You can tell a lot about what"s going on in a church by it"s bulletin board.

@Broadway: Honey, it`s because of the bottom part. "America`s JOYOUS future!"
That`s the title of the sermon, when they have all those meetings before it. It`s called humor. Look it up.

It`s what churches SHOULD be doing. And that is: More than just taking up space and tithes. Helping people.

vv Agreed Jason. Even as an atheist, I can fully support this kind of work that a (good) church does.

Still a lot better than the "you`re all going to hell" type churches out there. These people actually try to act like Jesus. I support this.

"Isn`t that a bit early?"

I think the better caption would be "in the community" since the spousal abuse, suicidal teens and alcoholics aren`t doing these things IN the church.

Warms my day up to know that there are still churches out there that don`t ignore the problems and acknowledge the reality that the problems exist and people need support and friends to deal with things. Better than others who ignore the problems, criticize everything(including church) and sit on a moral high ground.

I think I just figured something out about these types of posts.. it really has nothing to do with any sort of anti-religious tone.. people keep f5ing this page just to see what ridiculous comment is going to be made by either side.

Hell, it isn`t even about arguing theology in the discussions anymore.. it is about who can be the most vile.

lol, Heureux is such a boring retard. "meh, meh, meh... i`m cooler than everyone else `cause i need a crutch just to live my own life... won`t someone write another fiction book that i can use for all life lessons?"

you suck.

"In general, atheists, like other bigots..."

Heureux, despite the crude responses of many others on this site, atheism does not imply bigotry. In fact, it is usually the strong believers in religion who are bigots. By stating that all atheists are bigots, you have displayed your own intolerance for people with opinions different than your own. You, sir, are a bigot.

Heureux - I concur with davymid and the others. F*ck you. You`re a moron. Try making sense and people might listen to you. Do you even know the definition of bigot? There may be atheists who are bigots, but there are Christians, Jews, etc. who are too. That`s like calling a white person a racist.

You need to get your head out of your ass. I`m not an atheist but that was just stupid.

This church really does have problems... I mean really, SOUP KITCHEN!?!?? These people are so messed up!!

Really though, the church doesn`t have problems for having these programs for helping people. They`re just actively confronting the problems that are present in any community.

im not religious or anything, but replacing the destructive habit ( drugs, alchohol, etc) with god seems to be a better solution then overdosing, to me.

its ok to replace one crutch with another if its a better, healthier crutch.

`...replacing one crutch with another.`

I wouldn`t disagree with you on that, but surely the latter is preferable to the former.

Y`know, often people with addictive personalities need a crutch but some are healthier choices than others. Take for example a runner who was formerly a coke addict; they`re still getting high from running but the manner with which they`re accomplishing it is (one would assume) healthy.

@swisskid ... in some instances there`s very little left than a choice between alcohol, drugs, aggression, suicide, etc. which are destructive to the self, others, and society vs. replacing these pathologies with [a faith and obedience to] god, a lifestyle which tends to be harmless and positive.

I disagree with the public posting of these meetings. It could make it difficult for an individual in distress to seek help at risk of public embarrassment, people gossiping about who shows up at the church on Tuesday nights, for example. Couldn`t the church simply post a phone number or email address that a person can contact in private for meeting/counseling dates & places?

The problem with a lot of these programs (AA, overcoming eating disorders etc.) may help these people, but in a lot of the cases all the church is doing is replacing the addictions to alcohol/ drugs/ whatever and replacing them with god. All there doing is replacing one crutch with another.

I agree with Handsompod; the church is one of the most crucial elements in strengthening the community. It is simply when it starts acting like a government that it becomes... well, like a government. Evil, exploitative, manipulative, hypocritical... et cetera, et cetera...

"I love this, a post showing the church actually doing good work in the community and people are still down on it. What did you do to make your community better today?"

In general, atheists, like other bigots, don`t do anything to make their community better. They just attack those who do.

Churches, particularly progressive ones, have been crucial to non-profits by providing free, or nearly free, space to meet, for generations.
