sugar`s not bad in moderation. Kids used to run around in a constant flurry of motion. Now the only flurry of motion comes from their fingers over the controller in their hands :/

Obviously this ad is old `cause almost no one uses sugar in softdrinks anymore. Of course corn syrup lobbies the same thing these days.

I don`t see what the problem is: totally true - if you burn off fewer calories than you consume, you make fat. Sugar has calories, but so does everything else you eat. For sure sugar can be a part of your healthy diet.

Yeah, but sugar has so much more fat than, say, an an apple. If you ate twinkies 3 square meals a day, you`d get fat. If you ate apples, you wouldn`t.

Actually sugar isn`t what gets you fat. You can`t turn glucose into fat, but if you have too much in your system you`ll not use up fat reserves and all the fat you do eat will have no need to be used and will be stored instead.

Agree : too much sugar can make you fat, and is bad for you in many ways.

Disagree : there`s too many skinny kids. (all I see are fat ones or way too skinny ones)

It also depends on your metabolism.

People get mixed up. FAT is the thing that makes you fat, SUGAR is the thing which gives you diabetes. That`s why you`ll find Sweets labelled "99% Fat Free!" and fatty crap labelled "99 Sugar Free!". As Ruswut said, you can`t turn sugar (fructose, dextrose, glucose or sucrose) into fat.

BUT... does it really give you an energy hit? Try this simple experiment at home kids!

Stand upright, hold your arm out at 90 degrees, and have a friend pull or push downwards with all his/her might. Wow, you`re amazingly strong, you can resist his efforts and keep your arm there!

Now take 1 teaspoon of sugar, wait 30 seconds, then try it again.

forgive me for not having my metabolic chart with me and no i dont know it by heart even if i am studying in biotechnology. Sugars are a VERY wide term to use, and depending on which sugar you are taking yes, it CAN become fat (aka fatty acids)

    take glucose for exemple

    glucose -> pyruvate -> acetyl~CoA ->(by Acetyl CoA carboxylase) -> malonyl~CoA -> fatty acids

oh wait what LOOK sugar becomes fat

also yes its a very important source of energy, however it is a very easily consumed energy source, therefore the "sugar rush" doesnt last long, just the way we know it.

    ---

energy =/= muscular force, and also more energy = more jittering, therefore its possible to lose "muscular resistance" when eating

sugar free candies are sugar free because they use sugar your body can`t metabolize therefore make you bloated, painful and diarreah if you eat too much. same thing with fatty foods..they use olestra for example and its not surprising its also called " Unwashable and Indestructible Ass Grease". lion..your post is full of fail

Sugar does not get directly turned into fat, but they do cause the liver to produce excess triglycerides, which do get converted into fat.

"SUGAR is the thing which gives you diabetes."

I agree, but in the end, too much sugar messes up with insulin and then with your entire metabolism. I suppose it is important for people to understand that.

The only kids I usually see that are fat usually have fat parents. Also there have been many studies that say sugar free and artificial sugar make you fatter. The logic here is your body needs sugar, and if all you are giving it is fake unusable sugar it will store any real sugar in reserve.

Sugar does not CAUSE diabetes, first of all, although it adds to the pancreas failing to make enough insulin to support the sugar intake. And sugar in moderation is fine, even if you have diabetes. As for fat kids, all the mini heifers I see have a big heifer to blame for it. Seriously, it pisses me off. Just because you`re fat doesn`t mean you have to make sure your kids are fatter than you.

My boyfriend`s mom is on the larger side and she has diabetes from not taking enough care of herself when she had the chance. Yes, she has 3 boys that like to eat junk, but she should know better than to be eating like that, or even to be letting her kids eat like that, because you know what? She`s a freaking nurse for christ`s sake! You`d think a nurse that specializes in surgeries and heart problems would have enough common sense to make sure her entire family is eating healthy the majority of the time. McDonald`s, pizza, and various grilled meats do not count.

Ya know what cause the weight gain?? Women in the work place. Women arnt home to feed and care for their offspring. So on the parenst way home, they pick up a few big macs and call it a family meal.

I`m a house wife. I have a little part time job working less that 20 hours a week. But you can be damn sure I have breakfast and dinner cooked everyday. No fast food in my house. No junk food either.

Overprotective women at home cooking for their kids and making them stay home instead of running out in traffic.

Kids running out in traffic get all the exercise they need, big macs or not.

American Diabetic Association: "Suagr diabetes or type II adult onset diabetes is now an epidemic in the US with nearly 1 in 7 Americans expected to get Db II in the next 15 to 20 years. This is a direct result of heavy sugar and poor diet intake."

Poor diet DOES contribute to diabetes kids.
I have it in my family, almost every family member on my dad`s side has diabetes, but because I eat right, I stand a very good chance of not getting it.
My cousins ate total crap every day (one day a cousin ate cereal, canned ravioli, ice cream then chips an hour before dinner) and now have to inject insulin.

Most everything is made with high-fructose corn syrup around here. Hell, Pepsi even had a "throwback" series that was "made with real sugar" instead of a substitute. Apparently our fat asses love us some fructose!

It`s not what`s in the food that`s the problem, it`s the the size of the portions and the fact that for many people (including kids) they have a sedentry lifestyle. Also so much of what is consumed in the Western diet is processed to heck with most of the nutritional value removed. What`s left is empty calories and a ton of salt, fat and carbs.

This is why they felt the need to get the point across...Its all about moderation. Eating 3 square meals of twinkies a day is not moderation. Its not about how much sugar is in the food, but how much sugar you eat

Well it sort of has a point. A piece of cake or a big mac every now and then isn`t going to make you gain 200lbs. Eating them on a daily basis without any sort of exercise...well then you`re drated unless you have some kind of magic metabolism.

"take a bunch of caffeine and wash it down with schnapps with this for a balanced meal. The caffeine ups your heart rate to burn calories and the booze thins your blood"
I`m pretty sure I heard doing stuff like this can kill you cos it`s a stimulant and a depressant working against each other...

I don`t think so, shneeblefish. The problem is when you mix two of a kind, like sleeping pills and alcohol, which are both depressants.

In what English-speaking country are "so many kids thin?" Then again, children are never called "kids" in the U.K. because that means a baby goat, so that leaves only the USA.

"But how many fat kids do you see?"
I am truly baffled by this statement. A WHOLE LOT OF THEM!

God, why do we even care about fat people? They know what they are doing. It`s their choice. All we can do is give them the information and the rest is up to them.

The US imposes very high tariffs on sugar so most companies simply make their food without sugar. Instead they use high fructose corn syrup which studies have shown that there is a direct relation to the obesity epidemic. The tariffs remain in place because the use of the syrup keeps the US farm industry going. It is in everything - read your labels...or be fat.

You guys are a bit out-of date concerning the link between high fructose corn syrup and obesity. I`ve read at leats three studies in medical journals significantly linking high fructose corn syrup to obesity. These studies were conducted by neutral scientific parties as opposed to Corporate backed food research companies and anti-corn research.

The most recent having been published by Princeton University in late March, early April, compares the impact of high fructose corn syrup to the impact of sugar: http://bit.ly/d7wvnO

Don`t believe what you hear in commercials, and recognize that science is ever advancing. Also be aware that the corn industry is the largest single-crop agribusiness in the world.

Question everything. Do your own research.
