When I first saw it I thought it was just some odd foliage growing on the tree, and then the guy touched it and I retched a little bit.

There are three different types of invertebrates nicknamed "Daddy longlegs". One of which is the harvestmen.

"Taken straight from the description on youtube. Now, that being said, i submit G O L D E N links to this website, none of which are reposts. and users routinely get away with ridiculously trivial errors and reposts. Why, OH WHY do you do this to me I-A-B?! are my links not turtle enough for your turtle club?"
Hey, I`m the guy who wrote that description. I just posted that for some reason I thought this was Poland rather than Arizona. The video`s setting didn`t particularly matter since the entire video was one shot of a mass of insects on a tree, rather than a geography-based documentary. Also, my mistake was already corrected several pages ago. Perhaps you should read comments before posting. If that is done correctly and you lose your sense of elitism then maybe you won`t look like such an idiot next time you complain about something so pointless.

harvestmen and daddy long legs are two totally different spiders... This is a true daddy long leg... they have the spider body... harvestmen have the circle body and are not considered to be actual spiders, just arachnids

It`s very interesting that these are arachnids but NOT spiders and they have no venom glands or silk glands. They are also a very old taxonomic family, At least 400 million years, And are relatively unchanged since then.

They also appear to be rare enough to qualify for `endangered` status. So please don`t kill or disturb them.

No, all my worst nightmares come to life would be far worse than this. Replace those daddy long-legs with Funnel-Webs, Red-Backs, white-tails, or any of those big-arse, hairy, drat-off venomous spiders, and yes I would ruin my pants and run.

@Jade - thanks, I wasn`t particularly afraid of daddy long-legs before, and now I am even less. Another myth busted.

My cousin and I once caught a mass of daddy longlegs similar to the mass in the clip (we were 8). There weren`t nearly as many as the one shown, but there were quite a few, all the same. We caught them in a glass jar and, as they struggled, we noticed a clear fluid running down the sides of the glass. The smell was horrible. Like slowly burning battery acid. We assumed it was their poison and we released the arachnids. Thereupon we tried to make poison darts to unleash on the unfriendly trees surrounding us. (We liked our pets too much and this was the country, so, no bratty neighbor kids.) Later, I discovered that the foul smelling liquid wasn`t poison (daddy longlegs don`t have any poison - debunking a fantastic myth.) It was a defensive secretion. Too bad - that tree had what was coming to him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opiliones

@davymid

Harvestmen (Opiliones), unlike spiders, have interesting and recurring eusocial behaviours.
There have been many articles about their aggregations in the last years and many more aggregations of this kind are being observed and reported.

It is a very interesting field of research for those who can overcome the phobia and appreciate the mysterious beauty of the phenomenon.

The mythbusters claimed to have busted that myth - however they tested that theory with cellar spiders which are in the same family as these but not the same species as daddy long legs. They have yet to revisit it tho I think...

Gerry10f1, a scorpion has 8 legs too but it is not a spider.
Spiders have 8 legs and the body divided in two segments: cephalotorax and abdomen.
Opiliones have 8 legs and an unsegmented body, so they are not true spiders.
They are Arachnids but not Araneae.

Those are NOT spiders. And not Daddy-long-legs:
Daddy-long-legs are true spiders that belong to the Pholcidae family and the order Araneae.

Those in the video are Harvestmen, they are Arachnids but not spiders, and belong to the order Opiliones.

Domisgood - Atleast in eastern US what`s in the video is referred to as "Daddy long leggers" or "daddy longlegs" and we call what I believe you to be talking about Crane Flys or Mosquito hawks - I guess it`s probably just variances in regional jargon differences and whatnots.

defiythelie - People in the U.K call the crane fly a daddy long-legs. I wasn`t aware that in other countries people call other insects (and a spider) daddy long-legs but daddy long-legs in the U.K do have wings.

Whether or not they called crane flies in other countries daddy long-legs I don`t know.
