I wouldn`t want a porcupine as a pet. You`d hafta keep it in a cage to keep it from snuggling with you at night, which I think is a disgusting thing to do to your pet... and you`d never be able to snuggle or kiss it. They`re better in the wild.

I`ve never see an adult porcupine kept as a pet before! In high school, my friend had one, but it was just a little one. It was really playfull andfriendly, though.

Slotherder: How would you know if they could or could not interbreed ? Other than some prickly attempts at a zoo, I seriously doubt any scientist has really investigated it (artificial insemination, etc..).

If I had one of those I`d accidentally bump into it at night and get a few dozen quills thrust into my calves.

"I`d also like to add that many people just bathe them in vinegar or other slightly acidic baths.

It softens the quills up. You can clip the tips off or even braid them up."

Now that is something I`d like to see!

The way he moves remindes me of the robot dagget from the original battlestar galactica. That turned out to be a guy in a suit. I was disappointed.

@CrakrJak: They should be separated into different species. Not simply because of geographic isolation, but because there are some rather large anatomical differences between them. They are unable to interbreed, as well, which is a pretty stern dividing point between species. I`m no porcupine expert (just sloths) but I am a stickler on some things ;-)

Slotherder: Wikipedia `Order` is 3 ranks above `Species`.

The problem is Porcupines are lumped in with a lot of the other `Rodents`. Hystricidae & Erethizontidae Should not be seperated into different `families` just because they are separated by oceans.

A cane rat, capybara, & porcupine are really not alike, Yet they are lumped into the same family.
It`s just taxonomically wrong, In my opinion.

@CrakrJak: If you`re going to argue scientific nomenclature, you could say they are in the same order (or even more specifically, infra-order), but that is as far as you can get while adhering to taxonomic denomination. There is more to nomenclature than simply how something "looks". At least try to have a grasp of the scientific concepts you decide to disagree with before deciding to disagree with it.

gorgack2000: True, The picture was of an african porcupine, But they are still the same species.. I don`t consider the `isolation` argument to be valid when it comes to classifying species.

They do however look different, So I apologize.

"too bad they pulled out all his stingers one by one which is why he has this brown "dent" in his back.. if you wanna see how he usually looks: http:// www.billybear4kids .com/animal /whose-toes /porcupine.jpg
(delete spaced because of stupid 40-character-word regulation...)
And all that just to make this wild animal domestically acceptable so he doesn`t shoot his needles everywhere... stupid animal cruelty people"

Dude, porcupines don`t shoot out their quills. They`re very loosely attached so they just come off like nothing.

Pulling off his quills wouldn`t be super-painful at all, as they`re prone to come off easy anyway.

Just did a bit of research, the animal in the video is indeed a North American Porcupine. Here`s a picture of a wild one.

@Corydoras87- Erm no. North American porcupines look like that naturally. You`re confusing this one with an African porcupine.

@CrakrJak- That`s an African porcupine. The one in the video is a different species, can`t remember exactly which.

Lolz! Cute spinning!
Not a good pet though: They smell, they`re impossible to house-train, they CHEW everything, then there`s the whole `quills` thing, eh?
Up in northern Manitoba, there`s zillions of them, can`t recall hearing about a pet one though.

just for the record they don`t actually "shoot" their quills the just come off very easily if you get stuck with them, just a lil fact
