    I`m more depressed that we`re no longer the target audience. Screw the little kids, it wouldn`t have taken off without us original readers, dammit!

    I was either at home or at school. Probably both.

    I`m not particularly depressed.

    I`m also not particularly old; I`m 19.

    Yea, they thought Americans would be too stupid to know what a philosophers stone is. Sad thing is, they`re f*cking right.

    @Fash: Philosopher`s stone IS what it`s suppose to be called, they "translated" it so Americans could understand, apparently you guys weren`t considered smart enough to know about the philosopher`s stone... Same reason "Led Zeppelin" spelt their name like that so you`d say lead as in plumbum and not lead as in guitar.

    Speaking of HP, I`ve decided to re-read them all in my free time (so, not obsessively). I know I read the first 3 a few times when I was young, but there`s so much I didn`t pick up on that I`m noticing now.

    I saw the same thing said about Pokemon once. Someone joked he`d been playing the games since a lot of the franchise`s current target audience were in diapers.

    @FashPuma: Yes, they changed the title for the American edition.

    I was 11. My mate read it, liked it, so then I read it and liked it to. He discouraged me from bringing it up in school because a book about wizards n shizzle was way too geeky, no matter good the story was.

    I tried reading it when I was younger, but Voldemort scared the poo out of me. xD I eventually went back to it and read up to the sixth one. I can`t remember a damn thing about them, though, other than Sirius Black was badass.

    Whenever something harmless is banned for no reason, religion is always a suspect.

    what has Harry Potter to do with religion- it is a childs book about wizard school- good over evil, no sex, bad language or poor role models. Unless you include Voldemort, who never seems terribly cool. I can see no reason any religious types could object- a good moral fable promoting sound values.

    @Madduck

    Based on what I remember from my Childrens Literature lectures, Harry Potter actually has quite a lot to do with religion, the main thing being that Harry can be seen as a representation of Jesus and Voldemort as Satan. The Christian subtext gets progressively more noticeable, culminating in Harry sacrificing himself to save others, only to visit `heaven` and rise from the `dead`. Rowling herself is a Christian, and I direct you to this: http : / / www . mtv . com/ news / articles / 1572107 /20071017 / story . jhtml It makes quite an interesting read :D Of course, it`s nothing new, kids writers have been dealing with religion since C.S.Lewis, but she does it a lot less directly than him, which leaves it completely up to personal choice of how to read it :)

    I don`t get it, socerors and philosophers are two very different occupations, one of them being fictional, and all.

    (and considering the idea of such a stone is taken from mythology/folktales/whatever, wasn`t it an alchemist`s stone originally?)
