Yeah rather boring - got through 2 min before I decided that given her poor elocution and complete lack of diction she probably didn`t do too well on those tests she was complaining about.

I`m glad that girl never went to school in France or in Asia!! The American school system is way more open than most other countries and lets people choose much more their own path. American university is much more enjoyable than université in France or some schools in china, korea or japan.

Although I entirely agree with her opinion and views, she`s still pretty lucky to have gone through that system. Only problem is that you need to spend THOUSANDS of dollars to get "that piece of paper", whereas most european and asian countries have free school or at very low attending costs.

She`s right in many respects. I did absolutely awesome in school only because I was the best at doing what I`m told to do. I think she`s trying to say that all people have value no matter what their specialties are and that is definitely something I believe in.

What she is saying is that the public education systems wants students to conform, not question the status quo, and has no room for the uniqueness that we are. She questions what did she truly learn other than excel at her skill to memorize and though she is #1 in her class what good is that in real life if all she can do is memorize and be a sheep.

The best teachers that I have had tested you not on what you know but what you don`t know(because yes, you have to have some sense of measurement) and adjusted their curriculum accordingly. e.g. if a high percentage of students missed the same question/section of a test, the teacher did not adequetly teach that section. I agree in a pass/fail system. Either you grasp the subject or you don`t. Can you converse about an issue or just spout out stats? What does school truly prepare you for sans the basics e.g. learning how to read, basic math skills? Why must you take 4 years of advanced math if you are an art major?

I honestly cannot see where the hate is coming from. I would be more concerned that you cannot focus for 10 minutes without being bored. Okay, hence the I-A-M. Doesn`t it concern you that she is the school`s top student yet has not mastered public speaking? Now THAT is a skill to use in the real world.

I don`t understand why her speech got such overwhelmingly negative comments.

To meepmaker: What makes her ungrateful? the fact that she could have be born without such opportunities? This might be the case but it does not mean she does not realize that. Its as if you are insisting that the world is as good as it is going to get. I admire that she is looking to the future, where things can be better than they are now IF WE WANT THEM TO BE. I`m glad she can look to a future shed of traditionalism.

To Gerry1of1: I seriously doubt you caught the points she was making. She never once said no one should have goals. Yeah just everyone sit around and do what they want. No. She was pointing out that schooling is flawed. The entire system is flawed. But I suppose its just too hard for anyone here to comprehend that.

I happen to agree with every point she made.Theres needs to be more people like her around if we`re going to live in a better place any time soon.

If she really believed what she is saying then she would not have worked so hard to ace all her tests. This is an attention whore trying to show off how clever she is by treating this speech as a debate topic in which she is defending a position she does not actually hold.

Nice try, but did you actually listen to the speech at all? She made it clear that she had gone through school not knowing any of these things until recently.

She sounds like a paranoid conspiracy theorist... clandestine efforts to minimize future achievements? What purpose would that serve? The under-performing students, more frequently than not, under-perform because they do not wish to do any work and would rather spend that time doing drugs or otherwise wasting their time, not because the system works against them and pigeon-holes them into that position, but because they choose so. The people who want to make something of themselves are willing to put in the hard work so they may learn something and make a difference in the world. The choice is entirely up to the student.
Opportunities are out there for kids to explore their passions, and never is the school hindering their efforts by brainwashing them to act as robots. The suggestions she seems to be making, like non-compulsory schooling, would wind up being detrimental to society. The students who wanted to improve themselves still would, and the one who didn`t want to do any work.

Couldn`t make it more than a minute. She is terrible at giving a speech. On the other hand, though, I do agree that people focus more on getting the diploma than learning the information.

This the reason I have not been back to college since leaving: I learned more out of the classroom than I ever did in it.

Self righteous bitch. Really though I wouldn`t want to be lectured about a speech which it can be boiled into two parts: "the system is wrong" and "actually learn poo instead of learning for the test" Second part yeah our school system is crappy, but I`m not sure of the solution of no dates because that is removing the introduction to the real world aspect of school. Yeah you have no life no our problem.

i love this girl. i want to be a teacher, and we`re constantly drilled in at the university i go to that it is not going to be easy; we are going into a system that is against anything but learning towards standardized tests. i`m glad she shamed the teachers behind her, and spoke to the parents and kids while she could. i wish i had had such an opportunity.

if it was in writing, that`s different. but speaking? pathetic.
