Good point.

I don`t think they had a board meeting and said "Let`s make a policy that`s going to bankrupt us, and have it where if we don`t follow that policy, we get fined billions of dollars."

I did think when watching this segment it was one of the strongest ones I`ve seen from the Daily Show in months (though every episode and is great and Stuart is phenomenal). So um...who`s going to his rally?

Madest: can you provide a source for that information please. Because it`s fairly accepted that the government policy (including FHA and freddie and fannie) caused the housing bubble. Bank CEOs weren`t just sitting around wringing their hands one night and deciding to start giving out sub-prime loans to people with no credit.

Mortgage backed securities was a damn bad idea to begin with. But allowing them to run wild under the auspices of giving more poor people houses was an absolute time bomb. This was fraud on a massive basis, Worse than the savings & loan scandal and the culprits have still not seen a minute of jail time. Let`s take a look at a few who got rich off this scandal.

Franklin D. Raines,
[Currently a Housing Policy Adviser for the Obama Campaign]
[Carter administration assistant director for Domestic Policy]
Fannie MaeChairman and CEO Designate
Salary $526,154, Award/Bonus $1,109,589

James A. Johnson
[Obama VP Vetter and Funds Bundler]
Chairman and CEO
Salary $966,000, Award/Bonus $1,932,000

Jamie Gorelick
[Deputy Attorney General for Clinton]
[Currently works for Law Firm representing Fannie Mae]
Vice-Chairman of Fannie Mae:

CrakrJack, The housing bubble was`nt caused by the FHA, Freddie Mac or Fanny Mae. You`re being a dick for blaming it on an institution that`s been around for 50 years, developed for and succeeded in fighting discrimination in housing.
No the bubble was caused by large financial institutions. They were smarter than the regulators and the bureaucracy built to monitor them. They greased the palms of the right politicians and gained the right to gamble with invested money. The brilliance of their scheme was they made something that was worthless, valuable and that fed the greed that led the banks to commit fraud by offering 0 down on 1/2 million dollar homes. You should really read a book on the subject because it`s clear you`re horribly misinformed.

Like I said CrakrJak President Clinton tried reverse course with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1999.
Bill Clinton made some stupid decisions but he made more smart decisions.
No president is perfect but as the way things stand I would very much prefer Bill Clinton to what we got now.

On June 6, 1996, President Clinton announced that he had directed FHA to reduce the up-front mortgage insurance premium (UFMIP) for first-time homebuyers who receive housing counseling. FHA Link

Clinton at least, Realized the problem though.

Cajun247: Bill Clinton signed into law GSE`s like Freddie Mac to purchase subprime loans that were created by lenders. He basically formally approved subprime lending.

It is documented by the FTC

Clinton`s changes:
"Freddie Mac, one of the primary government-sponsored enterprises involved in the purchase of mortgages, recently announced plans to enter the secondary market in subprime loans by purchasing significant numbers of "A minus" subprime mortgages by 1998 and the higher-risk "B and C" loans by 1999.(20)" FTC Link

Even so I still prefer a flip-flopper who realized his mistake and tried to fix it than one who can`t settle on a position.

Oh sure George W. Bush tried to stop the crisis while he was spending MILLIONS of Dollars while:
1)Looking for non-existent WMDs
2)Castigating people in Iraq (deBaathification).
3)Enacting the stimulus bill approved by Republicans (a majority of them approved the 2008 stimulus).
Then he tried to say we could profit from the war with the oil we`d find. Of course we could...
...not without losing face of course.

He did that AFTER he expanded the Community Re-investment act. He made it possible, no, he commanded banks to give risky loans to meet a quota.

It was only AFTER that expansion that things got this bad.

Actually it was the democrats for the most part.

I`ve called him the lesser of two evils from the start.

In fact, that`s how I`ve referred to ANY party related politics since I discovered what politics were.

It`s time we STOP this "lesser of two evils" bullsh*t, and just vote Cthulhu into office. At the very least we know he WILL keep his promises: Drive everyone in the world insane, and cause the end of mankind.

The result was the financial crisis, which goes a lot deeper than just "Bush`s failed economic policies". Scapegoating Bush has been a great political tool for the Dems, but how about we stop pointing the figure and start coming up with meaningful solutions?

I don`t think we can just point fingers at Bush and say "he caused the financial crisis!!!"

The whole mess started when the Fed government decided to start pushing banks to increase our % of home ownership in the USA in the 1990s, encouraging banks to make riskier loans. This policy continued throughout the Bush administration and was backed by BOTH political parties. Banks took the cue and figured out how to profit from the bad loans by bundling them and selling them off as securities. Once banks realized they could turn a HUGE profit with their rotten loans, they kicked their irresponsible lending into high gear (and to new heights) and the secondary markets lapped it up. Finally, there were irresponsible individual consumers who gladly accepted free money.

Here`s a scenario:

A guy robs a jewelry store. He gets away with a few rings, a necklace, and some watches, but another guy comes along before the cops get there, notices the window is busted, and starts looting the scene of the crime, taking everything else.

Guess who is to blame for the crime? BOTH!

Both men are caught. Which one gets the stiffer penalty? The second guy. He did more damage, so he gets a stiffer penalty.

Obama tried to "fix" our financial crisis by quadrupling it! He took Bush`s 300 billion dollar deficit, accumulated over 8 years, and made it 1.3 trillion in 2 years.

You can`t put out a fire by throwing fire on it. You don`t heal a gunshot wound by shooting the hole. We need to cut spending, eliminate useless money pit programs, and learn to live on less (as a country).

If a business tried to run like our government is running, they would be bankrupt and shut down, and the officers would go to jail for

In a reasonable world everything Obama promised would be done, or wouldn`t have to be done in the first place. Unfortunately politics is not reasonable. If you want someone to blame for "Obama`s" failures, blame the drated up system he has to work in. I voted for optimism, and reality fell short, but that`s always the risk with optimism.

When are we going to decide to vote every single one of these career politician non-nice individuals out no matter what party they are? I mean McCain probably would have gotten us involved in WW3 and nuked to death, but Obama is putting us and particularly our children in the poor house by "cleaning up a mess he didn`t make" by... making a bigger mess? Seriously, on what planet does spending more money solve the problem of having spent too much money? Baal: The `Blame Bush` mantra has worn thin, So has the misplaying of race card. Obama can not continue to keep blaming others, At some point he has to own this mess, So far he`s still in denial.

He`s had a democrat majority of both houses of congress and a filibuster proof majority in the senate, If the democrats were united there is no legislation the republicans could stop. After 2 years of this rare majority, The economy is worse off, Unemployment is going higher, People are still stuck in houses worth less than what they owe on their mortgages, and a record level of debt.

Obama is making Jimmy Carter look preferable.

Memory. I has it.

What was the surplus after Clinton, and what was the predicted 10 year deficit?
What was the surplus after Bush, and what was the predicted 10 year deficit?

What president did Karl Rove blame for the economy, the week before Obama took office?
What president did Cheney Blame for the economy, the week after Obama took office?
Which President was in office when the financial crisis actually hit?

People who buy the poo from the above people hook line and sinker, then come out and demand swift retribution for Obama breaking 4.3% of his promises.

And no, you don`t count "in the works" until they reach their deadlines. Obviously. Do I need to explain how time works? Seriously, this is the reason people are calling you a Republican.

You don`t seem to understand what a troll is. A TROLL is someone who acts like an ass for the sake of provoking reactions. For a textbook example of a troll, look at Pmarren.

I was defending myself from an attack against my character in the form of a pointed finger.

My vocabulary is often vulgar in nature and I have no intentions of curtailing that tendency. I also tend to insult people often, because it`s more fun to insult people that to try to deal with stupidity using logic (since, you know, that rarely works).

How about this Altaru? You stop posting stupid poo and I`ll stop pointing out how stupid it is, m-kay? Same as in real life, eh?

The difference is, I don`t claim to be polite. I`m going to sling around whatever I`m feeling at the moment. Same as real life.

I`m also not in my forties sounding like a hyperactive teenage girl texting in half my posts...

[quote]So the "Bush Era" made things worse, the way a sore festers. Nope! Not blaming Bush, nuh-uh![/quote]
Yeah, they kinda did. So have quite a few problems since Obama took office. There are a LOT of problems, that started quite a while ago (probably before I was even born), that are just now really coming to light.

Stop twisting words to suit your opinions. You wanna point out people who blame Bush? How `bout you actually find them, instead of pointing your fingers at everyone, just like the people you`re trying to find.

Oh another thing, not to sound like a "nut" I suppose, but there was one presidential candidate that didn`t make a ton of BS promises and actually had a real plan to get the country back on track. Unfortunately he didn`t come with a big gleaming smile and speeches to melt your heart.

that makes all the time my husband spent becoming an electrician oh so worthless. Now he`s taking a job with the local cable company installing cable television. WOOOOO HOOO!

Say what you want against tax breaks for the rich, but they help out the poor too. If the rich don`t have to spend as much money they will employ more people and pay those people more. It`s a fact and it`s so logical!!! But fine whatever, continue supporting his stimulus packages, because God knows another one of the back roads in my neighborhood could use some repaving. (But there`s still a huge pothole on my street guess that one doesn`t matter)

All I hear in 2 years is "It`s Bush`s fault wah wah....it`s only been 2 years wah wah wah"

Seriously 2 year is more than enough time. All Obama has done is thrown money at the problem. In my neck of the woods that means TONS of road improvements. Thanks Obama for putting our....road crews to work? What about the unions you promised to protect...Oh wait you only meant SEIU...My proud union card carrying IBEW member of a husband has been unemployed for 2 years now, coincidence? There used to be a tax break in the area where if you did any kind of improvements, electrical, date, new windows ANYTHING you would get a percentage of the costs reimbursed on your taxes. That kept many folks busy working and a lot of the buildings in the city up to code with all the new enviro friendly items. It was kind of a win win...Obama comes into office and all the sudden businesses no longer have any initiative to do improvements therefore the construction field takes a nose dive and .

I`m not blaming Bush (exclusively), you f*cking retard. I said "past administrations" because not all the problems of today started during the Bush era, even I know that. They just sort of festered and got worse, like that open sore that doesn`t get infected `til you think it`s almost closed.

And I also stated, quite clearly, that I don`t take sides. Politics are bullsh*t to begin with.

And this isn`t Twitter. You don`t have to add "@" to the start of any names you mention. They won`t link to anything.

Hey @ElMustache! When the Dems were in opposition, they too voted NO on everything! Back then it was OK because `that is what an opposition party is supposed to do". NOW when the Dems can`t even get their own members to vote yes, it`s the Reps fault for not supporting bills they had NO VOICE in? Bills they`re opposed to?

We don`t need name calling, or wedge issues. We need a cooperative effort to put people back to work, to bring back jobs to the US and out of foreign hands. Over the last 35 years, our economy has slowly become one based on services. We used to make things here! The only thing the republicans seem to be advocating for is the same thing that got us here. Corporate loop holes and subsidies, Tax cuts for wealthy americans, the dissolvement of social programs. This is no time for that. You`re allowed to your own opinion but I`m telling you, Putting power back into the hands of the same party that brought us economic ruin via deregulation is a HUGE mistake.

Hammer: Going through the political process and having an open discussion about the issues is one thing and blatant obstructionism is another. Bi partisanship would be amazing. Obama has reached out to the republicans and it hasn`t improved anything.

@ElMustache

That`s how a representative democracy works. If everything just got passed through because we want the President to look like he`s done something since he got elected, our system would be much WORSE than it currently is. The whole purpose of the way our system is set up is to SLOW DOWN the political process, not speed it up. The slower it goes, generally speaking, the more thought out and useful the bill is. If it is rushed through, it simply hasn`t had enough time to develop.

Also, it is not the job of the minority party to agree with everything the majority says, it`s the job of the majority to CONVINCE the minority, and more importantly, be BIPARTISAN. Granted, all politicians are, to some degree, corrupt, but trust me, if given a bill that makes conservative sense, and pleases their constituents, the Republican senators will pass a bill through. But so far, no such bill has been preposed that has passed.

hey Elmustache:

The democrats have a 60% majority.
What that means is:

If every republican votes no.
And every democrat votes yes.

The count is 60% yes to 40% no. "The Measure Passes."

Republicans cant stop a dam thing that other democrats dont think is a bad idea as well.

2 freaking years trying to fix mistakes he didn`t make, being called a failure from day 1, dealing with opponents who fought even genuinely good ideas because of party bullsh*t...

The list goes on, and bigger f*ck-ups have gotten their second terms. I don`t get involved in politics, but seriously, I`d like to see you step up to the plate, snap your fingers, and fix the country. I would assume, from the number of mistakes he`s dealing with from multiple past administrations and all the problems and opposition he`s dealing with now, that it WOULD take more than two years.

Also, aren`t the first couple years supposed to be the "adjustment" phase anyway?

I honestly haven`t seen anyone give him a chance from the start. I don`t take sides, but I DO call things as I see them.

You mean the same thing thats been going on for the last 50 years for each different president? You mean the same things that make presidents seem bad one after the other? Don`t make promises you can`t keep. President or not, they have been in the political scene, they know what it takes, they still all made empty promises.

To be honest they need to find a way to overhaul the system so that Democracy works in 2010 and beyond, not what worked 100+ years ago.

Look, It`s not soley the presidents` fault. The senate republicans have said "NO" to every piece of legislation the house has passed, by fillibustering or voting nay in unison. If fingers are to be pointed, they should be directed at Yurtle the turtle (Mitch McConnell) and the rest of the republican senate.

the whole black thing was really just a "joke" (take it how you want it)

but the fact of the matter is that like i said...

nobody complained until HE got into office...people promise things all the time and promises are broken all the time...him being the president meant that he did both more lying than the other candidates and/or things are just to dratted up (not sure if im supposed to type "drat" or if it just does it itself...) for him to not be able to keep those promises...

things could be much worse than they are and im happy that they arent...

Not only has he caused some of the most major partisanship we`ve seen in the past century (sure, that`s objective, I know if you like the President you`ll come up with someone else you who believe has split the ranks more, but come on, he`s at least UP THERE), but he`s also let down his loyal followers.

I didn`t forget either, and neither did the political watchdog group PolitiFact. PolitiFact has been keeping track of over 506 recorded promises Obama made during his campaign, and the actions Obama is taking to fulfill those promises. They rate the incomplete actions as either "Stalled" or "In the Works", and the completed actions as having "Broken", "Kept", or "Compromised" in regards to his promise. They rate Obama`s 506 promises like so:
-122 promises kept (24.1%)
-39 promises compromised (7.7%)
-22 promises broken (4.3%)
-82 promises incomplete and stalled in action (16.2%)
-238 promises incomplete but in the works (47.0%)
The remaining half percent (3 promises) have yet to be rated by the site.
