Very propaganda-ish, but it probably would be better to be able to tax it rather than spending money criminalizing it.

thetas, do you not buy vegetables from the grocery store? I have a decent sized garden and still buy fruits and vegetables from the grocery store. I love mangos but i cant grow them in Michigan, and i cant grow tomatoes year round. Sure i could go out and buy a few 1000w hps lamps and fancy hydro stuff and grow tomatoes year round, but its more cost effective to go to the grocery store when i cant grow them.

I didn`t drink before I tried weed. In fact weed was my reason for avoiding alcohol up until now when I realized I actually like beer but the hard poo, not so much.

Now the only negative effects of weed I feel after quitting are not the regressive addictive I-gotta-have-it feelings but simply that I can`t get a good career job or join the military because I was caught with a roach of a joint. It`s getting to the point where I should just start smoking again, why should I stop smoking something I love if my past use of it is always going to follow me...might as well keep it as a present usage. I haven`t felt so unproductive in my life and weed isn`t contributing to that feeling.

drug laws are stupid, period. i`ve never known one substance abuser, of any substance that let the law decide if they were going to do drugs or not. Theres not one pothead out there who smokes it illegally who this one day, "Maybe I`m not gonna do it cause its Illegal" let alone coke heads, tweakers, e-tards, etc. All drug laws do is fill up prisons that we have to pay for with taxpayer money. Legalize and tax ALL drugs.

I`m against the larger drug/gang/smuggling industry and the crime that goes with it.

Keep it illegal and educate our children so that they don`t become addicts and fuel the demand for it. Life today is demanding and kids need to learn to live by higher standards, Otherwise we will continue to have to immigrate scientists, doctors, and others to meet our future needs.

All we do now is waste money trying to fight it and in the process give organized crime a source of income.

Also if we could prduce hemp(which wont get you high) we could make paper from it which is far more effective than paper from wood it`s also beter than cotton for clothing. We`ve known this for a long time in fact during WW2 they encouraged farmers to get special licenses to grow it because it was needed so badly.

Weed companies will not manufacture poo weed if legalized. Think about it, the standard of weed nowadays is ultra high, and cannabis genetics and strain breeding is an established industry. No company selling shwag would be able to compete with street dealers selling Kush or blues.
Naturally the standard of weed would have to be higher at worst on par with weed around already to make a buisness viable otherwise customers could just grow their own. Meaning you`d more than likely be able to go to your local off license and pick up a pack of 20 super lemon haze`s *drool*

I should think so. Employers are allowed to discriminate people with tattoos and marijuana affects performance, so I don`t see why not.

This was very enjoyable.

Most guys that I have known get aggressive when you add alcohol. Smoking weed is a much better option. Domestic violence would decrease, for sure. And for that reason alone it should be legalized.

I am unclear on the actual effect that marijuana has on the lungs, though. I`m a big anti-smoking type of person (especially around kids, even if they are your own!) so it`s hard to just jump on this bandwagon. Your lungs, your choice, same as cigs, I guess.

I can see making it legal from a medical standpoint; the benefits are obviously there.
I can definitely see it becoming industrialized and bastardized, so then if you want *good* weed, you`ve got to get the `organic` stuff. Then you`ll wind up paying more for that, just like anything else that`s organic.

Keep it illegal. Just keep it that way. Pots not for everyone anyways.

Imagine going into brain surgery and the Doc lights up a fat one right before he puts you to sleep. Yea there could be rules similar to drinking that apply but you get the point. I love pot but it does cause problems. Don`t even try that crap with it doesn`t because I`ve been smoking for a good 8 years now and know plenty from personal experience.

Let`s say the Gov. does get a hold of it. This might happen.

"First, the industrialization of pot, will bring about a heartless, faceless, lifeless, machine. In the same fashion as the tobacco industry, the marijuana industry will work to mass produce a product and increase profitability at any cost. That means manipulating the high quality green we love to smoke, into a cheaper, lower quality, more addictive, product that we need to smoke."

That quote is why I want it to remain illegal. So I can smoke better weed. :D <

Stop us paying taxes to feed and maintain drug dealers in prison! Regulation, control and rehabilitation would cost less!
If the tax was as high as it is on ciggarettes and alcohol it would generate millions for the economy!
Put an end to the millions generated for al quaida and the taliban by reducing the demand for their main sources of income.

Dude marijuana grows like a weed, have you ever wondered why they even call it that? One plant (that blossoms once every 2-3 months) can give you up to 300grams of the sweet stuff, and you only need about 1 gram per joint. The only thing you need, is a pot, dirt, and water.

And companies can`t sell marijuana you idiot, you can`t take patent on stuff that comes straight from nature.

You can be assured that corporations will not only write the limits into the law, They will set those limits very low as to avoid competition.

If you don`t know these facts about capitalism and how the system really works, You will be in for a rude surprise if it ever is legalized.

I`m not making these facts up, It`s happened to tobacco and it happened to alcohol after prohibition was repealed, It will happen to pot as well, Bank on it.

jwhalerfan: Sure grow your own. What you don`t understand about big business is that they have the money to hire the lobbyists to make the laws, rules, and procedures.

Do you know what it entails to grow tobacco in America ? The farms have to be licensed, inspected, and are taxed.

Are you willing to pay a large fee for a farm license, Have your crop inspected, and be taxed on it ? If not you`ll be illegal, and not just `kinda illegal`, Like it is now in California, With a fine and a smack on the hand. You`d be treated like a `moonshiner` and convicted of a felony if caught. And getting caught a second time means they`ll throw away the key after they lock you up, seize your home, car, and other assets.

jwhalerfan: I`m sure some lab is working on such a device, But legalizing it won`t lessen the problem.

Plus I don`t really think you would want it legalized. There are large corporations already looking into mass production in California. Once big business gets it hands on the marijuana industry you can kiss the variety and higher THC levels goodbye. They`ll undercut the individual growers to the point that it won`t be profitable for them, Then buy them out.

Sorry, But that`s how capitalism works. The price will drop, quality and choice will disappear, and you`ll be buying your pot the way you buy cigarettes.

Actually, Chubbles, the millions of Americans who smoke pot are on the road with you everywhere you go. And they`re high. Legalizing it would most likely decrease the number of people driving high, as there would be a general fear from the non-smokers that would force police to carry some kind of device to determine your "highness".

The nice thing about pot being illegal right now is most people have no idea who is high and who isn`t. Not all potheads look and act like Jeff Spicoli. Trust me.

I can`t see pot being legal for anyone under a certain age, and only a few strands woulkd be approved. Yes, drug use would go down, but there would have to be laws in place (eg, driving) and the people who smoked it would still be non-nice individuals. Blegh.

Some people understand what`s going on, but most don`t. And that`s true the world over with Weed... It has nothing to do with its effects on the body!! It`s all about lobbyist and greed. Weed is illegal because people didn`t want to lose money. Period.

I hardly smoke. I wouldn`t consider myself a pothead. Although when I do, I really enjoy it. Great for recreational use. My biggest problem with the debate is our Governments deciding what we can and can`t do. It sickens me. If pot becomes legal and interstate commerce comes into play, then by all means, Feds, get involved. That`s what you`re there for.

Ok, so weed isn`t all that healthy for us. Big f***king deal. EITHER ARE THESE ENERGY DRINKS AND FAST FOOD CHAINS and whatever other crap is allowed for consumption with the collapse of the former FDA process. And it`s ok to feed your young child Methylphenidates(ritalin, etc)? Gimme a break.

I sooooo have an opinion about this. Drugs are bad. I have a light grasp on how supply and demand works. Drugs should be illegal because people won`t want to try them they are, that creates a demand for illegal drugs so to squash demand completely you need to remove the supply of drugs so that people won`t demand hem because it is pointless. I had an economics teacher try to tell me one time that by increasing the supply of goods you decrease the demand but he was clearly a liberal homosexual and didn`t realize that drugs are the only things that defy the economic model of supply and demand.

Can`t you people see what legalizing pot for everyone (not just medicinal cases) would actually do? I think less than everyone is expecting. I don`t think crime will increase or decrease that much. The government will regulate it and its potency. More potent strands will pop up illegally and be sold the same way most weed is mainly sold today.

Think amphetamines and cocaine (I can`t think of a better analogy right now). One is legal, one is not. Both are still widely being used.

That being said, I can`t say I feel too strongly about either side of the arguement.

Marijuana has been shown to increase the risks of head, neck, lung, prostate and cervical cancers, adult-onset giloma, increases the risk of memory loss(~50%), and has potentially harmful psychological and psychomotor impairment effects.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has also reported that there is four times the amount of tar in a marijuana cigarette than in a tobacco cigarette.

Used PubMed and LexisNexis Academic to get this info.

Considering these risks, I would be cautious about allowing the legalization of recreational marijuana use (it`s got pros and cons, just like any other drug, and can be abused and lead to problems if not under control).

I`m all for medical use though - there just aren`t many other viable alternatives since it is capable of relieving pain, controlling vomiting and nausea, stimulating appetite and reducing anxiety. Weighing the previous dangers against the limited options of the chronically ill is an entirely di

@CrakrJak maybe what he should have said is "the kids who are going to try weed are going to try it, legal or not."

Not every person wants to try it, not every person is going to try it. But the people who want to try it, will. There is no stopping them. We have proved that with nearly one-hundred years of prohibition. We proved it with alcohol too. If someone really wants it, and it is easy to make/grow, they will get it. And the government can`t stop people from getting it.

They have tried everything to stop people from smoking it. And nothing has worked.

I personally think that making it legal will keep it out of the younger populations hands. It will be the adults responsibility to keep it from their kids. Currently, all that is between kids and pot is ten dollars.

I know it`s not physically addictive, but sometimes I wonder how people can argue it`s not psychologically addictive. I don`t really see an argument for keeping marijuana illegal. That being said, I don`t buy a lot of the bogus BS about hemp-made crap and smoking pot in lieu of medicine. It`s a drug, you smoke it to get stoned, the end.

Just legalize it and focus efforts on drugs that actually cause problems (cocaine/crack, meth, heroin).

I don`t get the big deal with weed. There are plenty of drugs which are far safer that should be legalised first. Ecstasy for example.

<sarcasm>Great idea! So we can have everyone dying in the streets from dehydration. Oh, and getting holes in their brains from the serotonin washes. And grinding their teeth down into nothing.

Totally better than people sitting around, smoking a bowl, getting munchies and drinking water/pop/juice when they get the pasties.

DEFINITELY safer than marijuana. </sarcasm>

Even if it is legalized it should be restricted the same way alcohol is. No driving, smoking in public, or using under 21.

Prime example of ZERO thought process, Or should I say a thought process influenced by a frequent marijuana user ?

Yeah, Just let the kids do whatever they want and be irresponsible and screw up their lives over getting that next high. <sarcasm>

The majority of people have not and will not smoke pot or consume illegal drugs. I know former pot users right now, That don`t want their kids to follow in their footsteps. So quit lying about it by saying `They are going to try it`, It`s a quitters attitude and it stinks.

"But constantly seeing first hand what it does isnt fun to people around the users."

I am in love with this argument. Or, maybe I`m not reading it right. Anyway, the way I see it is, marijuana needs to be legalized, but there need to be regulations on where it can be smoked. For example, if you are an adult with children living with you, you should not be allowed to smoke marijuana in your home. You ought to be allowed to drink marijuana in your tea, or eat it with a food, but smoking it around children should be a no-no, as you don`t want them to inhale the smoke, too.

"And if you develop a lung cancer because of it, it`s probably because you were using it with tobacco."

Probably not exactly true. Scientists are beginning to think that as long as you SMOKE something, you have the possibility to get cancer as a result. So, if you smoke a joint or blunt or weed cigarette every once in a while, there still is a possibility of lung cancer. If

This video is brilliantly done.

Most young adults are for legalization even if they don`t smoke. The old fundamentalist, who are still brainwashed by Refer Madness propaganda, will eventually die, so to speak. If logic finally takes over, legalization is inevitable.

There are no opponents of marijuana that a) know what they are talking about or b) aren`t making money on marijuana being illegal.

Get informed.

This is just a short list of people who make a huge direct profit on marijuana being illegal.

Drug Dealers
Police
Medication Companies
Drug Testing Facilities
DEA
Private Prisons
Paper Companies
Clothing Companies
Etc.

People who are for legalization aren`t asking you to smoke it, they are just asking you to admit that marijuana isn`t nearly as bad for you as alcohol or cigarettes, and prohibition has done nothing but harm to our country.

Like I said, it`s not for everyone. Baalthazaag`s link is good information. However, we now start our kids off early taking pills to "be normal". We have a bar on every corner so people can go and tie one on, then (usually) drive home. If you want to take a stand against something, these things hurt people.

Honestly people, why would you care if it is legal if you don`t like it yourself? If pot became legal, our country would be a little bit safer for all of us. Sure, it`s not for everyone. We all know potheads that do nothing and go nowhere. That`s their choice. They smoke whether it`s legal or not. But there are successful people who like to puff and can maintain their lives.

Weed has been portrayed as a gateway drug, or a mind altering, evil substance that ruins lives. COME ON we all know this isn`t true. And don`t be afraid for your kids, they are going to try it, legal or not. If they like it, they`ll continue to smoke it, legal or not. It`s 2010. Time to move forward.

Pot is illegal for reasons other than its effects on the body. It`s politics. A plant brings nothing harmful to humans. It`s all positive. And as far as your lungs, you can use a vaporizer or eat it in food. Forget that argument.

Please don`t take a stand against those who deserve a choice.

As I thought, the CDC study is the source of the 0 deaths, and states: "It excludes unintentional injuries, homicides, and other causes indirectly related to drug use, as well as newborn deaths due to the mother’s drug use".

Meanwhile over 16`000 of the 17`000 deaths for Alcohol (I`m assuming you used the CDC`s 2000 figures for Alcohol) included car crashes.

@thetas if they require a license to grow it, the same way there`s a license to grow tobacco, i think they could avoid people growing their own. or maybe even taxing the seeds themselves, that way if you do grow it at home you still have to give money to the govt

Also, deaths by coconut: 9 confirmed cases, estimates of up to 150 per year.

I`ve personally seen people do some pretty stupid poo while high, so I`m guessing the 0 is utter bullpoo unless you`re talking specifically about "death by overuse".

In which case you shouldn`t be counting say, drunk drivers, just alcohol poisoning.

Back to Marijuana use though, smoking is carcinogenic. The substance being burned is only partially to blame for lung cancer.

So all of a sudden you`re only counting smoking if it`s nicotine overdose or suffocation, and not say lung cancer.

Long story short, the 0 is going to be bullpoo. You have not applied identical methodology to each stat.

I like how in this video the mayor is making huge revenue off of the taxes he imposes on the "flower," because, I mean, it wasn`t clear enough that you could literally just walk outside the town and pick the "flowers" yourself, or hell, grow them, since they grow so incredibly fast and are so incredibly easy to harvest. The fact of the matter is you can`t make tax on something you can`t sell and you can`t sell something anyone can just grow in the ground. In essence, those "flowers" = No revenue.

@Gerry1of1: Explain to me where you got your statistics.
While it does lack many of the downfalls of Tobacco it is by no means free of unsafe effects and I do not condone its non-medicinal use. However, I also believe it`s none of The Man`s beeswax what people do to themselves barring when it endangers others, and it should never have been outlawed in the first place. If people wanna smoke marijuana, they should feel free to...just please don`t drive.
