    Wow - really?
The film makers have got some nerve trying to make atheists big villains. Nobody I know has ever complained about Christmas just being there - I love Christmas. Are we evil because we use the time to be with family instead of worshiping some man in the sky?
Good job, extremist Catholics - you continue to be the ones attacking us.

Why Catholics? I think it`s just extremist Christians in general, and seeing how this is from the US, it`s most likely extremist Protestants...

"Frankly, The only reason I think this got posted was for the inevitable flame war."

Christmas, like so many other Christian holidays, has it`s roots in two places. One, the Christian reason for the season, and two, the pagan reason for the season. The tree, Santa, and everything NOT seen in the manger, is pagan based, and is not part of the Christian faith, but is still very much part of Christmas. EVERYONE can celebrate that part of Christmas, regardless of your religion. The love, the peace, the sharing that goes with the Christmas time of year is for EVERYONE. Yes, Christ in the Manger is purely Christian in nature (duh!), but the rest of it can be enjoyed by all of us.

Also, to put my two cents in on this video- I`m goddamn tired of Christians acting like people are trying to tell them they can`t celebrate Christmas just because they point out that it`sunconstitutional for a GOVERNMENT building to put up Christmas decorations- no one in their right mind would argue against private businesses or individuals putting up Christmas decorations.

Lol, that`s funny as it is bad. Most Christians don`t realize that christmas holiday is a pagan holiday taken over by the the Roman Church. And if the fundies really wanted paganism out of the holiday, out goes the christmas tree, gift giving, and the `feast` ie the turkey dinner. All of these pertain the the god of Saturn and the Winter solstice.

Long live fundamentalist Hypocrisy! The lord deceiver.

I think this is just as bad as Christians putting up propaganda. So, you don`t have a belief in a God, why shove it down our throats? More then half of America is Christian, so yes, during Christmas time there will be a lot of Christmas stuff. Along with other holiday stuff. Get over it.

"So, you don`t have a belief in a God, why shove it down our throats?"

They`re not... quite the opposite infact... no body is shoving anything anywhere for the time being... By supporting or endorsing, if you will, only one religion, the government and/or large corporations are limiting their audience. The Establishment Clause under the first amendment outlaws the American gov`t from establishing a national religion. On the other hand, companies say "Happy Holidays" voluntarily so that they do not lose customers. There`s no reason to get upset because other people want to make EVERYONE feel involved during the holidays. That`s the christian thing to do, no? I`m an atheist and I LOVE the winter holidays!!! Let everyone be involved!

In my city, there`s no "Merry Christmas" for government owned/public places (it`s "Happy Holidays"). For private business or property though, people can put up whatever they want.
But even if there`s no writing, or it says "Happy Holidays", the decorations are still traditional Christmas ones (candy canes, green and red bows, bells, ect.)

Brimstone : all the Christians I know are well aware of the pagan origins of Christmas. We still choose to celebrate the good in it.
NottaSpy - when I was in high school, the head of a large non-denominational Christian group came out against having religious organisations holding their meetings in the public schools. Everybody was AGHAST that he would NOT be in favor of it. Years later, there was an interview with him (as he was leaving his post) in the local paper. He said the reason he was against it was because a cult was spearheading the effort, and the same people complaining about him not being for it, would be the same people having heart attacks if the cult was in the school. If the door is open, it has to be open for EVERYBODY, and I, a Christian, for one would not be against a Ramadan or a Jewish or any other celebration on public property if a Christmas one was held.

Pagan means every religion that is not yours/Christianity.
Christmas comes from Hanukkah (Jewish), from the Egyptians who had the last three days of the year partying for the return of the sun. The Germans and the Gauls had the spruce for returning of the light. And Jesus represents the light for Christians. The Catholic Church just put it altogether in a way to please every body in the world (Europe back then, or Roman Empire)

I`m Atheist and spend every Christmas with my family, I even buy gifts and put up decorations. The holiday is less about a religious tiding than a corporate/capitalist takeover every year (that doesn`t mean you can`t enjoy it though).

As for religious symbols in public, it doesn`t bother me at all so long as there isn`t a chiding or diatribe attached to it like "Repent or burn in hell" or something.

    Here`s my thing.
If I own a private business, I reserve the right to display "Merry Christmas! God bless us all."
If your a public business, then you should display "Seasons Greetings" or whatever.
If you are an individual, regardless of whether you are in a public or private business (or whether you are working there) you should say what ever winter season greeting you want. Whether that be happy holidays or merry christmas.

People who get THAT upset by you saying merry christmas really need to grow up. I`ve had people say "Happy Hanukkah" to me and I didn`t take offense. I just said thanks, merry christmas. Big deal. If you dont want to celebrate it, suck it up. It doesn`t mean that we can`t have a manger or whatever in a public place if the majority of townspeople want it there.

Since the midwinter festival has had so many different things mashed together into it, maybe we should split them up and let people take their pick:

Christ`s Mass. OK, so early Christian leaders blatantly usurped existing Roman religious festivals in order to gain more power and the midwinter festival actually has nothing at all to do with Christianity in any way. But they`ve stuck with their made-up date for the last ~1700 years, so they may as well keep with it. Any day of the year works, may as well have that one.

Other religious festivals. Loads of them. Midwinter features in no end of religions.

Secular midwinter festival. People have been celebrating it for millenia. Middle of winter, how dreary...but the days are getting longer now...party time!

Buying crap festival. Hallmark Day or something. In other words, modern Christmas.

"As long as they would, In turn, Tolerate my Christmas decorations, and my neighbors Hanukkah celebration, I`d have no problem with that."

We atheists don`t care about your home decorations! But would you be Ok with walking into a courthouse with Quranic text on the wall over the judge`s bench? Or if your child was taught the story of muhammad every winter rather than that of jesus`s birth? We only care about the public places that belong to all americans - what you do on your own property is your business.

Doesn`t matter. This is just another attempt to vilify atheists to people who already think they`re evil. I`m sure this is on right after the 700 Club.

No one cares what us Atheists think about Christmas, other than to imagine that we want to destroy it. If there is a War on Christmas, though, it ain`t us fighting it. It`s a lot of guys in suits worried about that $20 that might walk out the door of their chain of stores because a non-Christian got offended.

I`m in favor of a good portion of the holiday, myself. It`s really just too bad we have to set aside one time each year to actually think about helping those in need. So embrace what`s good, ignore what`s bad. Drop a nickel in the bucket. Give some toys to the marines and make a kid happy. Try to ignore the pope calling you the source of all evil, despite the fact that between he and I only one of us has a throne made of gold in our house.

aw jeez. i have no problem with people displaying nativity scenes and whatnot on public property, it`s no skin off my nose. the separation of church and state really only means the state cannot promote a religion or specifically sponsor a religion. i don`t think they should remove any religious items from public grounds, but offer to erect other items if asked. for example, in jesusville, peter paul puts up a nativity scene on public property. mr. muhammad muslimilla comes along and says he is offended. the town government offers to erect a ramadan display but refuses to take down the nativity scene. THAT to me is sufficient separation of church and state.

    quote adamslily:

don`t mean to butt in here, but would quoting a famous author in a public display be offensive? if you are truly atheist, wouldn`t non-judgmental displays of religion be comparable to a quote from a novel?

personally i think it would be great if all religions that had something decent to say (for example, religious quotes that promote committing a crime wouldn`t be acceptable) could be displayed on public grounds. i think it would be kind of neat to have quotes from the qu`ran and the bible and the new testament. it would show america is accepting of all faiths. <

It wasn`t even our holiday to begin with, and yeah I agree-it`s like what I said before once... are people really defending it because they think it`s a `Christian` holiday, or are they just defending the presents and booze?? If Christmas became a holiday about just celebrating Christ`s birth and no gifts were involved, how many would actually consider it a priority in their lives to take time to celebrate it? Probably very few. Peh....

    Thank you, r3tr0r0ck3r.

May I just say, as an Atheist, that I do not despise Christianity, or Christian tradition. I respect the beliefs of other people, and I realize that Christmas is no more `garbage` than the breakfast I am currently eating. I believe in the spirit of the happiness it gives off, and although I do not believe in Jesus, I support Christmas for instilling a sense of much needed peace in the human population, year after year. Christmas, although I don`t agree with the backstory, is a good thing.

    It`s morons I don`t like.

Christmas has turned into a hypocrisy, just like every other religious holiday. People are supposed to celebrate the life of Christ on Christmas, but instead, they worship some non-existent guy in a red suit and consume, consume, consume. True Christians shouldn`t even celebrate Christmas as it is in its current form.

    FTR, I`m agnostic.

    Two things:
First, Christians STOLE the Winter Solstice from the pagans and made it their own holiday. So they are hypocrites.

Second, this movie looks terrible, I can`t believe that Jefferson from Married...With Children would stoop so low.
