I wish the pastor would have gone through with it, although I understand why he didn`t

It would have been nice to see someone stand up to the muslim extremists that censor our freedom of speech by threats of violence.

"I wish the pastor would have gone through with it"

Not a wise move IMO. The act does nothing more than inciting anger and negative reactions. Free Speech all you want, but (I`m sure) free speech wasn`t initially designed so people could go around being complete dicks to each other. It frustrates me when people cry "FREE SPEECH!" in defense against a mean-natured act.

A butter knife can be used to stab your neighbor, but that wasn`t what it was designed for. :(

Facebook is a metaphorical "book", so the way to burn it would be with metaphorical fire. Most obvious metaphorical fire? A flame war. Ha! Let`s just see this a-hole try to come up with a rational argument that a Starfleet cadet would be given command of a ship of the line.

The problem is that the American Constitution is set up with the belief that the ultimate form of freedom is to be able to do whatever you want.

However part of freedom is to have your individual rights protected, and those include your rights to not be discriminated against and for the state not to allow other people to incite hatred against you. That`s why most more economically developpd/democratic countries which allow free speech have laws which limit a person`s ability to incite violence hate against others. Imho opinion, this kind of controversy where heads of states have to get involved over some random redneck douche`s actions shows that America probably needs a constituional reform to outlaw this kind of action, especially given the grave consequences that this already has had.

"It would have been nice to see someone stand up to the muslim extremists that censor our freedom of speech by threats of violence."

This has nothing to do with the handful of extremist muslims and this is not a victory for them. What this has to do with is not sending a royal f u to the 10 million muslims who live in the US and the one and a half billion muslims worldwide who are mostly moderate but who would understandably be pushed towards extremism by this sort of action. It`s also about showing the muslim population that we are smart enough to tell the difference between mainstream islam and radical islam, and that we won`t allow those who aren`t smart enough to tell the difference to do whatever they want...

The problem isn`t what the 50 poeple were going to do. It`s that 50 people announced what they were going to do and that it was actually going to take place. This is similar to KKK or neo-Nazi demonstrations in the US. People from other countries can`t really wrap their heads around the fact that "free speech" is defended to such a radical extent, and to be honest I don`t blame them.

@xavroche It`s a massive FU to the worlds Muslims but i disagree about the " one and a half billion muslims worldwide who are mostly moderate but who would understandably be pushed towards extremism by this sort of action" It`s not understandable and that were the damage is. if 50 backwards people being condemned by their country and people can inspire muslims around the world to riot or go to extremism. they`re not moderate....

There was a Documentary on panaorma looking at some of the Islamic faith schools teachings. Insulting all other faiths, but the worlds other religions don`t take to the streets.

Muhammed cartoons saw attacks on embassies TV stations and protests and rioting on streets with signs inciting murder. You`re not moderate if you cant distinguish between the few and majority and cause chaos over it.

When other religions are attacked you dont get the backlash which you get from Islam.

    is that...his twitter?

Yes haveheart it is! See, female Muslims must keep their twitters covered by a scarf or burka at all times. Male Muslims are free to walk around with their twitters exposed.

    Two observations:
    1) isn`t it funny how the MSM & the world generalizes "all Americans" by the acts of 50, but Americans are "wrong" to criticize Islam for the actions carried out & supported by millions? (if not 10s or 100s of millions)
(some wise IABers have already pointed this out, I`m not claiming to be the originator of these ideas, eh?)

    2) That "Islam: The Religion Of Peace" riots and MURDERS over CARTOONS!

    3) Or that the Associated Press vowed to NOT carry any pictures of Americans burning Korans, but had no troubles showing FAKE pictures back in 2006...

    ok, 3 observations...

The ramifications of TALKING about burning a book, an object, a thing, are ridiculous. The book is considered holy by muslims, there are other books that are considered holy by other religions but the one thing all the holy scriptures have in common, is that they are creations of people and the only value they have is imbued into them by other people. It`s like with currency, a one dollar bill is worth one dollar, because that`s the value it has been given by people.

Interesting, he said "American`s" and not "Christians". I want to point out that the Pastor burning the Koran is doing so not as an American, but as a Christian. yes he is from America, but his ideology is founded in faith and not nationalism. Granted it is much safer to rail on "Americans" than on "Christians" but it is preferable for Mr. A to liken this circumstance as a vendetta between a country and a religion, rather than framing it as a religious issue.

The issue is not America vs. Islam.

Ok, first off, I thought this was funny.

That said, the issue ISN`T America vs. Islam. It`s not even Christianity vs. Islam. It is a radical on the same level as those nuts over at Westborough vs. Islam. I don`t judge all Muslims for the events of 9/11, and I`d appreciate it if I wasn`t associated with this pastor.

THAT said, I see why the pastor was going to do it. It was to get a response. Here`s the scenario.

    A) No response, like what happened. Everyone thinks the pastor is a nut. Life goes on. No major political ramifications.

    B) Someone does respond, innocent people get hurt. The nation goes nuts over domestic terrorists and America is put back into a post 9/11 view of Islam, associating all Muslims with those who reacted. Obvious major political ramifications.

Scenario B was obviously what this guy was aiming for, not any BS symbolism behind a Koran burning.

Note that the typical middle-eastern dialect shown in movies/tv-series is not the iranian accent. It`s nowhere near as funny.

Under the 1st freakin` amendment, people have the right to burn the Koran. I don`t agree with it, but it is not the governments job to say so. The Koran burners will just have to deal with the side effects of the public.

People can burn korans all they want, it is their right to do so, but the fact that they`re doing it to "memorialize the victims of 9/11" is possibly the most retarded thing I`ve ever heard. That`s akin to destroying all the Japanese-made products you own to memorialize the bombing of Pearl Harbor. drat religion, it makes people stupid.

"I`m sorry SilverThread but the issue IS America vs. Islam"

This kind of comment makes me feel very sorry for the 10.4 million Muslim Americans. 3000 people died on 9/11. I will never forget the gut wrenching pain I felt on that Tuesday. Even today, nine years later, just thinking about it can bring tears to my eyes. But at the same time it makes me sick that we ostracize 3000 times that many people in our society simply because the average American still does not really understand exactly what happened that day or why it happened.

the only problem i see here is that mahmoud is assuming that many americans participated in this "national" book burning day; in fact, it was an isolated small area that participated and not only that, the event lasted a whopping three hours. The problem in the world is associating small isolated events within a social group with the parent group of it. in this case, assuming that all americans want to burn books and hate on other beliefs; to my knowledge that`s not what america was founded upon
