Welcome to Israel, where a large opaque sheet of fabric covering your body is considered sexually deviant and where a judge can force you to divorce.

Baal, you have your head buried in the sand. One more point - Muslim men, per the Koran, are allowed to rape their wives. Granted, it hasn`t been that long ago in the western world that our courts caught up to evil of that, but still.

Either the UK Telegraph has partnered with The Onion, or just another repetitious example of "religion fail"

(I kinda hope it`s both)

@baal,

Why should there even need to be 3 witnesses to a rape? Why can`t the woman who cried rape and the medical practitioner who examined her suffice?

Let them do what they want. Who cares?

Not even Jordan or Syria fall into the category.

@Baal

I`m with you on this one. I`ve heard people rant against Muslim countries before. They all seem to be in this category of anti-Christian, anti-Jew, and anti-decency. For Turkey that simply isn`t the case.

@Gerry1of1

I`d hit that! lulz.

That`s not to say there isn`t a problem in the ME, but seriously, it`s like blaming the Irish for traffic. Yes, OK, I`m sure a couple of people in traffic might be Irish, that doesn`t make them "the problem".

Look. Any reasonable comparison of Muslim countries to non Muslim countries comes up with similar results.

The human race can be pretty despicable. Worldwide the upper limit on how many women are raped or sexually abused is 30%. 30%! That`s insane, and revolting that we can live in a world that disgusting.

Is the Middle East the problem? No. The highest rates are South America, and South Africa. Which incidentally have some of the highest prostitution rates, rather than Burqa rates.

But somehow you`ve taken this as an opportunity to pick on a specific group, who don`t factor anywhere in this equation. Even extremely high end estimates put the Middle East problem below the world average. (Go ahead, find the highest stats you can for any Middle Eastern country. Amnesty estimates, feminist group estimates, anything). You`re not solving anything. You`re just promoting a stereotype that hides the problem.

I`ve already pretty much answered your slightly warped view on the matter in my reply to Sarah, including the four male witnesses fallacy.
First, male is not a prerequisite (nor do male witnesses count as two, and in the case of adultery, an accused woman`s testimony counts as more than 3 male witnesses).
Second, a medical practitioner can attest as a witness. Witness doesn`t mean "has seen the events".
Third it`s not four witnesses. (It`s 3)
Fourth, your analysis of repercussions is false (as stated to Sarah).
Finally your turn: What`s your excuse for why men are "very very very very very" unlikely to be convicted. I already showed that no European or American system fares much better. The UK has an 0.7% lead on the Middle East Average. That`s enough for you to shut your eyes and point fingers to a "Muslim" problem instead of a world one?

The same can be said of the UK where "40% of Brits are in favor of rape" according to the newspapers a couple of years ago based on a study. This is of course utter bullpoo and those statistics were completely warped before being turned into a headline.

The questions asked were basically "Do you think women are more likely to be raped if drunk". The answer to that, factually, is yes. 40% of people answered yes.

The headlines termed this as them being "pro-rape".

Now, of course the British public (mostly) picked up on this for the bullpoo it was. Unfortunately, when the same bullpoo is espoused about Muslim countries, the same bullpoo detectors go into hibernate mode.

There was one case in Saudi, and one in the UAE in the last 5 years, where a girl was punished after being raped for a crime, NOT as it was widely reported in the press FOR being raped.

Under Sharia law (legal system of Islam) there has to be four male witnesses to a rape. Which is why men are very very very very very unlikely to be convicted. But when a woman cries `rape`, she has admitted to having sex. UNLAWFUL sex. Seeing as how she WASN`T raped, i.e. no four witnesses, she has committed adultery, and can be stoned by the authorities, or killed to protect the `honor` of her family. (These `honor` killings are beginning to happen more and more frequently in the U.S., as the Muslim population here rises.) OF COURSE MUSLIM COUNTRIES HAVE A LOW RAPE RATE. Sheeesh.

I didn`t claim to be an expert, I just repeated what I might have heard some where. Also, from the facts you just listed, you`re saying a very small number of men are punished for rape. From what I`ve heard, women are much, much more likely to be punished for being raped, because so man believe it`s their fault.
Basically, if it`s a respectable woman everyone agrees is righteous and not a slut, then the man gets punished severely for violating a good woman. But they believe most women who get raped are sluts and had it coming to begin with, and are even bigger sluts just for "letting" it happen.

"Think about it"

Erm... Ok then.

Now, you`ll of course note that these are reported rapes, and then go on to invent numbers, but keep in mind that`s what you`re doing.

The facts are always going to fit your opinions if you pull them from the same orifice.

1) The conviction rate in the ME is low (5%), however this is comparable with much of western Europe (5-8%), and America`s 13% conviction rates. (UK is 5.7%)
2) The punishments are severe. Death penalty, to castration, to chemical neutering are not uncommon. Overall, for every rape in the UK, someone will spend about 40 hours in prison. In the Mid East, for every rape you`re looking at 3 years (counting a death sentence as a life sentence), and the loss of part of a nut.

allow me to share a jewish joke i think is strangely appropriate here: moses goes to the top of mount sinai, ready to receive gods words. God descends and says to him "you shall not cook a calf in its mothers milk", to which moses replies, "I see! So we must not cook any meat in milk to prevent such an occurance. God reiterates "you shall not cook a calf in its mothers milk", to which moses replies, "I get it now, you don`t want us to serve meat with milk at all, so that they never need touch". God reiterates again: "you shall not cook a calf in its mothers milk", to which moses replies a third time, "You are so wise. Not only must we seperate the foods, but not even the utensils with which we eat them with touch, so that no meat or milk will ever come into contact. To this God says: "You know what, do it your way."

I am a conservative Jew and this joke was told to me by my uncle (an orthodox jew) at a bar mitzvah so

Think about it. The more women hide their femininity and sexuality to extremes, the more extremes the men are driven to just to get it. Rape is extremely common in places where burkas are extremely common, and of course those rapists will tell you it`s the women`s fault, but that`s another matter.
Sometimes, I just plain hate the human race, and the burka is a major reason why.

`What ever thing I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add to it, nor diminish from it.`

(D`varim 12:32)

Makes sense to me why the Ultra-Orthodox Rabbinate would want to ban it...in a convoluted sort of way.

But seriously, religious Jews already must abide by such a vast and ever-growing labrinth of strictures, is it really necessary to bring down the hammer on this? At least they`re preserving their modesty!
