LOL.....I remember when the myspace junkies were saying the same trash about facebook before it came out. Trends are so comical, you really just have to laugh.

I`ll join, I don`t like the problems with security that Facebook has had in the past and would like to see how well this one handles.

Just as a note though. Diaspora goes OPEN SOURCE on Sep. 15th it does NOT open to consumers till sometime in October. See their post on it at:

and read the adendum posted at the bottom.http://www.joindiaspora.com/2010/08/26/overdue-update.html

sounds lame.....Coming up as the "Anti-anything" is always a desperate attempt at success as an "all or nothing" scenario!

Is MySpace not cool ? Facebook is the new thing ?

I too fail to understand how Diaspora is in any way anti-Semitic.

I think it might work. Just because it`s linked to other websites does not mean that it cannot be outdone. It has potential. Also, how is the spreading of something that was localized anti semetic?? The name makes sense.

I don`t see Facebook being overthrown like MySpace and Friendster. It has become far too integrated in the internet. Most major websites allow you to sign in with Facebook and have linking options. The best way to get people better security is awareness raising websites like youropenbook and pleaserobme, as well as that torrent that security company released with every facebook user`s publicly available data.
Security measures are only a deterrent. Anyone with enough determination can access your data. People need to learn that they need to limit what data they put online.

Diaspora; the dispersion or spreading of something that was originally localized (as a people or language or culture)

If they don`t at least split facebook users in half they could just turn their site into a Jewish facebook, otherwise their name is stupid.

Why the HELL is it called Diaspora?!

The Anti-Semitic Facebook, yaay!

@MauserTM,

The CEO of facebook probably did that just to mock them as their system won`t work... People are sick and tired of always changing social networks. I doubt my entire family would follow me onto a new network. This is stupid, just be careful of what you put online, no matter WHAT you put, it belongs to the internet.

Well I`m quite curious. I`ll probably try it out.

Oh and JUGGALETTEx0, really? I only have 180 friends on facebook and of those I only ever talk to about half.

Why in the hell do you need more than 5,000 friends?

"Open Source also means that you can verify, in the source, that they are not collecting sensible data about you. That the privacy they offer is REAL and not just a joke"

How do they intend on making any money off of the website if they don`t collect data for advertising? Maybe I am understanding this wrong? I personally don`t care if Facebook collects my data, as long as they are not providing it to third parties. As I understand it right now they display adds to you on Facebook if you fit a target demographic but the third party never knows who you are or recieves your information.

Maybe because we`re a bunch of jews they`re trying to lore away from our homeland of Facebook.

Diaspora will be Open Source. That`s why Facebook`s CEO donated to it: if they come with some astounding new ideas and applications, Facebook will implement them for free (or almost for free).
Open Source also means that you can verify, in the source, that they are not collecting sensible data about you. That the privacy they offer is REAL and not just a joke.
Those of you who don`t understand this, DESERVE to continue using facebook. Have fun.

I`m intrigued. I don`t take social networking sites "fer serious" anyways and i am no way loyal to any of them. I still have my myspace and use it daily and have used it since 2006. I use my facebook on a daily basis as well. I like both of them but for different reasons. As for twitter...ehh i don`t have one because between myspace and facebook i don`t need another site that`s sole purpose is just for updating.

Yeah, somehow I don`t think this is going to become the "New Facebook" because quite honestly not that many people care about their privacy. None of my friends do. Plus if you set your privacy settings accordingly, you`re pretty safe.

If you live in Diaspora you`ve been exiled and can`t return to where you belong. At least that`s what I think it means.

It`ll probably not be as successful as Facebook.

I mean, Facebook has its claws in just about every website right now.

Is it only Facebook that has this security concern with user info and such? Does MySpace have this problem or any of the other sites that I don`t know the names of?

Because I don`t really see a need to make an anti-Facebook (anti, despite it`s many similarities to it...) when an alternative already exists.

Facebook will crush it, not enough people will bother to create whole new accounts for something that sounds like nothing but a facebook clone. Plus its marketing couldn`t have been too great if it comes out in 3 days and not many people have heard of it. The only benefit seems the privacy settings, which are adequate on other sites. After all if somethings THAT private then why in the name of christ are you posting it on the internet in the first place?

It won`t crush Facebook, too many people are loyal to Facebook (including myself), and this probably won`t get enough coverage or advertising as Facebook does.

The only reason I use Facebook is everyone else uses it, so it`s the easiest way to stay in touch with people. No applications or "liking" a billion things for me, mostly just messaging. So if everyone else jumped over to this Diaspora site, I would too, because then that would be the most convenient. Until then I have no need for one.
