So much work put in to something that`s only supposed to deceive people. I don`t get it.

I love the pic of the kid "stalking" the pizza. That one needs to go up on billboards everywhere!

Food advertisers have a difficult job: convey taste and smell via sound and picture.

"MMmmh... the pizza looks delicious" - what a nonsense!

+1 for the marketers that came up with this "behind the scenes" idea because I really could go for a Domino`s pizza now.

JKolodne,

actually at the end of the video they did an about turn, and agreed with you. What matters is the pizza that comes out of the oven.

So they`re basically admitting - "there`s a reason the pizza never looks like that when you get it....`cuz what you see on t.v. is not realistic." Stupid.

Exactly what he said in the video. All of that stuff doesn`t make Dominoes taste any better.

Because you can polish a turd, but it`s still just a polished turd.

My gf mom was a food photographer at one time...sometimes they use mashed potatoes instead of ice cream so it can make the ice cream look more smooth and stuff..everything`s a lie

My friend`s mother was a food stylist, for print ads, back in the 70`s and 80`s. About half the (edible) stuff you see in an ad isn`t actually what you think it is.

Food styling is NOT stupid. Yes, they seem a little over the top in this commercial, but it`s a big budget production. Oh, and most people love food porn, which is heavily manipulated by food stylists.

And after all that, we realize that it was nothing more than a crummy Dominos commercial.

I must admit, the commercial was brilliant. Too bad their pizza sucks balls.

Food stylist. What a f**king stupid job. Some foodstylists probably take them selves really seriously too: "Oh ladida I shoot fancy commercials".

The baby on the apartment above me has cried for two weeks now. Is this normal? It rarely shuts up. Just asking..

wow the amount of money that`s tied up in one of these shoots is astounding!
going by what the key grip said, if they have twenty lights (each light including a softbox) and fifty c-stands at roughly $350 per head (plus softbox) and $250 per c-stand, that`s almost $20,000 in expenses already!!!
that doesn`t include the price of cameras, the cost of all the materials, paying everyone on the set, etc.
even if all the equipment is rented/already payed for that`s a large chunk of change for just one shot of a slice of pizza being pulled. 0.o

I saw something similar to this in high school, but it was about a cheeseburger commercial. They put toxic glaze and crap on the burger so it looks all shiny, and they pick perfect buns with the right amount of sesame seeds on it. But they only do the side that`s showing to the camera, so if you were to turn the burger around it would look like crap haha. It`s ridiculous.

Sadly, I already knew about all of that. xD Ive seen footage from the Chuck E Cheese commercials and food shoots. ^^ My dad makes the pizzas for em. The peppers are usually coated in lipstick to make them redder. Weird stuff like that. Now add difficulty, make a pizza a DOG can eat, while still keeping it looking like their pizza, but be able to make it look good with perfect cheese. xD That was an interesting story to hear.

And their "hand model" seemed reeeeeally bitchy :P

All that work for a Domino`s pizza that tastes like crap anyway. Who do they think they`re fooling?

@MonoBrow

We`re talking about a 15-30 continuous shot of the tabletop/cheese-pull. I`m fluent in photoshop, but I`m no pro; on the other hand, I animate on a daily basis. 24FPS for 30 seconds = manipulating 720 individual frames that have to be photo-realistic, and have perfect continuity. If photo-realism isn`t an issue that would take a few hours, if photo-realism IS a concern it would take me days.

Then, once they go through all that work shooting the video they don`t need someone to photoshop another version for print, they can simply touch-up a still.

The sad thing to me is that we as consumers actually care about this. Not that we`re interested in this "behind-the-scenes" look at how they make the shot but that they have to go through that much work to get a shot that satisfies us and glorifies the product.

Yeah, it was an advertisement, but it was posted because of how interesting the behind-the-scenes work is for such a seemingly simple thing.

band, you get a job as a professional cheese puller by having exceptionally beautiful hands, just like any other hand model.

Uhhhh, so IAB is advertising Pizza now or do you seriously think this was anything else but a massive viral advert? Good advert, but bad IAB for promoting it. On top of that, WTF with the talking adverts in the links you`ve added now? Just scared the poo out of me and I had to go through each tab pressing the mute button. Not impressed.

To support Crabcakes, food commercials/photographs must use real food. For years I thought McDonald`s use plastic food, but no .. it`s the REAL thing .. just incredibly stylized.

I`m studying commercial photography and I must say food photography is A PAIN IN THE ASS! Everything must be in place (including water drops on beverage bottles). It`s so incredibly time-consuming. Food styling is an art. Attention to detail and patience are essential to food photography. Oh goodness, I haven`t looked a food photo the same way since I started photography...

Producing "real" food in advert`s takes quite a lot of work. A friend of mine interned in an ad agency; one of his tasks was to prep beverage glasses before filming - by covering them with droplets of glycerine to simulate the water drops condensing on a cold glass... took almost half hour per glass to do it properly before filming close-up shots...

the whole time I was thinking exactly what the pizze chef said at the end. Companies should have enough confidence in their product to show it as it really is and we should have enough common sense to know that fast food and pizza and the like are not fine dining and except it the way it is.

@Johnsoir1:

Same rules apply for video. It has to be real food, even if it is overly produced and pedicured before the shoot. As far as outside the US, I have no idea, but my dad found this out when he opened a little pizzeria for something to do in his retirement.

Another odd rule pertains to alcohol advertisements. NO ONE in the commercial can be seen actually imbibing the product, the camera will always cut away just before glass/bottle meets lips, or the whole commercial will consist of people standing around holding the product.

There`s a lot more rules and regulations that go into producing food advertisements, some of them seemingly counterproductive.

When the hell has anyone EVER seen a Big Mac look like the picture on the board? It`s insane, really.

The foam used in most coffee advertisements is actually shaving cream because it stays in the same shape.
It`s such a shame advertising is mostly fake.

Male 26
zazuch thats not entirely true. In the US, certain foods, a lot of which fall in to fast food categories have to be real. wether or not you will ever see something like that actually being served is totally different. In Canada and most parts of the UK anything goes. Including plastic scoops of ice-cream.
This is from a photographic background in this. In the video world, I have no clue, what needs to be true and what can be fake.

Aha. This is a Dominoes pizza commercial. I was wondering why everything was so exaggerated.

Though I do know a lot of this to be true, this particular description was definitely done over-the-top. I`m sure their removing of cheese and fixing of pepperoni is only very slight, and the pulling off the pizza is not done by a pretentious hand model.
