Its an Irish tradition, they do that with riverdancing as well. Less distraction I think.

Haha, awesomeness <3
I`ve been Irish dancing for about 15 years now. Ya see people practising with their hands like this at eeeevery competition (usually backstage where we have to keep quiet), though it`s definitely different seeing it being put to use like this!

Why is anyone feeding the troll named PantaRhei?
Another European who wants to turn every subject into a "Americans are obese" conversation.
Tell ya what PantaRhei, you can do it all you want, but Europe is RIGHT behind us, and to tell you the truth, if England and other European countries kept better statistics, they might beat us. But the truth is, they didn`t even bother keeping track of the situation over there until recently, and they are no too concerned with doing it on a larger scale and more accurately because face it, they don`t want to take the title.
So shove your obesity and stop turning something that was supposed to be fun and silly into some smear campaign. And while you are at it, remove the stick from your rear.

@ Pantarehi:

actually, a lot of studies I`ve read have shown that the poorer people tend to be more obese than the wealthy. they can`t afford to buy all organic, healthy foods, and many of them don`t have time to cook every meal due to working at least one job. so they stick to the fast, cheap stuff--fast food and processed foods.

so, a wealthy nation and obesity do not always walk hand-in-hand.

"Are you joking? Seriously, Irish is a dead language..."

don`t you mean Gaelic? and it`s NOT a dead language, a lot of Celtic singing groups still use it--my friend`s grandmother is actually very fluent in it.

and, for the record, I`d travel to Ireland and Scotland in a heartbeat if I could.

@ Kadinsky & pdjr

Riverdance is definitely NOT an American invention.
It was created in London and opened on the east end theater district and had Michael Flatley as it`s principle dancer as he is said to be the world`s best Irish dancer. He was with the troupe until his ego outgrew reality and demanded a much higher salary so much so that he ended up leaving/getting fired and created his own show Lord Of The Dance.

@auburnjunky

What has that got to do with anything whatsoever? And that America feels the need to get involved in every war available since decades doesn`t change a gawd darned thang about the staggering obesityrate your country is dealing with. And by the way, maybe German isn`t my first language, but how is the fact that I can speak English on this level (because for the record, it`s not my native language) any less concerning? ;)

As auburnjunky stated - to keep in topic of the Irish discussion. It was the first thing I thought of in an Irish frame of mind.

Although I didn`t intend for it to start an us & them battle; it was only a joke. I`ll apologize now in case it gets out of control.

A potato, out of all things... That would be a tragic death indeed ;-)
Once I almost choked on a pringle, but thank heavens someone slapped me on the back real hard (ouch). So I`m still here, making (apparantly infuriating) jokes about weight issues on the other side of the globe...

If I might be so bold as to ask, why specifically a potato?

I`m sorry, but as a dancer myself I can see the complexity of the choreography, but I still find it extremely lame... It`s like dancing, but for people who can`t be arsed to hoist their lazy asses off the couch.
Hey, it could be a big hit in the US!!

Nothing to do with ireland.... it`s not irish, and riverdance was designed by an American (flatley is from chicago)to appeal to the idiots out there who think they`re Irish because some distant grandparent was... well here`s the news.... this is nothing to do with Irish culture whatsoever.... and if you do not hold an Irish passpost you are not Irish... if you still think you are, then answer me this.... cen fa a cheapain tu e?

@ Kadinsky: Some shmuck decided to call it "Irish" hand dancing because the two people in the video were originally with Riverdance.

It`s a neat video, but you get the idea after about ten seconds, making this video 2:10 too long.
