The other question is, how depressed are you after knowing this?

Nah, I`m not really old, because I`m eighteen. I was eight when I first read Harry Potter. Therefore I am still youthful and have nothing to be depressed about. :)

I don`t get it, socerors and philosophers are two very different occupations, one of them being fictional, and all.

(and considering the idea of such a stone is taken from mythology/folktales/whatever, wasn`t it an alchemist`s stone originally?)

@Madduck

Based on what I remember from my Childrens Literature lectures, Harry Potter actually has quite a lot to do with religion, the main thing being that Harry can be seen as a representation of Jesus and Voldemort as Satan. The Christian subtext gets progressively more noticeable, culminating in Harry sacrificing himself to save others, only to visit `heaven` and rise from the `dead`. Rowling herself is a Christian, and I direct you to this: http : / / www . mtv . com/ news / articles / 1572107 /20071017 / story . jhtml It makes quite an interesting read :D Of course, it`s nothing new, kids writers have been dealing with religion since C.S.Lewis, but she does it a lot less directly than him, which leaves it completely up to personal choice of how to read it :)

what has Harry Potter to do with religion- it is a childs book about wizard school- good over evil, no sex, bad language or poor role models. Unless you include Voldemort, who never seems terribly cool. I can see no reason any religious types could object- a good moral fable promoting sound values.

All this before anybody had heard anything about it. Who knew?

@Fash: Philosopher`s stone IS what it`s suppose to be called, they "translated" it so Americans could understand, apparently you guys weren`t considered smart enough to know about the philosopher`s stone... Same reason "Led Zeppelin" spelt their name like that so you`d say lead as in plumbum and not lead as in guitar.
