Times are tough. This lady feeds her and 3 other families with "food" from Dumpsters.

I`m just glad that good food isn`t going to waste. In this kind of economy, I`m rather disgusted by stores throwing out good food.

If I was in a situation where I couldn`t afford food, I don`t see why not doing this. It`s not like she`s picking up food that is rotten.

The natural counter to overpopulation: perpetually finite resources. Killing and sterilizing people makes the problem worse, too, since all that violence makes people less productive on average.

I would be cool if they put it out for an hour or two and allowed people to grab what they wanted. But I`m sure eventually someone would get sick or something and sue the store. Then again, could there be a waiver involved? Meh, I`m sure no one cares.....

@Oscola
What a**holes
I say if they want to dumpster diving then let them, and if your worried about customers seeing hobos hanging around your shop then put the dumpster out of sight, which it already probably is

Kinda makes you reflect on the sort of jerk attitude it takes to make the world go round.

Sure, that stuff could feed someone hard on cash, could be recycled for compost, or sent to feed lots for pig food etc... but why give decent food away for free when you can just toss it out and keep selling the fresh stuff at full price?

I fail to see an issue. As long as she doesn`t complain if she becomes ill from eating out of a dumpster, I am completely fine with it.

In my country health regulations are strict and stores are not allowed to donate the food to the needy. They have to trash it.

Minimum of one day before expiration day the food has to be taken down from shelves.

There`s an organisation that distributes supermarket waste to poor people here in Australia. Granted, the supermarkets give it to them (no dumpster diving involved) but at least it helps reduce some of the waste going into landfill. A great idea, IMHO.

A lot of places are pouring dye all over their food before they put them it in the bins and then lock the bins so that people can`t get into them, all in the name of health and safety, ridiculous.

I think she`s pretty smart. Grocery stores have to throw out bread and stuff that`s left over at the end of each day, whereas we keep it in our cupboards for days. So it`s still pretty fresh. When I worked at a grocery store during uni I always thought it was such a waste to throw all that stuff away, even when there was a homeless shelter nearby. ><

lol thats why a lot of stores have compactors... you can`t dumpster dive in that

She`s a very smart woman. Every grocery store is like this. If you were to go look in their dumpsters early in the morning you would most likely find tons of bread and produce.
yes because my fridge is crawling with parasites, maggots, fungus, bacteria, e-coli, rats, homeless people......I`d rather dress up like a bum and go to the local food pantry....
Actually, yes. If you`re going at 6am to a dumpster behind a grocery store, that stuff`s only been out for an hour, max.

You`re only grabbing fruits and vegetables and grain out of there, and since it hasn`t been cut up or processed yet, all you have to do is go home and wash it.

Seriously, when you go to buy produce, how many other people do you think have picked up and touched the fruits and veggies you buy?

Not to mention that, yes, if you don`t clean the interior of your fridge regularly, and you do store meat and dairy in it, it has just as much of a chance of having e coli, fungus, and other nasties in there.

A lot of food gets wasted but the shops cant directly give it away. sometimes they can give it to a charity so they dont have liability. stupid laws

This makes me sad... Why the hell is it illegal? It`s food, and it should be rotten away rather than be put to good use?

:-(

my sister works at a starbucks, they have a policy that if food goes out of date, the have to throw it away. Once she had to throw away a whole cheesecake. but when her manager is in, people take it home/give it to homeless people.

That must be a great conversation:
"What are we doing for dinner tonight?"
"Dumpster diving."
"Ugh...again?"

I work in a restaurant and the amount of good food that we throw out, just from people who can`t finish their meals or for health code reasons makes me sad. I try to smuggle food out to the homeless after my shift. >.>

If you`re prepared to route through a dumster to find food then It`s not actually a bad idea.

The food will just be wasted otherwise so theres no reason to let eadable stuff rot away

Just goes to prove that you can eat better out of dumpsters in America then you can in the best markets of the third world.

That`s why you Americans need some "socialism" in your lives, this shouldn`t happen in a first world country.

We had a Food Lion, here in Georgia, that actually set the food up on the metal bread racks and put them out back for a few hours, for people to get what they wanted before tossing the rest (usually spoiled or rotten) got trashed. Some people even took the remaining to their farms for the animals. It was always twice a week at the same time of day.

I remember depending on that quite a few times as a kid. It`s not like people who can afford it will toss and choose amongst rotten/smelly food, so why can`t they all do that??

PS: My mom used to work at the Salvation Army. She went to the store manager and talked to him about the food that was being thrown out. He couldn`t give it to her or donate it, as the law wouldn`t allow it. But, he could put it in a cart next to the dumpster, instead of in the dumpster. My mom would pick it up. I wonder if this lady talked to the manager of the places she goes to if she could work out a similar deal.
