Being very English I feel I have to object, it`s a terrapin not a turtle. Having said that, I know that the definitions vary. As long as it`s part of the order Testudines then Turtle will do (it is a terrapin though).

@motownc: It`s a difference between British and US English.... Brits refer to most turtles kept as pets as "terrapins" or "pond turtles." In the US, there is a differentiation between "turtles" and "terrapins" -- terrapins live in brackish (somewhat-salty) water and turtles live in fresh water.

With that said, the video is of a red ear slider (Trachemys scripta elegans). It is semi-aquatic and is indigenous to Southern US streams and ponds. I don`t expect you to know this because you are from England, but you shouldn`t speak with such certainty when you don`t know the species you`re looking at. The red ear slider is a turtle, not a terrapin.

bdr127. We in England are quite familiar with Red-necked Terrapins - they exist in a naturalised state in many waterbodies. We typically reserve `turtle` for marine chelonians, and `terrapin` for those with a freshwater bias. Tortoises for the truly land based jobs. I`ve never heard a Brit use the phrase `Pond Turtle`.

Supposedly terrapin is derived from an Indian word, personally I prefer it, but slider is pretty descriptive.

In the end perhaps it should be called
    Rotwangen-Schmuckschildkröte
as this subspecies was named by the German Naturalist Prince Maximillian of Wied-Neuwied in 1839...
