Not just because they are trained and skilled but because life is much more important than a piece of machinery.

Oh my God,zero-zero. READ THIS PEOPLE. If one of you retards comments again thinking that there is a minimum altitude for modern fighters, then i think im gonna kill someone.

There is a minimum distance that you should eject by before you start risking serious injury or death. It`s a matter of the chute deploying and decelerating you enough so that you can actually walk away. I`m thinking this guy is probably under that distance. If so, he`s one LUCKY guy.

planes are engineered to be safe while flying. not while plumetting to earth. becuase well lets face it, there is nothing you can do to an airplane that will make a crash like that any less fatal. except obviously the parachute. the reason it exploded is because of all the fuel onboard when it hit the ground, hot parts plus flammable fuel equals bang.

how fast was that plane going that it explodes on contract? i mean the crash didn`t look that fast. i would hope planes would be engineered a bit stronger.

Interesting that this happens when the federal government is in the controversial process of buying new jets... just sayin`
-----------------
Maybe they`re in a cartel with the media and the jet plane industry, and they`re training a ton of modern-day Evil Knievils to learn to eject just before crashing into various places so that the jet companies have a steady source of income and the media has a constant stream of news stories!

the pilot is fine an ejection that close to ground can save your life and save you from permamnent injury.

the reason he most likely waited that long is because he knows what he as to do. when a pilot`s plane is crashing their first priority is not their lives but the lives of the innocents that are on the ground. you purposely steer the plane away from all civilians even if it means your own life.

that happened in lethbridge alberta something like 3 days ago. unknown failure last i heard. really lucky that he could get the plane away from the people. and i dont think it was at an airshow. i heard that it was before the airshow, so it might ave been practice or something. still, damn lucky for him. takes a lot of skill and training but mostly luck to come out of something like that alive

And after further review, this was an intentional stall and most likely a mechanical failure prevented an effective recovery. Simply a bird being sucked into the engine wouldn`t cause that kind of problem, unless it was an ostrich...

What a spectacular job done by this pilot. Granted, I do not have any information other than what is presented in this picture, but this pilot did a fantastic job by not harming anyone. Even if it was his (or her) own stupidity that led up to the crash, the pilot has a huge responsibility of putting the plane on the ground and not harming any observers. This particular pilot. apparently waited until he was confident that the plane was not going to kill anyone. Way to go, unidentified fly-boy!

From what I heard he was taken to hospital, but recovered there.
I could be wrong though, he might be in more serious trouble than that.

Not sure if a parachute helps any that close to the ground.

"Umm did u miss him in the top of the pic? he`s not in the plane... he hit the eject button"

Ya, he also hit it about 200 feet above the ground. Assuming his plane was traveling between 150 - 200 mph, he`ll carry all that momentum to the ground with him. So ya, sucks he waited so long to eject. Might as well have died in the crash. Death over vegetable anyday.

Not shopped. This is from the Thursday before the airshow this weekend in Lethbridge, where I live. It`s a CF-18 Hornet. The stall out is tentatively being blamed on a bird being sucked into the intake.

bridog6996 don`t be stupid. The entire ejection system is designed to be zero-zero. YES you can use the ejection system sitting on the ground, and you will live. The seat pushes you far up enough for the parachute to open.

@projectwind and SunThunder

I clearly said the PARACHUTE, not the ejection seat. Two separate things. The ejection seat shoots you out of the airplane, the parachute is the thing that hopefully stops you from falling to your death. If you can make a parachute work with zero altitude and air speed, drop everything right now and go work for NASA.

This is not shopped, it happened in My hometown of Lethbridge Friday, the pilot was attempting a low lying slow pass in a CF-18 Hornet when it veered right on him (he was to preform it at the International Airshow this weekend). THE PILOT IS OK, he is still in hospital, but is already "joking around" about it. The Dept. of National Defence is here investigating the incident.

@SidOfOdin, that`s the ejection seat, silly.

Male 11
bridog6996 you are WRONG. Modern ejection seats are zero-zero. That means they work even with zero altitude and zero airspeed.

Male 571
That guy still probably got pretty effed up. Parachutes need a certain amount of falling time to fully open up in the air, and even then you need some more falling time for the air drag to slow you down a significant amount. He doesn`t have nearly enough. From the looks of the picture, it was probably equivalent to falling off a 4 or 5 story building. He`d be lucky to not die from that. So I guess you could say he got very lucky twice in a row, assuming he`s not dead.
