Doesn`t work....My bf and I just stayed on the 17th floor at the hilton....the evelator always took FOREVER and whenever I tried to use that trick, it NEVER worked :( we musta spent like an hour total waiting for elevators...you would think at a place like the hilton, they would be a little quicker.

Floors 4, 14, and 24 don`t exist because this is a Chinese lift.

The word for `4` sounds like `death`, and `14`, sounds like `tomb`. They`re massively superstitious about these things, more than we are about the number 13.

Nobody wants to live or put their business on, so they skip them entirely.

So there`s your fun lift fact for the day. Share and enjoy.

"It has a 13th floor??"
That is a Chinese or Japanese elevator.
There is a "13" but not a "4" which in Chinese sound like their word for death.

Anime trivia: Excel`s "Roponmatsu" = "614" = "Suffers before dieing"

I`ve tried this at a hotel when checking out once xD

Normally, the doors would open on nearly every floor, but I tried it, and I went straight up, and it didn`t stop once. I think it`s true

It`s probably not Japan. Any elevator built to suit numerical superstitions there would also be missing nine, one of the pronounciations of which sounds like the word for pain or suffering.
Not concidentally, both four and nine are unpopular numbers to use for floors at a hospital. :P

Not so sure about the Japs, but the chinese elevators are all like this, to maintain property value of the "death" floor. Usually they replace 4 with 3A and so on though

In japanese 4 is "shi" and that is the same word for death. Both Death and Four have alternate ways of being said but because they share that, it`s considered that 4 is very unlucky. Similiar to 13 to westerners like us.

Allenthing, I`m surprised it has a 13, to be honest. The number 4 in Cantonese is phonetically similar to "death". As such, it`s considered unlucky. There`s no 14 or 24 for that same reason.

It`s also why a lot of big city hotels, with lots of international visitors tend to skip 13 and any floor with a 4 in it.

8 is considered a lucky number, so those floors fill up fast in Vegas, hehe.

Our old building had 17 floors and this didn`t work. Instead, there was an "Emergency keyhole" in the lobby panel that switched it over, sort of like putting it on service.

All elevators have a maximum weight allowance tolerated for normal use. Most control boards these days won`t allow a car to respond to an activated hall call-button if they`re at or close to capacity. This is another possible explanation as to why this "trick" might work sometimes.

Like the FPE said further down, fire depts don`t run around with these fire service keys. They have 1 key that opens 1 box that contains all necessary keys for them to do their job in that building. Knox Box is a popular brand, though there are others.

Fire crews use elevators during a fire to move their teams and equipment quickly. They`re safe enough as long as the heat and smoke don`t affect the hoistway or elevator mechanical rooms.

Civilians aren`t supposed to use elevators in a fire (not that they can if it`s tied into a fire alarm system), because the FD needs it for logistics....and they have nifty scba gear in case poo goes wrong.

the 4 thing is true for some chinese native speakers, the only difference between the number 4 and the word for death is how the syllable is said,or the tone, so my chinese teacher paid the school extra money to have her ID number have no 4s in it. but i dont know if that has any correlation to this picture.

Iledesiel: Japanese, not Chinese, but yes that`s correct.

tiggerwitch1: There are no 4th, 14th, or 24th floors as Iledesiel stated. They simply rename the floors. It`s similar to why some buildings in the US don`t have a 13th floor.

This particular building elevator only stops on those floors. More than likely, there`s another elevator either next to this one or on the other side of the building that goes up to the "missing" floors.

phase II keyswitches are also enabled by the phase 1 keyswitch (where installed.) Down here, phase 1 keyswitches are required on all new elevator installations.

I have a feeling a few of the times this "express mode" has worked, it was coincidence.

I`d only support using this hack if the elevator is crammed. Otherwise it`s just plain inconsiderate.

I work as afire protection engineer and work with elevator co. First this does not work on every elevator or even most elevators. MAYBE a few,..different elevator companies use different equipment and different control programs. Nothing works on everything. Second, fire fighters or even cops do not have keys. Each building is required to have a lock box on site with the buildings keys in it. They do not carry aroung keys to every building in the city. And finally when the keys are used they only work if the elevators are acitvated by the fire alarm system. When that happens the elevators are recalled down to the first floor and stay there until operated with the keys. That is why you do not use elevators in a fire. The fire dpeartment has to use them.

Quik2TheStab, sometimes building skip floors in their numbering. A lot of buildings don`t have a 13th floor because its bad luck. In this case the 3rd and 4th floor might have been combined to raise the ceiling, but they kept the original number scheme.
0

Male 70
I`ve tried this many times on many different elevators, and it`s never worked.
0
Reply
Female 696
@Quick2TheStab I could just be a floor full of offices that only employees are allowed to enter, thus the number not being available on the elevator. I`m not 100% sure on this, but it`s at least a possibility.

Male 588
Some more info about numbers in Chinese culture.

I don`t think this trick will work with every elevator. But there is another method with hitting the "stop" button right before elevator opens to let someone in and then quickly hitting the floor you need to get to. You can get stuck with this method if you`re not careful or fast enough, so I wouldn`t recommend it.

quik2, its much like many buildings don`t have a 13th floor..why? superstition.

also, this technique doesn`t really work, I`ve tried it on multiple elevators. many people always have the "how to skip floor" tricks, but its NOT how cops do it, cops have the key same as firemen, they turn it to fire and it can go to their floors w/o stopping and nobody can use the elevator when in fire mode w/o the key.

New buildings in some parts of China omit the fourth, fourteenth, twenty-fourth, etc. floors, as the word "four" (Hanzi: 四) sounds like "death" (死 – pronounced "sì" and "sǐ", respectively) in Mandarin.

-Cut from wikipedia for people who can`t figure out google.

@Quick2TheStab - In some countries, most Asian I think... the number 4 is pronounced similarly to the word for death. So buildings such as hospital will skip the numbers 4, 14, 24 etc. :P

It`s probably a Chinese elevator, "4" have almost the same pronunciation as "death" or "die", so they try to avoid using it.
