Ooohhh there`s a little cat fight going on! I thought it was hilarious when atheistalien called ripper closed-minded. They both are, just in a different way... Yelling at each others for their beliefs and shoving new ones down each others` throats.... it makes for good entertainment, at least :P

ripper it`s funny too see you still talking out of your *ss. You think just because you say I`m angry I am? Actually I`m f*cking laughing at you cause you are the same as all religious idiots. All you do is deny and insult. Maybe you should take the joke I made about the magic underwear and get a f*cking sense of humor. I`m done with you and your hypocritical and bigoted *ss.

:sigh: Atheism has become what it claimed to hate. It is it`s own church now, with it`s own televangelists and propaganda. Asserting political pressure and breeding disdain for people who believe in something different.

AtheistAlien, it`s still funny how angry you are. Like a little frustrated child. Anyone can curb stomp someone without being bad ass. And I certainly wouldn`t need to be a bad ass to do it myself, nor think that I am. Maybe some of those mormon jumpsuit underwear would help you calm down.

Absolutely no problem with a religious tradition or belief that doesn`t belittle, condemn, or harm anyone. I`d rather be left out of the underwear club for not sharing your beliefs than have the Inquisitor put me to the rack for not sharing his. But respecting the fact that you hold a belief doesn`t mean I have to respect the belief itself, or restrain myself from giggling continuously at the thought of sacred lingerie.

What I don`t understand is why anyone would want to make a film about somebody else`s underwear? Really, you want to talk about underwear so much that you edited a lengthy film about it. It also very offensive to take something sacred and make a mockery of it, even in title. Would you do this if it were your mother`s or your wife`s or your best friend`s closely held belief? Have a little dignity.

As a mormon, this is actually pretty offensive. We don`t talk about it not because its a secret, but because it is incredibly sacred to us. This is IAB however, and i`m sure nothing is sacred here.

We believe that Garments provide spiritual protection, but anyone claiming to have received physical protection is just relating an anecdotal coincidence. We don`t teach that it physically protects you from harm.

*sigh. I don`t understand why people get so worked up about a simple practice that people agree to.

flibmeister: Sorry, dear, I should have made myself more clear. I was not talking about the Bible, Koran and book of Mormon as spiritual references, but as LITERATURE. And that, even as literature, the Bible`s people, lands, cities, kings, emperors, ect., can be historically proven through others references of the times (Josephus, for one) and through archeology. The book of Mormon has absolutely NO archeological proofs to back it up, although they have been searching for some for decades. Also, DNA has emphatically proven the major thesis of the book of Mormon is dead wrong. As for the Koran, if you were to read it, you would see that it is just a poorly written, poorly plagerized (sp, sorry) mish-mash of the Hebrew and Christian texts that came before it. Although, I could see, if you were unfamiliar with the Biblical texts that came before it, you would not see that. Probably why Bibles are oftentimes banned in Muslim dominated countries. Try mailing a Bible to Saudi Arabia.

They have stood in the way of technological and societal advancement to the point where one could say, without much need for evidence, that they retarded science for well over a thousand years.

And the same goes for many other religious organizations. Modern-day Islam, for instance, is extremely backward.

While your church is of much smaller scale, they do lobby for societal change to better suit their own values. And even if the global effect is smaller, it`s the same principle. And by participating you`re undoubtedly a part of it.

The "Believe what you want, as long as you don`t bother anyone with it" principle doesn`t really work in practice.

Look, I bet you`re a nice person. But the problem with this, is that the organization you`re a part of, just like all other religious organizations, are contraindicative of Human societal development.

I have absolutely nothing against religious or spiritual people. Everyone is entitled to their belief. I do have a problem with religion as an institution though. The institution itself is inevitable, since people who share common goals and beliefs will undoubtedly congregate.

Look at the Vatican. It has been responsible for countless genocides, murders and misery for nearly two millenia.

Oh and that can apply to all religions too you know, otherwise there would only be one "right" religion. So everybody who chooses one way of life over another must on some level think those other people are wrong (at least when that way of life informs what they think will happen in the afterlife, ie: everybody but them will burn in hell).

As regarding all these comments regarding atheists and such. To put this simply, atheists do not believe in myths and fairy tales that religion and the religious espouse, postulate, die and and kill for.

The religious of today is like those of the past, whose religions of the past are now called myths. So to is the religions of today, a myth, or fairy tale. But you do have a right to believe in those myths and fairy tales, just as I am to believe that that your believes are children stories are moralizing garbage of fear.

"Atheist do not believe in a god"

No, that is not accurate. Atheists believe that there is no God, which is very different from not believing in God. Atheism is a belief about the nature of God - that God does not exist, and so, all name calling by children here aside, it can fit within definitions of religion.

Atheism is actually just a prejudice. Its only belief is that everyone else in the world is wrong about their lives, their experiences, their character and credibility.

All atheist are intrinsically anti-Semites, by definition. They are also, by definition, anti-Buddhist, anti-Wiccan, etc. - prejudiced against everyone who is not an atheist.

Are you 12? Why would an Atheist not answer you, or if they caught on before saying anything (unlikely) why would they cry about it or be mad. That is usually the reaction of the religious, not the non-religious. Either way, saying and using the date means nothing since it is just a widely used reference to time, which happens to have it`s reference point as Jesus "birth year." The Chinese have their own Calender, as do many other countries.

I`m not saying its an institution. Religion doesnt have to have any sort of organization or place of worship because religion is a personal thing. They don`t make you sit down and worship or be a certain religion. You CHOOSE to. So basically you don`t need a church to have or be in a religion. You simply have to have an opinion about God or any idea related to it.

I already tried explaining the bit that it is in fact a religious belief to not believe so I`m not going to repeat myself.

Now, this is my personal opinion and im sure most will argue, but if the atheists would stop poking fun at things like the pledge in schools then I wouldnt have a single reason to poke fun at them. I`m nearly an atheist myself (Dont believe in god/s or Jesus.) But if they want to continue a tradition of saying god in the pledge, then hey have at it. The word "god" shouldn`t have any meaning to an atheist, so why should they care if they say it. Ok, some are worried about their kids having a different religion than them.. But you know, if it makes your kids happy to believe there`s a god up in the clouds and a heaven, then why not let them be happy? This is why we have wars.. nobody is willing to accept another`s opinion and let them think what they want. Everyone wants to think they`re right and everyone is wrong

Merriam-Websters second definition of "religion" is "a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices"
so, by choosing to not believe in a god, you are choosing a religious attitude and a religious belief.....of not believing. By this logic, yes anyone who visits IAB has a religion, as does everyone in existence. The only people who would not have a religion would be people who well and truly don`t care and don`t know about the arguments and histories of any religion. But, because even subconsciously we react to any argument by either agreeing with it or disagreeing, the only people who may not have a religion is babies or the mentally handicapped. (Note I say May. Science might someday learn babies are awesome and have a link with some kinda god, or that there is no god.)

If someone has read both the Bible and the Book of Mormon, and feel the book of Mormon is better written, they are functionally illiterate. You can throw the Koran in with the book of Morman on that one, also. Not only is the Bible literature of the highest kind, as the others are not, but you can back much of it up with history and archeology, not so with the others.

1 a : the state of a religious <a nun in her 20th year of religion> b (1) : the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2) : commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance

From our good old friend the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

If one does not believe in a god, how can one be religious? That`s why Buddhism is considered a philosophy and school of thought, and not a religion. You could say the same of atheism.

You could of course refute with

"2 : a personal set or institutionalised system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices"

But that refers more to something like "He studied religiously" then what defines a religion (namely, deity worship of belief in a higher power of some sort), so let`s keep it smart here.

Ozmose-you need to finish the entire definition.

Main Entry: re·li·gion
Pronunciation: \ri-ˈli-jən\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English religioun, from Anglo-French religiun, Latin religion-, religio supernatural constraint, sanction, religious practice, perhaps from religare to restrain, tie back — more at rely
Date: 13th century
1 a : the state of a religious <a nun in her 20th year of religion> b (1) : the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2) : commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance
2 : a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices
3 archaic : scrupulous conformity : conscientiousness
4 : a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith

#4 fits any organized belief and beliefs do not entail God concepts alone.

The mere fact going to the website:
Male 302
Ugh, I hate posting quotes this long, but here it goes.

"1. you are ORGANIZED
2. YOU PREACH
3. you CONVERT
4. you have FAITH (your faith is in believing there is nothing larger than you to believe in w/o proof you are right)"

Translation, `You believe in stuff`

"5. You have churches (do a quick search and you will find "meeting" places where your type meet regularly to discuss your religion and plan how to convert more people to it)"

Translation, You gather together to talk about stuff`

"6. you have declared a philosophical or "religious" war on other religions because THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THE SAME AS YOU and you will fight them at every turn TO PROVE YOUR WAY IS THE RIGHT WAY."

Translation, `You think you`re right, and that others are wrong.`
~jamie76 on atheists

You just defined politicians, scientists, mathematicians, teachers... the list goes on.

Thanks Ozmose, for providing a definition I can play with.

re-li-gion
noun
1.
a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. [esp. means especially, so the following stuff doesn`t always hold true] when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually [again, the following stuff doesn`t always hold true] involving devotional and ritual observances, and often [Hey, would you look at that, the following stuff doesn`t always hold true] containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

So, removing the fluff from that definition, we have: "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe."

I really don`t care one way or the other about your argument, I just had to show that your point is invalid.

Jackdabomb - a religion is a belief in (or of) a supernatural power regarded as a creator (or creators) of life (and/or everything).

Atheism is the denial of such beings.

Not only that, faith is (as Tim Minchin puts it) the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved. It doesn`t rest on proof, or evidence, therefore we don`t really have faith. If scientists can prove something, and nobody can dispute it (nobody with any standing for such issues - raising it on the internet doesn`t count) then it will be correct until someone can dispute it. Considering how there are one hell of a lot of scientists, most of whom are pretty damn smart, and how there are journalists looking for such stories daily, it`s not going to happen too quickly - they`re going to make sure they are 100% correct before publishing anything.

Atheist...congrats on founding your very own religion.

I know you dont think you are part of a religion but you are.

1. you are ORGANIZED
2. YOU PREACH
3. you CONVERT
4. you have FAITH (your faith is in believing there is nothing larger than you to believe in w/o proof you are right)
5. You have churches (do a quick search and you will find "meeting" places where your type meet regularly to discuss your religion and plan how to convert more people to it)
6. you have declared a philosophical or "religious" war on other religions because THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THE SAME AS YOU and you will fight them at every turn TO PROVE YOUR WAY IS THE RIGHT WAY.

so, to you i tip my hat for your ability to be so GD stupid that you created the very thing you fight so pitifully hard against...

That just makes them d!cks, in order to be a religion you have to own some land, mormons have Utah, Catholics own the Vatican, and Je

Translation: I have nothing interesting, or factual to say in retort, so I will belittle you, and I will also google a word, like fractally, and use it in a sentence against you.

Have a wonderful day.

They are equally weird, silly and brainwashed. Sorry, but the argument "yeah, we`re that, but they`re worse" doesn`t work beyond the fifth grade.

I never said that "they`re worse" all I said is that most things that people aren`t familiar are considered weird... so what? its weird.. great, if you dont like it fine, but to bash it? you are saying I have 5th grade actions and you are the one on a website bashing anothers religion? isnt that a little hypocritical?

This is really weird right? sure I would agree with you if you hadnt heard it before, but the same could be said for anything in the catholic church.... you pray to different angels? you claim christ came to Jerusalem, and you prove this by a book written thousands of years ago..... weird.... "

Well said, Rockwell. And I agree, the video was actually quite accurate. But I think Mormons actually became famous back when Homer Simpson opened his front door and said, "Oh great. Mormons." ;)

Meh, sure Mormons are kooky, but I have yet to meet a single mean one. My experience has been that they are nice people, and sure they believe in crazy sh*t, but it`s a religion, folks. Do you expect it to make any sense? Well, okay, Mormonism is more cultish for plenty of reasons (absolute obedience to LDS leaders b/c they think Jesus talks directly to them, shunning anyone who leaves the church or decides not to join, not allowing blacks until recent decades, bigotry towards homosexuals, etc.). Remember, it`s a religion... cult... religion. Aw f*ck it. It`s a cultigion.

Is it weird? sure! is it silly? if you think so... The point of the whole thing is that it is a part of our religion and really a major part. Those who are active "real" mormons will be wearing these, just like they will be avoiding tobacco and alcohol, just like they will be not engaging in premarital sex, its part of our religion, we follow it if we believe in it, and if you dont, then go follow something else or nothing at all.

I am mormon, proud of it, and hopefully you are proud in whatever you believe

Wow, we`re famous!

To be 100% honest this was actually just about as accurate a description of these things that I have seen, and so I give props to whoever made the video, they didnt really embellish anything.

Mormonism and the Free Masonry have some similar roots and so the symbols and also the whole point of wearing a garment can be found in free masonry as well.

I wear Garments. I dont call them magic or anything like that, they are more of a symbol of protection than actual protection. There have been people shot burned and what have you that have been protected by the garments, as well as the other way around. For me the are a symbol of my religion the same way a regular christian wears a cross, or a muslim wears a turban perhaps.

It ensures that you dress modest because it covers a large part of your body, also it would be a last reminder to someone that could be potentially cheating on their wife as this would obviously be removed to cheat

I like the quote:

"I contest that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."

Because why should this work any more or less than a St. Christopher?

I`m a mormon, but I don`t wear "magic underpants".
And I don`t see why people think oout beliefs are so weird. We believe in God, Jesus, and the Holy ghost. We believe that God created us. We believe we came from somewhere, we`re here now, and we have the opportunity to go to a much better place after death. We`re Christians..."

... Who believe a village idiot who said Jesus went to America. You`re weird.

...and basically believe that some guy found some golden plates in a forest, in the ground. That is where your entire belief system comes from.

I am a Mormon, and I do wear the "special magic" underpants. SO WHAT if they remind me not to be an idiot and to remind me of my religious covenants? Guy No-mos (non-mormons) often wear a t-shirt and boxers under their clothes, these feel really no different. And for us chicks, you never have a pantyline, and your bra doesn`t dig into you, and you don`t get sweat stains on your clothes.
There are weird Mos just like there are weird people of any religion. And there are us regular people just trying to get along. I work for the Catholic church, and have also worked for many other denominations, and we all have much more in common than you think. Pax...

It`s your choice to believe (Or not believe) what you choose to, but when you have to slam other people`s beliefs just because you don`t share them, it`s time to step back and take a look at your sad little life.

Actually they got it wrong on the garments. It`s during the ordinances of Initiatory do you begin to wear the magical underpants and not the ordinance of Endowments.

In a neighborhood where seeing Mormons on bikes in shirts and ties, or in black three-piece suits in the snow, I`ve heard some odd things. The undergarment thing wasnt news, but I`ve heard rumors--this is hearsay--that special passwords and handshakes are learned at the highest level of the Church, and guarantee access to heaven..or some such thing. The whole thing is bizarre.

For the record, Mormons are about the nicest folks on the planet, their beliefs are just a little...esoteric.
