Want To Be Good At Starcraft? Here`s How

Submitted by: Matwix_2004 7 years ago in Misc

You have to be able to do between 200 and 300 actions per minute to even stand a chance.

I hear with SC2 it`s less about APM and micro than it was with SC. The game has changed.

Why would I play this if I could play a game where you shoot sh*t with massive ass guns?

The funny thing is that it really isn`t this hard. Trust me after about 5 years playing this game you learn that a lot of those actions per minute don`t matter too much if they`re sloppy.
Also while I`m here BOUNDS and Tests of Survival are the best map styles PERIOD!

yea, after watching I agree with @steelgrid, most of the actions were pointless and only worked toward having a higher APM as opposed to actually playing better. In the W3 example he almost lost his Demon hunter creeping ...

OK I watched this video in hopes that maybe he would show me something....He didnt. As a WC tourney player myself I find that easily over half his taken actions are completly unessesary. Clicks like 80 times to move to one spot. The Vultures he was moving he just moved them back and forth before attacking the nexus. I understand the need to micromanage...But clicking the same spot 80 times does not make u move faster and his APM could have been spent elsewhere on the map. Not impressive.

What a poser, hes mostly spamming the same keys over and over to make it look like hes doing a lot. The game only spits out new units every X seconds no amount of click spam will hurry that up.

Well, at the point you start earning some serious, serious money for playing a game I imagine. I say serious money, he`s probably on about 100k a year looking at the tournys available to him and the prize money you get for coming placed. Not to mention sponsorship deals (starcraft is HUGE in asia, seriously).

I call BS. either they were playing that video at "10x speed or the guy was just smashing buttons. I can`t get a brand new out of the box top of the line PC to follow 1 keystroke a second let alone 200 in a minute. Sure I could put in 200 commands in a minute, but it would take 2 hours for the PC to catch up."

so one keystroke a second means it took you 5 minutes and 15 seconds to type that message?

Obviously hydro uses MS-DOS on his brand-new top of the line PC.

@Hydro:

If you can`t get a brand-new out of the box comp to follow at least 5 keystrokes a second, bring it back for a refund. I typed the word "Starcraft" in one second, including quotes and caps. That`s 13 keystrokes, and not all actions are keystrokes.

I`m in the SCII beta, and I played against a guy last night that racked up an incredible 600apm. Utterly smoked my team before his team even got halfway to where he was.

200 APM isn`t that outrageous.

You can easily do 4 actions in a second in Starcraft.

o.o I have no words. This is ... no. "Brand new top of the line PCs" can process 200 commands without even straining the processor when playing Starcraft.

"On another note, why can`t the admins install CAPTCHAs for the comment sections?"

Nooo those are annoying as hell. To be honest there is very little spam in IAB, it`s easier to just ban the bots and delete the comments.

its not bs, i watch highly rated sc players all the itme, there are casted replays of games on youtube you can search for. starcraft 2 beta is the big thing right now, there are APM counters in the replays that you can watch. any of the high level players have at least 200 apm for most of the game, this is why i dont play. cant keep up with that poo.

Hydro-

I`m a casual StarCraft player, but they have the one feature that allows you to see the APM of the players during a replay. There are people that literally do 200-300 actions per minute. Of course, an action isn`t always a keystroke.
I can`t believe that all those keystrokes are actually doing something useful in the game... I just can`t :P
They don`t. Most of them were to check up on his units and buildings, which isn`t very useful to do every half second.
what the hell... he just spammed like 50 buttons and all he did was make his guys kill some other guys... i could have done that with 2 clicks, 1. select soldiers 2. right click enemy, watch...
When you kill other units, you can put some strategy in it. For example, moving your damaged units to the back make it so they aren`t targeted, but they still do as much damage as units that have full health.

APM is not a direct measure of skill; a portion of that in higher leagues would be spam. As your knowledge of the game increases and you know what you need to do, your APM should gradually increase

It comes from knowing the game pretty well, knowing what you need to accomplish what you want before you even start, and being able to execute it as quickly as possible. I wouldn`t call it fun, but if you`re playing for money, I guess it`s necessary.

I never got into starcraft, but I became addicted to Warcraft 3. Often when I would play online a teammate would drop out and I would get control of all their stuff. Therefore you would be playing with over 100 different units. And knowing all the keystrokes was essential to being good in that game. I would often beat 3 or 4 people by myself.

I finally was able to pull myself away from Warcraft 3 after playing around 1500 online games. I also got sick of everyone cheating in warcraft 3, it ruined the game.
