Looks to me like it failed.
Somebody already ran her over in a bus or something and she`s been smeared further up the road.
Shame

Reminds me of that really good chalk drawing guy.

This sucks though.

I agree with CodeJockey, I`m seeing some serious backfire potential in this plan.

So the goal of this "speed bump" is to make drivers slam on their brakes and swerve to avoid an imaginary child? Whoever thought of this genius idea is probably the same person who controls road maintenance in my town.

Driver: "Dammit! Is this another one of those optical illusions?!"
*VrrrrrrmmmMMMMMMM!*
Girl: "ARRRHGGGG!!!"
*ga-bump-ga-bump! Scree!*
Driver: "Hm. There`s something wrong. Better back up and check."
*VrrrrrrmmmMMMMMMM! ga-bump-ga-bump! Scree!*
Passenger: "That`s just a bump in the road."
Girl: "MOTHER-F*CKERS!!!"
*VrrrrrrmmmMMMMMMM! ga-bump-ga-bump! Vrrrmmmmmm!!!*

@DavioMagnifi- You kick them from inside the car? You must have REALLY long legs.

I forsee more accidents as motorists slam on their brakes for non-existent kids.

This might not be a good idea. When speeders see a kid in the street they might think it`s one of these things

2 points for hitting the kid with the ball.

eventually people will get so used to seeing these "kids" in the road that they won`t slow down for any kid.

The problem I see with this method is that a driver caught off guard might slam on his or her brakes causing an accident.

"In UK we have signs which tell you your speed shows a smilee face if ure under the speed limit or frown if ure above."

I always light up the frown deliberately.

this will just make you slow down to see the optical illusion work. so I guess it does the job

All speed reducing measures aside from physical measures have a short term effect. What happens is u get desensistised to them. In UK we have signs which tell you your speed shows a smilee face if ure under the speed limit or frown if ure above. But effectiveness only lasts few months before u programme yourself to ignore it. The same will happen here you programme yourself to ignore it and if a kid stupidly runs out into middle of the road your less likely to stop immediately.

Furthermore roads are dangerous, kids need to be taught proper road safety by parents and looked after properly i.e not allowed out until they can stay on pavement. Not screwing with everyone to slow down less then speed limits (often what speed reducing measures do in uk 30 mph limit u have to go 5 over the bump to do no damage)

Better than real speedbumps, which actually cause a lot of accidents and property damage

"that is trippy, but next time i see a real kid in the street i won`s slow down because i will expect it to be one of those."

This is exactly why that is a retarded idea.

Doesn`t seem like the sharpest idea to make others jaded to such a scenario; which will inevitably happen given the way this is. They should at least include a big speed bump.

@5Cats the paintings are being put in existing school zones, so drivers should be slowing down anyway.

I think MORE accidents will be caused by sudden swerves and panic stopping when drivers see these things.
Prevent accidents, by causing them! Government genius at work!

...Until the people get used to it and then some girl that looks similar to the one painted on the road gets killed because people just don`t care about the sign anymore.

Okay....

What this does is train drivers in Vancouver to NOT slow down when they see a kid.

"Oh it`s another speed trap! BOOM!"

"Oh poo!"

*Sees kid in road* "Oh, it`s one of those lifelike speed bumps" *Bump* "Wow, these get more lifelike every day..."

the crying wolf story and i think there will be accidents from someone not paying attention and slams on thier brakes.

"This is kinda like crying wolf... people will start to ignore it." and then squish a real kid thinking it`s another illusion

My exact thoughts. Stupidest idea ever!

nice way to cause a swerve and crash IMO..

easiest way to slow people down is to triple fines in trouble spots..

i think thats going to backfire horribly, because when there is an actual kid in the road drivers will just ignore it and shrug it off as another painting until *bump* oops.
0
Reply
Male 1,557
What moron came up with that? People will slam on their brakes or swerve violently and probably cause a whole load of other accidents!

Or they`ll get useed to it, then when a kid really does run into the road they wont brake.

novel now, but then the drivers will be used to running over little girls in the road and not stop for a real one

Set up a camera next to it. Watch as people drive their cars into a tree. Post it on Youtube.

I can see this backfiring hard. If people get used to "life-like" little girls playing on the road, they might start ignoring them or mistaking "real-life" little girls for them.

Male 772
That may make SOME drivers slow down, but others will swerve to avoid the kid and end up crashing into a tree or a house and killing themselves. Good job Vancouver :P
