I`m not like either of them. I like lean muscle, speed and stamina. People like type 2 from this pic are usually not fast and agility is very important for me. Not because I don`t want to get hit, that`s why I also value stamina. Of course, I`d try to dodge or block an attack but agility is very important for many other things, including speed of attacks(and I`m very, very fast at that). Overall, what I`m trying to say is, I wouldn`t try to be either of these two types, but an agile and fast, yet strong and durable type.

Also you can spend plenty of time at the gym as long as you don`t body build and starve yourself.

I always liked the square shape. People that look like they spend too much time at the gym or just making muscle for shows just look horrible and unnatural.

i`m square and recognized as a strong guy,my body shape maybe is out of fashion style but i have a friend whit V shape and he have spinal problem. In a strong test i will allways win against him. So womens follow your pure instinct and seek the reals "STRONG" mans and leave the V shaped to extinction...XD

I was trying to say dratload (f*ckload, I hope that one works at least), and put "f-v-c-k-load" and it said "I am a pretty pretty little girlload"

I think I`d fit into the second category if I got rid of a bit of flab.

"rectangular shape = work out your lats more, there`s no reason not to have a v taper unless you flat out don`t want one."

And why would you want one? Quite often you don`t use your arms, especially in lifting stuff. And if you`re going for a fight, then you don`t necessarily need a crapload of upper body strength. Look at Brazilian jujitsu or kickboxing or something. Personally I did kung fu, and a bit of braz. jujit. so in a fight I`d probably tend towards kicks (which is what I prefered with kung fu) to the legs or punches to other weak points and maybe a bit of grappling.

"people that build up from mostly isometric exercise DO concentrate on fashionable physique and are not able to keep up high output for long periods."

You are confusing two different kinds of muscle tissue - slow twitch and fast twitch. One generates greater strength for a shorter period, the other generates less strength but for a longer period. Developing either will result increased mass - just look at the legs of competition cyclists.

"Every time you see a guy on t.v. pulling a truck or lifting massive amounts of weight, he invariably resembles the second figure more than the first."

Powerlifters are a specialized category of athelete. They build a bulky core to counterbalance the weight they intend to lift. It doesn`t mean they are stronger.

Dancers, and male dancers in particular, routinely lift another human being over their heads for extended periods of time, tend to the v-shape. Swimmers, who pull their own mass through the water at high speed, are a mixed bag, though tending more to the v than the rectangle, though height is the biggest physical factor.
Linemen in american football pack on bulk mass not for strength, but to make themselves harder to move - and pay for it with higher rates of heart disease.

Different kinds of strength training favor different builds, but it doesn`t indicate that one particular build, least of all the barrel body advocated in the image

@Dead Cow: Just because they may not be big and bulky, doesn`t mean they aren`t fit. The drawings are all about how to draw your own characters, so watching a large number of different bodies in motion gives you a better idea of what variety there is, and therefore you should show in your own artwork. Otherwise you end up drawing a bunch of guys who all look the same when they have their shirts off, regardless of body size.

Iggy Pop tends to have his shirt off a lot when performing, and he does have the rectangular body type for his musculature. So watching him move gives an artist a reference for when he/she draws a person with a similar body type.

@TKD_Master You just proved the fact is correct. Just because the guy is flexing his back muscles means nothing. Look at his lower torso where his legs meet, it is a rectangular shape, not a triangular shape.

@kw112 I myself was a body builder for a while. I will tell you this, when competing in competitions you do indeed starve yourself and dehydrate so that way your skin is more taunt giving you more definition.

People, please do not speak on topics you know nothing about. I use to be a body builder and those facts are 100% true, want to know the kick in the ass? When I started doing MMA I had to gain fat and work out differently to improve my strength because building muscle for show, is not the same as building muscle for strength.

"... i dont think you can call anyone with 95% muscle "weak"..."
From experince (it used to be a gag in my group of friends to put gym guys together with regulars and watch gym guys complain,) people that build up from mostly isometric exercise DO concentrate on fashionable physique and are not able to keep up high output for long periods.
Your dad may not be able to cling and jerk like your brother-in-law, but he can probably take a day of toting 50lb bags with less complaint.

At first I was always intimidated by going to the gym and doing weights with all the bigger guys (not walking on the treadmill with all the girls on their cell phones) and then I realized... all of them had huge upper bodies and the tinest legs I had ever seen. I laughed really hard when I could leg press more than the big guy before me.

sort of true and untrue at the same time. my brother in law is a personal trainer so hes got that "mr. universe" body type only toned down just a bit. but i dont think anyone in a million years would call him dehydrated or starving. he just eats several small healthy meals throughout the day. (what your supposed to do to gain muscle and loose fat).
My dad on the other hand is the strongman type (also toned down a bit). He is probably 85 to 90 percent muscle (hes old so its wearing down a bit). all built up from working construction over the years. but all in all my dad may only have a very slight power advantage from his strongman build over my brother in law. not as drastic as the thing says. i dont think you can call anyone with 95% muscle "weak" or "useless".

It was probably created by some redneck who has never been inside a real gym since he was a center on the high school junior varsity football team.

Both are from the gym. Working hard in some manual labor job isn`t necessarily going to get you the strongman competition look.

Diet and genetics are as much a factor in determining the shape of your body as your work-out routine. Ectomorph, endomorph, and mesomorph are helpful terms in understanding body types. Typically the mesomorph is going to gain the ectangular look, while the ectomorph will get more of a triangular look.
