Yep, this is an actual published childrens" book. We weep for the future.

Was xylophone too hard? Kids use computers and cell phones, both with spell-check, so I would expect them to know how to look up the proper spelling of a word, even if they prefer to use net jargon.

How did that get published? I`m not worried for my generation at all i`m worried for the generation who wrote this book, and I`m geussing that this came from the same generation responsible for the Gulf Oil Spill.

Ok that`s a lie, I am worried about my generation, but not about what we`ll do to the environment, and associating species.

They had a chart like this on the WALL when I was a kid. I remember thinking how dumb it was - and that one day, when I grew up, I would post a comment on the net about how the lazy bastard that made it could have easily used xylophone, x-ray, xenon, Xerox, Xanadu or some other word that actually started with an "x" instead of posting fail on a classroom wall.

Yeah...except that the mammoth wasn`t a dinosaur. Also, you know, the freakin YAK on the next page isn`t a dinosaur either.

X is for Exasperating.

To be fair, they have been throwing around the Xylophones and X-Rays way too much, they need new X-words. Somewhere out there is a kid`s book that says "X is for xxxteens.com" (No I haven`t checked that URL, I`d say it`s a pretty safe guess at what it is though.)

@bmh

Just because a lot of books do it doesn`t make it right. It is drating idiotic. I can think of ten words that begin with X off the top of my head, using a word that starts with E is not excusable. Or do you want me to start calling it "xcuzable"?
0
Reply
Female 248
Okay, very few words in the English language begin with X. A lot of alphabet books use words beginning with "ex" instead of "x". Its pretty common (yes, I have read more than my fair share of alphabet books).

Well, I guess they got sick of X is for xylophone and X is for X-ray - about the only X-words in a young readers vocabulary. I can`t imagine "X is for xenolith" or "X is for xanthochroid" holding much meaning for a 3-year-old.

@danmw No. Children is plural. That`s the end. There is no "super-plural." It`s not like the word "people," that has a singular meaning and a plural meaning. "People" is unique in that way because it was historically and etymologically a singular word, from the Latin "populus," a singular word meaning "a group of persons ethnically or socially related to one another." In English, we can say "There were 20 people there," but also "The various peoples of Africa . . ." In most other languages related to Latin, they maintain the distinction between between "people" and "persons." I think it`s a useful distinction.

There might be a few more words like "people," but "children" isn`t among them. Just like we don`t say "various mices," "various geeses," etc.

@Anarchist LOL. That`s good. What make`s it better is that there is no dash is "Le-a." That`s a hyphen. In fact there is no such thing as a "dash." There are a few different types of dashes, the most common being the en dash "–" and the em dash "—" (there are also the double- and triple-em dashes, but those are very rare). I realize that most people don`t care and just call either a dash without qualification, but it makes an important typographical difference. The en dash is pretty much only used for ranges, while the em dash is used for much more. The hyphen joins parts of hyphenated words (obviously), but also connects different parts of multiple-word adjectives, and breaks words across lines (which most people are familiar with as well).

If you bombard a child with false information, it probably wouldn`t make his/her brain any less efficient. Sure they will be walking around with dumb ideas(Christians, Muslims, Statists), but that doesn`t mean they`re dumb.

If anything it might make them smarter once they realize the falsehood. I say this because when a child realize that an archon gave them false information they might more frequently begin to think for themselves and come to their own conclusions. Rather than always using information from the top down and hardly ever practicing critical thinking skills.

An anarchist can be dumb because they probably were never indoctrinated with the idea of government. An atheist can be dumb because they probably were never indoctrinated with the idea of god. Intellectuals on the other hand, would be less prone to such bullsh*t.

While we`re on the subject of typos in the post (I notice that the week has been corrected), it would be "children`s book." Since the word children, while plural, does not end in s, it gets an apostrophe s just like any other word that doesn`t end in s.
