, shared a foxhole with him. If gays want in the military, keep `em with the women in non-combat arms related MOS`S. We`ve got enough to worry about when bullets our whizzing by our heads.

I mean... come on... they are people too. Are they inferior? No... Aren`t we all past these civil rights yet? I thought we solved these decades ago... Guess not. And now someone wants to ensure equal rights (Cuz they need to do it again) and no one wants them too. It is ridiculous. People in this country need to get their heads out of their butts and realize that there is more to life than race, sexual orientation and such. Why are these things so important? They aren`t. People need to just FRICKEN THINK!!!!

As always, you`ve managed to wedge your prejudices into the discussion. Well done.

Up until that point the actual picture made no sense. Yeah, you can`t tell. So what? Same could be said for any other reason they couldn`t serve. "Which one is the 7 year old" could have worked just as well.

Now though, it works. Nobody would have been able to tell while alive either. Gay personnel, open or otherwise, would be under no more threat than anyone else.

Also, no military in the coalition of the willing was targeted for their acceptance of homosexuality.

The impact is zero Crakr, and a demonstration of the complete disconnect between you and reality.

Can we remember the phrase we are discussing?

"Don`t ask, Don`t tell"

To me it means I`m not going to ask you about your sexuality (either because it is none of my business or I don`t care) and you`re under no obligation to tell anyone about your sexuality (meaning you don`t have to tell anyone about your sexuality).

To me it boils down to if a homosexual person is just cool about it and not put it out there for everyone to see, then no one is going to ask him/her about it and no one knows if what their sexuality is therefore it becomes a non-issue.

It is kind of like any testosterone driven sport, straight guys are going to be a little uneasy about an openly flamboyant homosexual in the locker room but if the guy doesn`t tell anyone or act in a way that would make his team mates uncomfortable, no one will know the wiser or CARE for that matter.

And if it turns into a tolerance issue...where is the tolerance for the straight guy`s

@swaywithme: comparing a table to a living creature is ridiculous. A living creature is capable of feeling distress and anger. A table is not. Inanimate objects are not comparable to living creatures.

We already seen the reaction many in the muslim world had to a preacher who threatened to burn korans, Even though he didn`t do it, The protests against it were clearly ammunition for radicals to continue attacks against our armed forces over there.

Do we really want to add more fuel to the fire, Right now, While we have US forces stationed in countries whose population is openly hostile to gays ?

I AM being a bit unreasonable, but I am Tired, so do excuse my crankiness.

But I don`t think, fundamentally, you cannot make the table-animal jump. I don`t own a dog, and I`m not expert, but I`m fairly sure a dog knows the difference between table- an inanimate, lifeless object. and a sheep, an animal which I`m certain it knows IS an animal (whether it`s knows its a sheep or not is another discussion) . On that level alone, it falls down.
Persepective-wise, ie. from where the dog is looking, it might be the same, but there is a huge difference.

Also the sheep-dog idea may work on a `playing the same role` level, but the leap to human also falls, a human cannot be doing nothing. A reasoning human, capable of introspection, makes that decision, and is accountable for it. that is why we are responsible to such laws.

I`ve noticed you`ve not posted anything about why. This is a thought experiment. More emphasis on the thought.

You`re also jumping a thousand steps ahead. Did I say it was the same? No. I said from the dog`s perspective it was the same, which it is. Unless you`re arguing it can distinguish those moral choices, in which case we`re back to square 1.

My point (which you picked up on at first) is that if a table can`t molest a dog, why is a sheep, playing the same role as the table (doing nothing) molesting the dog?

In turn then, why is a person, if they do nothing to entice the dog?

Notice how I said "why are these different". A question, looking for your answer.
Not: "These are the same! Go drat your dog with a table!", a statement of questionable value.

Also, Sway-with-me makes all the right points w/r what the debate should actually be.

"Should gays be allowed in the military?" Yes.
"Won`t that impact X negatively" No. Nothing has suggested there is any negative impact. Real world trumps your theory.

Now, back to the table molesters.

"Ignoring that a table can`t..."

Ah, so you did catch my point in there somewhere. From the perspective of the male dog, humping the table, or humping the sheep, nothing has changed.

Where does the wrong come into it? (Unfortunately, ignoring the sheep`s perspective on the whole thing).

Lets open things up further. What about the mentally handicapped? Should they never have sex? Only with each other?

A little less offense at the questions, and a little more effort with answers please.

-Allowing Homosexuals to serve openly in Canadian Forces has not led to any change in military performance, unit cohesion, or discipline.

-Members of the Gay community serving describe good working relationships with peers.

-Military Women being molested declined by 46% after the ban was lifted. While there were several reasons why harassment declined, one factor was that after the ban was lifted women were free to report assaults without fear that they would be accused of being a lesbian.

-Before lifting the ban, a 1985 survey of 6,500 male soldiers found that 62% said that they would refuse to share showers, undress or sleep in the same room as a gay soldier. After the ban lifted, there was no increase in disciplinary, performance, sexual misconduct, or resignation problems.

-None of the 905 assault cases in the military from November 92-August 95 involved gay bashing or could be attributed to the sexual orientation of one of the parties.

Sorry, two part message! I was curious on Canada`s stance on serving in the military when you`re gay and learned that the ban was lifted in 92 (when I was 4!) and they did studies to see how military life was changed and it looks so promising.

I think how the situation is handled comes down to the soldiers superiors and how they react..

This is Canada though, we`re famously more accepting ¬___¬

Same question, replace table with sheep.

Woah, woah, forgetting that a table can`t molest in the first place- you can`t jump from a table to a sheep, you can never make a jump from a piece of wood, an inanimate object, to an animal, for that matter a human, who can make reasoned, rational decisions.

"An animal is incapable of giving consent, so bestiality is illegal."
Bob, that is not why bestiality is illegal.

For one thing, I`m pretty sure that it`s a rare thing for a cow to poke it`s head into someone`s door and say "Someone come out here and milk me, please" or "It`s time to cut me into little pieces that will be shipped across country and, mostly, wasted."

Bestiality became illegal because feared human-animal hybrids would overrun humanity. Really.

But that`s my point Baal. An animal CAN`T give that type of consent, because it requires a type of intelligence that only human adults have. Just like an animal doesn`t have certain rights that a human does. It can`t enter a legal contract, it can`t vote, it can be bought and sold in a way that is illegal for humans.

Most behaviour is deviant and abnormal, so your argument is irrelevant.

Say, for example, you`re a fan of a particular baseball team.

A large majority of the population will not be fans of that baseball team. Maybe it`s a really popular team and has several million fans...which is still maybe 1% of the population of the USA.

Being a fan of that baseball team is therefore highly abnormal and therefore deviant.

It works that way for pretty much everything.

There are a couple of things being missed by some people:

i) Military is not civilian.
ii) This is about what is, not what should be.

Military life is quite different to civilian life. You sign away some of your rights and freedoms to become part of the whole, sort of like countries giving up their independence to form a union. Your relationship with fellow soldiers must be different to civilian relationships - you need to be ready to kill or die together and that`s a whole different ball game.

Homosexuality can affect that. It`s not a matter of whether it should, but whether it does. Arguing that it shouldn`t is therefore irrelevant.

The bottom line is "what makes the military more efficient?" If the number of soldiers bothered by homosexuality is larger than the number of homosexual soldiers, then DADT makes sense.

Social change has to come first, not military change.

It`s not fair...and it`s not about fairne

Bestiality is not about consent. My leg has never sexually abused a dog, but it`s hard to argue that the dog didn`t give my leg consent.

How many times...
It`s not about deviancy from the norm, it`s about CONSENT.
If people are capable of giving full, rational, informed consent, then it`s fine.
A child is not capable of giving that type of consent, so paedophilia is illegal.
An animal is incapable of giving consent, so bestiality is illegal.

So no, your slippery slope argument fails.

What bothers me most about the repeal of DADT is that they sent out all of these questionnaires to the troops, with the bs excuse of "Fill it out we care about your opinion" and then said "Oh wait nevermind, we are just going to legislate, and screw your opinion"

Asking soldiers for their opinion is strange enough in the first place, you are supposed to give them orders, not care what they think. But if you are going to make a show of asking them, then why the hell would you not take it in to consideration? Why not listen to Gates?

Because the elections are in November, and the study is not due back until December. Democrats are so afraid of losing their majority that they are getting ready to shove as much legislation as they can down our throats. "Get it all in before the deadline Sam!"

You could basically ride this logic to an all male, all white, all straight, all christian army, and then you could probably argue that people don`t trust people from another social class/from another state/from another political party. I think you can easily argue such a thing as that a muslim shouldn`t be in the armed forces these days because his squad mates don`t trust him... Thankfully we have freedom of religion as a constituional right. However, this is just another case where an over 200 year old document just doesn`t defend rights that are relevant today (sexual preferences)... it`s really time for a series of amendments...

What most civilians, politicians, and military higher-ups don`t understand is that the removal of the DA;DT policy really won`t be as ground-breaking as they think. Homosexuals are already in the military, and a large majority of the time, those assigned the same squad/platoon/shop/unit know their sexual orientation. Yes, there will be the odd hate crime here and there, but there are multiple sexual assaults -- yet women are still allowed in the military. And guess what? Men aren`t completely comfortable with women being in the military, either. So, really, the debate is more about votes and public opinion than the military.

Personally I think don`t ask, don`t tell is fine as an idea, just don`t talk about poo that`ll piss off the people around you when your lives are on the line is generally a good rule. The part that I think is ridiculous and cruel is that if a "trustworthy source" outs you from overhearing a private phone call, reading your mail, or any number of shady "reasons" (read: suspicions) you`re out.

And if you`re going down this road, it has to work both ways. If a gay is out for talking, so is a straight. Brag about all the pussy you had back home, gone. But as adults, I also think that if ever
